This song is about a job he did when he was hiding from his producer for 6 months, so this song is about his real life.

Billy played a few parties for Birthdays, Bat/Bar Mitzvah, but mostly played Bars/Lounges before the first Album had 😳 the Piano player from the Island on SNL singing 'She's Always a Woman to Me'! Same with Bruce Springsteen who was a regular at the Stone Pony. A few players had houses on the Jersey Shore! 😂 The real one, not the fake Jersey on MTV! 😂🤣😂🤣😁🐰

Released in 1973. Billy writes all his music and lyrics himself. He’s an all around musician, great playing, singing, music and lyrics. The man can do it all. His catalog is a very deep rabbit hole, but well worth diving in. He is very eclectic in his writing so no one particular style. He still gives a great concert at 74.

Ok son, you hooked me. I say son only because judging by your face you could be one of my grandsons. It wasn't the song that hooked me it was your fair acknowledgement that you do like older songs. Most young people absolutely refuse to listen to older music just because of arrogance, but you're refreshingly different. Your parents should be proud, they did a good job. Personally, I have a whole lineup of songs I'd like to get your reactions to and they've made reactors' legends by pulling in the largest subscribers and unique viewers. Trust me. The first one I'd wish for is by a giant singer, song writer and actor. He's won multiple awards from different genres and Hollywood acclaim. Sadly, being also a pilot he crashed his experimental aircraft in the ocean and died. His name if you haven't already guessed is John Denver and most reactors start with Rocky Mountain High, but if you research John Denver titles you can close your eyes and pick with a dart and be sure to strike gold. Anyway I'm all subscribed and buckled in. Take me home.😊 PS. Love the MLB hat.

Try some of these: Innocent Man, A Room Of Our Own, Pressure, Tell Her About It, Goodnight Saigon, We Didn't Start The Fire, River of Dreams; You May Be Right, Matter of Trust (really fun video) and New York State of Mind (Old Grey Whistle performance). If you're into mad piano, also from Old Grey Whistle Test, check out Root Beer Rag. Glad you loved this. So, let's talk about those lyrics a bit. We start out with the old man who can't remember the song, but he knows that it made him feel good when he was younger. And he's still there. And then we're introduced to a series of regulars whose lives are going nowhere they really want to be going. They'll probably still be there thirty or forty years from now when they're the old man's age. And even our piano man is frustrated by his situation and cynical about the praise he's receiving. It's a sad song, but it was insanely popular when it came out, partly because the lyrics are so moving, partly because each character is made recognizable and sympathetic in just a few lines, and partly because the chorus is so rousing that you could "forget about life for a while."

Billy wrote this song himself, and it was release in 1973. Billy Joel had a contract dispute and took some time off from touring, but he loved playing and performing so he played in a piano bar under a fake name. This experience inspired him to write this song and it was a massive hit on his next album after his contract dispute was resolved. Note especially the lyric, "Man -- What are you doing here?" Some of his fans ran into him while he was doing the piano bar work and were shocked to see such a big star play in such a tiny bar.
@seanscanlon9067
@seanscanlon9067 3 месяца назад
Sorry, not trying to be a dick here as you have most of the details right but the "man what are you doing here" line was more about customers recognising that Billy had too much talent to just be playing piano in a bar rather than they were fans recognising him, which he had to do to make ends meet and his wife at the time was waitressing there too......"And the waitress is practising politics". He only did the job for six months after his debut album flopped due to the master tapes being recorded at the wrong speed and so it made his voice sound too high-pitched. The album did not sell well and he was not really famous at the time of playing piano in the bar, in order for anyone to recognise him.

I was 14 when this was released. The music is so layered it took me years to sort out all the instruments he's playing. Aside from the piano and harmonica, you can hear a concertina, a hand held squeeze box, similar in sound but softer than the harmonica. And a zither, a very high pitched stringed instrument. Those two are so seamlessly blended in it takes multiple listens to catch them as individual sounds. I'm still probably missing other subtitles.🧓😎💖
@seanscanlon9067
@seanscanlon9067 3 месяца назад
Sorry not trying to nitpick here but it is an accordion rather than a concertina, but I appreciate they do sound very much alike when you can only hear them rather than see someone playing them.
@dionysiacosmos
@dionysiacosmos 3 месяца назад
@@seanscanlon9067 I don't consider it a nitpick, but I've never heard an accordion played so piano. It's not something associated much with the South, so I've only heard it played forte on TV and in movies. And yes, I was listening to the Dr Demento Show when Weird Al introduced Another One Rides the Bus. But a piano forte accordion in the background of Piano Man is delicious. I'm just guessing about the zither, too. It's just too hard and crisp for the mandolin. The only zither music I really know well is from the theme song and score from The Third Man, a film by Orsen Wells and Joseph Cotton. I grew up on country music so I'm better suited to talk about something like a dobro and it's electric love child the steel guitar.
@seanscanlon9067
@seanscanlon9067 3 месяца назад
@@dionysiacosmos Piano Man could be considered Billy's country album, even if not by the title track. The personnel on the album lists Michael Omartian on accordion and he has also been the producer on albums by Clint Black, Debby Boone, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, and Trisha Yearwood. Eric Weissberg plays banjo, pedal steel guitar and he released the single Dueling Banjos and has worked with Doc Watson, Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, and John Denver, although they might be considered more folk than country. One of the tracks on the Piano Man album has a bluegrass sound to it and was covered by Dolly Parton and is called Travelin' Prayer. Another song on the album is called You're My Home and sounds like something John Denver might have recorded, with a country folk sound and there's another song on there called Stop in Nevada that John Anderson covered and another song called The Ballad of Billy the Kid that sounds like a western movie soundtrack. I am actually from London, England myself and so not exactly a hotbed of country music but I have always just liked the genre anyway.

#TrueStory 🤣 I was at 1 of those Bat Mitzvah he talks about in 'Only The Good Die Young'! 😏 He's right "those Catholic Girls start 😉 much too late. 🤷🏿‍♀️ But sooner or later, 🤔 it comes down to fate. 🤗 I might as well be the one!" 🤭 Dang this brings back memories, yo....! 😄🥰🐰 6:01

I need to check if you’ve reacted to Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start the Fire. If you haven’t, please do ❤

Stardom! No Metal release today, not a problem. Perfect opportunity to dig into the archives. I wish the classic rock reactions had better views for you Molly. Would love to see you checkout Rush, UFO, Supertramp, Budgie, Cream and a handful of others. IMO they are worth listening to even if you can’t make a reaction video for them. Keep up the nice work Molly, it’s paying off🤘

7th best selling artist all time in the US via album sells, 3M units behind Michael Jackson and 7M ahead of Elton John. 4th best selling solo artist if that matters. Amazing song writer. Less popular outside of the US. Sold over $1B worth of tickets in his career.

When I say “I like old music” I’m talking about Big Band Music,,, this is from my era so it’s hard to think of it as old.
