No one came close simply, because they wrote all of their own songs and wrote and produced over 1000 songs for themselves and others. They wrote and produced songs for Dolley Parton, Celine Dion, Kenny Rodgers, Barbara Streisand, and many many others. They were very much underappreciated but I believe that they are greater known and appreciated now than they were then because of people like you and thousands of others who have discovered them. To answer one of your questions, back in the 70's everyone listened to the radio and bought albums. That's how groups were promoted. Although the Bee Gees were known for their disco hits for me, their greatest music was sung in the 60's, 80's '90s, and in 2003 For Whom the Bell Tolls, is unforgettable. You really must listen to Fanny Be Tender With My Heart, Jive Talking, and Tragedy just to name a few. Earth, Wind and Fire is my second favorite group after the Bee Gees.

I've had a wonderful life with my beautiful wife of 54 years and our two daughters and two sons and this takes me to the 1970's which were the best of times and the worst of times. I've been spoiled by my parents with access to their good music, my young aunts who gave me rock and roll in the 1950s, and the transistor radio in the 1960s blaring the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Motown!

In Europe and the world The Bee Gees were also very famous before the Fever or the so-called "disco" period. They just switched from their old sound to a new sound, with rich orchestrations and rhythms, and then US went crazy for them. We listened to them on the radio or saw them in concert on TV. At first they sang something like soft pop rock, then they went to R&B/Soul which is mistaken defined as "disco", then they wrote songs for other singers, and finally they came back again with their typical sound, which I think can only be defined as theirs name - Bee Gees style - Gentle smooth harmonies, perfectly balanced with interesting instrumental, melody and lyrics. Genius!

The Gibb brothers wrote over 1000 songs and they wrote hit songs for other artists. They actually wrote THREE #1 singles in ONE day (Too Much Heaven, Tragedy and Shadow Dancing which was a huge hit sung by baby brother Andy Gibb). They grew up and began singing as children in Australia, then moved to England. They've changed and restarted their careers a few times over 50 years. They had big hits back before disco hit big in the late 70s. In fact, they didn't intentionally write disco music. They had these songs they'd been working on for a still untitled new album in 1977 when movie producer Robert Stigwood called them up and said he wanted five songs for the new movie he was working on called Saturday Night Fever starring a kid named John Travolta. They knocked out the songs in one long weekend (including Saturday Night Fever, Staying' Alive, How Deep is Your Love and More Than A Woman). The movie became a cultural phenomenon, and though they already had hits back in the 60s the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack shot them into super stardom.

I'm mid-Gen X and when the Bee-Gee's released this, I was not even kindergarten-aged. This was definitely my parent's (Boomers) music, and my taste in music didn't start really developing until somewhere around the mid to late 80s. Although, as an adult I do admit to the Bee Gees growing on me over the years. Back in the 70s, cable TV was really not a thing in most homes. In the majority of home, there were like 3-5 network TV channels, and we had the radio. Beside reading, this was mainly our entertainment. MTV didn't even become a thing until 1981. Instead, they had shows like American Bandstand, Midnight Special, Soul Train, and other musical shows on these network channels here in the US (Britain had their own like Top of the Pops). And the radio would feature a weekly series like the American Top 40, which would introduce new songs that eventually became popular.

He was honored at The Kennedy Center Awards in December. Sir Paul Mccartney still writes and tours, as does Sir Ringo Starr. The Beatles, with all four members, dropped a new song, their last, which was #1 on the charts in 2023. Sir Paul followed with another #1 not long after a a songwriter. It was much harder to make it as a famous musician back then. You'd have to get recognized by an A&R rep and get signed to a record label. Record labels had the money and influence to get your songs played on the radio. People would hear songs on the radio and if they liked them they would go buy their records, 8tracks or cassette tapes. It wasn't easy to even get an A&R rep to even listen to a demo. One thing that was cool about it was in the 70's and stuff, we often didn't really even know what the musicians looked like unless their picture was on their record or they had a guest appearance on a tv show. Of course some people were known for their looks, but there was more focus on the quality of the music than what the people looked like than there is now.

I think your generation needs to bring back love music - in your own way of course but leave all the anger and hate music behind and bring back love. Your generation needs it. I pray gen z finds love again.

When the BeeGee's were popular, I was driving a used '73 Mercury Comet with a V-8. Heading to the County Fair. I was born in 1964 and it currently seems that I am a Boomer. The BeeGee's transcend genres. Their voices blended beautifully and they made beautiful music. No one blends better than family members.

The Bee Gees never classified themselves as disco. That was the publicity that came out of the blockbuster movie, Saturday Night Fever. In fact it really is a small part of their incredible career spanning decades. Pop and R&B music. Their catalog is no joke as is their harmonies and vocal talents. Everyone found out about them through their hard work and tenacity. These guys are no joke. Thank you for your reaction.

Boomers (46-64) AND Gen X (65-84) Both generations enjoyed their music. Also, anyone after who has an appreciation for their music. How Deep Is Your Love was released in September 1977 (the oldest Xers would have been 12 YO & Boomers range 12-31) and is considered a 'pop ballad'. I'm Gen X and I grew up on this stuff!❤ Pop/rock, soft rock, disco (soft disco)

The Bee Gees had hits in the 60’s 70’s 80’s 90’s and 2000’s and not only for themselves. They wrote songs for most of the top artists such as Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, Elvis, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, Olivia Newton-John, Yvonne Elliman, Tavares, Frankie Valli, Jimmy Ruffin and Dionne Warwick to name but a few. They wrote over 1,000 songs are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Disco is only a very small part of The Bee Gees. They were around long before then. Mind you, Staying Alive(disco) was a huge hit for them. Many Gen X were raised on this music. At least my kids were. Also, artists like Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Queen, Pink Floyd, Mamas and the Papas, Jefferson Airship, and Chris DeBurgh, who I've never heard anyone react to, yet his storytelling music is amazing! Check out The Painter, The Crusader, or Spanish Trains. The list goes on and on. I believe we boomers had some of the best music ever recorded and it warms my heart to see other generations discovering it.

The Bee Gees were unlike anyone else. They just did what they did, make beautiful music. I don’t think there is anyone who is comparable to them. There were some beautiful harmonizing groups. My favorite harmonizing group was Crosby, Stills, Nash and sometimes Young, the song Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Or Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), but they have a totally different sound, good harmony though. They were a cross of a couple different types of music, R&B, Pop and Disco. They blended those types beautifully. I was born in ‘73 (Gen X) and I remember the music when I was a little girl. I’d say it was late Boomer music/early Gen X, mostly Boomer. We had the radio, boom boxes, movies and Walkman’s.

You’d find out about groups and singers from the radio mostly. Sometimes you’d see them on TV specials or late night shows. Soul Train, American Bandstand, Solid Gold and Midnight Special were weekly shows that had singers on it. There were other shows too. Then in 1981 we got MTV (later VH-1 , CMT and BET) and more exposure came to more groups and singers. MTV used to only have music videos on it, now there isn’t much music at all on it.

The Gibb brothers started singing together when they were very young! In the sixties they started rolling out the hits. Barry Gibb is the only brother still alive. Maurice and Robin are twins and passed away a number of years rid years ago. They have a ridiculous number of hits. They’re prob in the top 5 or ten of most albums sold! Their dad was a musician i believe. They started singing anywhere- back then they might perform in a movie theater before the movie starts. They were able to create a demo record and I think they probably either mailed it to some labels or drove around and dropped it off! I’m sure when they were signed, the way to get big was probably radio play. They clearly figured it out! And well before autotune was created.

They got their start in the 1950's in England and Australia where they grew up. I'm on the cusp of boomer and gen x and grew up listening to them (still do). The 4th brother (Andy) was just as talented. Unfortunately, 3 of the 4 have passed on. If you want to hear their true talent, check out them performing Blowing in the Wind live on a show in about 1963. It's incredible.

These were on the "solid gold oldies" radio station when I was growing up. It was old people music when I was growing up, but now I appreciate it so much more, the older you get the more nostalgic you get for thing to be the way they were when you were younger. As for how you became popular back then, it just took a lot longer and involved a lot more leg work. You would have to become popular locally (the larger town/city that you started in the quicker you would often grow) by word of mouth, playing small local gigs, or pay to rent some time at a studio to record and beg a DJ to play it on the radio. You'd have to hope to get recognized by someone from a record label would happen to hear about you and discover you. Once a label picked you up their event coordination and connections would help you move quickly into popularity. They'd do their work to saturate progressively bigger markets with your music. As the artist(s) you would be traveling all over performing and doing interviews to get played on the radio. Imagine trying to get the reach of social media, but essentially one radio tower at a time. The goal was to break into the large city markets. Eventually you'd be big enough to start hitting national charts which would facilitate in international recognition. Often times the most popular artists were ones that were able to break into more than one genre so they'd appear on multiple charts.

The Bee gees were a Unique group, and no one was really close to them. The Bee Gees stood for Brother's Gibb. They had a younger brother Andy Gibb who had a Solo career, The Bee Gees wrote his songs, and he performed part time with the Bee Gees, He was announced as joining the Bee Gees full Time but passed away before that could happen. Please react to the Bee Gees Song You Should Be Dancing. One of the Live performances shows Andy Gibb singing with the Bee Gees, it was amazing when all Four sang together, I am 59 Years old, and the Bee Gees are my Favorite Group and Elvis my favorite Singer. it was the Boomers music. I was born in 1964 and that is considered the last year of the Baby Boomers. Baby Boomers was for those born between 1946 to 1964. Generation X was from those born in 1965 to 1980.

Back in the day, artist depended on RADIO to play their records so the songs were geared for radio. Thats why it was so sad when they started that “disco sucks” time because radio stopped playing anything by The Bee Gees. So…they started writing for other artist and radio played those songs, which many got to #1! You can’t stop greatness!!!! I never considered The Bee Gees as a disco band. They were an R&B Band to me if anything!

There was no one better than they were. No one could match the harmonies these three. They were into R&B. A lot of their music was R&B based. As far as where they fit, they came came out in 1958. Their first #1 hit was Massachusetts in 1967. They were never a disco band. The songs they wrote for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack were written before the movie was even written. They continued to record music through 2001. In the early 80s they wrote for other artists. Including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Etc.

FYI - In '58, Barry was 11/12 & twins Robin & Maurice (pronounced Morris) were 10 years old. They could sing in perfect harmony since they were young children. A few years later, they were the sole support of their family of seven by performing.

Their dad was a drummer and they lived in Manchester 🇬🇧 they used to practice over and over as boys. They moved to Australia and had some success there as very young kids. They moved back to England and had some success. Robert Stigwood (record producer) recommended them for doing the sound track to Saturday night Fever . This shot them to stardom in America. Ps. I love them and proud to appreciate their music 🎶

The radio play of their songs is what made them known in other countries. Barry’s soaring vocals of just “Ahhhhh” I think was just him feeling the music and filling the background with beautiful tones that emphasized their incredible harmonies.

To answer a few of your questions, this was baby boomers and the generation that followed, which I was blessed to be born in. They called us the baby bust since there were fewer of us than in the previous generation. Music was amazing as more television programs were focusing on music only. We had Soul Train, Solid Gold, Dance Fever, the Midnight Special, etc. Disco was big. MTV had not peaked quite yet but was making its start. Most music was made popular in movies and by radio play. However, this was the era where you would go to the record store and listen to a record before purchasing it, with the big headphones. The 70s and 80s were special. There are way too many amazing groups and singers to mention, but I will name a few. You must check out Earth Wind and Fire, The Isley Brothers, Spandau Ballet, Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass, The Doobie Brothers, The Commodores, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, The Whispers, the Carpenters, and so many more. Lastly, don't forget about Andy Gibb. He was really talented too. He was much younger so he wasn't a Bee Gee, but he was not to be discounted.

I was 16 in 1977 when the movie Saturday Night Fever came out. The Bee Gees are prominent on the soundtrack. I also love Yvonne Elleman who is on the soundtrack as well. Donna Summer was popular during this period also. What fun it was to go to the underage dance club to go disco dancing! The dresses were great and the line dancing was awesome!
