This was one of the most important groups to come out of the 90's. They blended many entities perfectly. The group consisted of people of all ages. Their music was just that good, that they were able to socially educate their audiences without overwhelming them with rhetoric. Not too many artist can make you think and dance at the same time. Brilliantly done AD. Excellent choice of song!

Well said. This was definitely one of those songs that spanned difference races. Brought a lot of non rap fans to the genre, or at least helped make them pay attention. I was only in middle school and I was heavy into gangster rap, but back then being a white kid, it just wasn't something you'd share with your parents. This was one of the first songs that I really liked, and my mom liked too. And I'm not saying she or anyone else was racist or anything, it's just at age 12 I'm not gonna listen to The Chronic with my parents. This song I could listen with anyone. If you were around you know I guess

It's important to hear the song in context, too. This song came out in 1992, during the crushing crack epidemic, a period of heightened gang violence and inner city poverty, And the same year that the end of a trial in which members of the LAPD were acquitted triggered the Rodney King riots. It was George Floyd 1.0, as that had been the first time the country saw amateur footage of blue on black violence, followed by a total failure of accountability, which sparked an outraged response that consumed whole blocks, and some of the same neighborhoods and infrastructure that POC lived in and needed. Years of misunderstanding, fear, anger between Black and Korean Americans in SoCal also came to a head in all this. 1992 was Rodney King movingly asking, "can't we all just get along?" And whole sections of our society screaming back "no!" There was a lot of pain, suffering, fear, rage, a lot of chickens coming home to roost, but outside of the arts and entertainment, not very much hope for change or growth. Thank God for the arts. Sometimes, they carry us through when there is little human consolation to be found. In context, the lyrics of Tennessee are even more profound.

Fishing For Religion is my fave track,, and MrWendell got that funk to it. They spoke truth, and it was a different time then, but what they sing about was an even earlier time... Unfortunately, today people have elevated these thoughts, and weaponized them for a different agenda. I have family scattered throughout TN, NC, SC and, they all seem to coexist very well. It's not such an issue in rural life... The negativity seems to be spawned in metro areas. It is sad, that people cannot see the light, and love one another, for who they are, instead of the ideology that is perpetuated. ✌️ And, not sure, but this band only made 2 album releases,, not sure what happened to them in the later 90s and beyond ? 🤔

Rap of the 90’s had a message, it would tell a story about real life. The rap of today is all about getting rich and having sex with women. I am not black, but I went to a high school that was at least half black and I listened to all these songs during the 90’s with my black, hispanic, and white friends. We were more united back then, we didn’t stress about race, we joked with each other and were good friends. These songs were positive and educational. I remember even doing something reading about the deeper history of slavery after hearing this song.

FYI, this wasn't far "back in the day" as you guys are thinking. This wasn't the time of Jim Crow and lynchings when they made this song, but the song itself is referencing that though Jim Crow had long since passed, black people were still feeling the after effects of it. Jim Crow and the lynching era began about 1870, and lasted all the way up to the 1960s. This group, Arrested Development, and the song "Tennessee" came out in the early 1990s. Yet, even to this day (2020s), American society still is unequal in many respects, especially when in come to law and order, and the judicial system. So, don't let your guards down, Tim and Fred, thinking that things are so light and airy today, and that systemic racism no longer exists. Under the right set of circumstances, this society will remind you of just how black you are, and what that means in the face of white privilege.

Honestly, the time this song was out, I feel like things were better than today, by a lot. Back then, I still had the false idea that progress was linear. when that is definitely not the case. This song sparked an interest in me to really study the Reconstructio era. I have always viewed that era as a huge mistake, a wasted opportunity to set the stage to actually become the great country it claims to be, but is far from it. This country has never been great to me, and never will be until they atone for all the sins, and the torture they have heaped on God's chosen people. If only the USA had kept up in good faith, all of the changes that helped African Americans of the time, to make great strides in such a relatively short time., we would be so much closer to ideal of a great free nation. They didn't keep their word of course, and was frightened and jealous by how fast Black Americans were making a way for themselves. A people who are truly superior has no need or want to oppress others, and to stack the deck against others. So here we are in 2021 and experiencing and seeing the worst racism I have ever seen in my lifetime. I was born in the mid 70’s NYC. Our generation was of the first to benefit from the Civil Rights Movement. My Jamaican parents came here for education and opportunity. Every time I go to Jamaica I understand but then I don't understand why they left such a beautiful place. IfJamaica kept all their talented citizens, the country would be amazing. Some of the brightest and best Jamaicans are improving the nations they have migrated to for opportunities. My people doing great things all across the globe. By the time I was 10 they had become citizens, owned our home, my father one his second station. My sister and I were always at the top of our classes. I loved them for the great example they set for us, if they could do all that, in such a short time, then we could too. No they never re eived any handouts from the government like a lot of Americans like to say, to make excuses for limited progress after being in the USA several generations back. No disrespect to my Black American family, after living here long enough and researching the history. I know of all the program s your ancestors were denied, the redlining of neighborhoods, exclusion from GIbills, and racists attacks and theft of what is legally yours. Even after my husband and I finished our undergrad studies. An elder asked me what our career plans were. I wanted to t help abused children in a child protection and he wanted to become a detective to help clean up his neighbor. Srtptrangely she was appalled by my answer, saying you are such good people why on earth would you want to do those jobs? We were stumped, and trying to figure out how that was not a positive thing, lol. Well, now I understand where she was co ing from. But I still believe it is most important to infiltrate into every space that affts us. Change from the inside, was my you g naive thought. agencies like the police department, child protection, welfare, health are fingers on the same hand they use to try and slap us into submission. They all work together. Research when and why these agencies we're created and the reason I the older black woman was upset. We both come from immigrant families, we were not privy to all of this history and how it is used to opress and divide, while targeting the poor, black, and non white Americans.

Do you know it’s actually deep is that this song is just as relevant 30 years later, today, then when it was released. Arrested development was one of the few hip-hop concert I love because they were singing something. They’re based out of Atlanta Georgia-one of the first southern hip-hop groups of the early 90s. You need to check out their TV one unsung episode so you can really get where the heart was. The song is still painful to hear because nothing has changed much in 30 years. They had another song called I am every day people. The young lady singing, Dionne Faris, went on to become a solo artist. She did more like Afro punk rock but it was Really dope.

This song was the ish back in the day, the 90's. Their lyrics were thought provoking but the beat was bangin (turn it up loud in ur ride). They were unique. Speech the leader literally gave speeches through his music. This is when r&b artists merged w/rappers 2 create even more bangin hits. 💘 AR they were the ish. Check out "People Everyday and Mr. Wendall". Good 1 fellas.

Refreshing one thing about the 80’s and 90’s you had your pick of good music and all different kinds of hip hop…this was Hip Hop I can listen to with my parents, it had meaning it was creative, they showed respect…just all around good music!!! And this was Hip Hop back then it didn’t all sound the same yeah you had your raw explicit lyrics that came in the early to mid 90’s but you also had this as well so you had your pick. consciousness you had them, KRS One, XClan, Public Enemy, Most Def, Da Roots, Hardcore you had Eric B & Rakim, EPMD, Mc Lyte, Party/dance Jungle Brothers, Rob Bass, Kwame, we all know the Hippies of Hip Hop De La Soul, Story telling Slick Rick, Pharcyde, I can go on on on….the point is you can listen to the whole song with your children &. they can sing along and appreciate Hip Hop as well!

Indeed! Conscious lyrics & Roots music. When Hip Hop was a total field of creation: Graph, Dance, Scratch & Rap. And in those times, here in France, Hip Hop wasn't a Black thing: all shades of skin were in: NTM ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y4uOM7s38XA.html or IAM ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7ceNf9qJjgc.html

I was in my early 20s when this came out. It was so unique, even with all the great hip hop and R&B styles at the time. I went out and bought the CD right away. Their lyrics were so powerful, soulful, and spiritual. They mixed soul, hip hop, and gospel sensibilities and made it accessible for everyone. You seriously need to listen to the ENTIRE album from start to finish. You won’t be disappointed. I’m 49 now snd still listen to this album.
