I talked to Alan Gorri after their show in the 90's..he got emotional when I pulled out my 8trk tape..so did I..he kept me there for an hour..I have 5 more tapes of them.. that's my love for the music.. always

I'm going to be real: This whole "Black music" Thing is a relatively new phenomenon. I'm 56 and as a young man there was no "white" music, "Black" music designations. There was no need to gate-keep and punish a race for liking and performing a music style you enjoyed due to some perceived injustice. We had common sense back then, look at sport events, music venues, parks and recreation you saw blacks and whites enjoying life side by side, it's only due to social programing that we've fallen down this road of hate and division.

As a product of the seventies, I had lots of black friends. We were the generation that finally said. That's enough with the inequality and racism. We forced society to drop the old school trash behavior. We are all equal. That's the way it was back then.

The Soulful Bobby Caldwell sang "What You Won't Do For Love." The Average Band is originally from Scotland and their love was for Soul Music and their heroes were James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Motown, etc..

You are absolutely right,, Some groups just can't be put in a box..I am Native American (Navajo) & A perfect example of that is,, Redbone "Come And Get Your Love"..Most knew/know the song,, But those who saw them perform for the first time were shocked to see that they were an all Native American group,, Who's sound definitely couldn't be put in any box/genre of music..When seeing/listening for the first time,, I would STRONGLY SUGGEST reacting to,, Redbone "Come And Get Your Love" Live on the "Midnight Special"..TRUST ME on this one my music lovin' brother. 🔥

You gotta’ check out “Work to Do” An absolute classic. Saw them in Albuquerque in the late 70’s & then at the Hollywood Paladium in the 80’s as the head- liners. Pure Funk!

Grew up on AWB.. they were one of my favorite bands from the 70's. Gotta checkout their albums Soul Searching and their live album Person to Person. Bobby Caldwell is the name you're thinking of...and yes Soul Train was a vibe. Soul, R&B, and blues, has always been popular overseas particularly in Europe. Also gotta checkout Tower of Power and their many soul and R&B funk classics.

In the song replace the word cake with Coke. That's not how white bands sounded in the 70's. Hence the name "Average White Band". "Soul Train" was one of the best shows ever on television. I called it "Dance School".

AWB is terrific! Listen to "If I Ever Lose This Heaven. A masterpiece covered by Quincy Jones featuring Minnie Riperton. Hamish Stuart, one of the lead singers of AWB, has Stuart has written songs for and worked with Chaka Khan. Chaka Khan's longtime producer was Arif Mardin.
