Interesting side note. The Animals’ bass player, Chas Chandler, pretty much discovered Jimi Hendrix. After seeing him in the US when he wasn’t well known and wasn’t even performing under his own name, he brought him to the UK, recruited a drummer and bass player, created the Jimi Hendrix experience and produced Jimi’s first few albums.

So the song here is a cover. It's a Very old American folk song (circa 1870), first recorded in 1925 by Robert Winslow Gordon, though he learned it from his Grandfather.... Later popularized by the Animals in the 1960s. The Animals are a British band, singing an American song, the melody of which was based on an English pub song (Entitled "Matty Groves"), so it went full circle, lol. They did change the lyrics. Originally, the song was about a prostitute, they changed it to "Gambler" to make it safe for radio play. The original lyric was set in England, NOT New Orleans. Here's a line from the original: "If you go to Lowestoft, and ask for The Rising Sun, There you'll find two old whores and my old woman is one" Edited: The instrument you're hearing is not Keyboard. I originally mistook it for a Mellotron, but one of the commentors below pointed out it is a Vox Continental, and they were correct. The Vox can emulate Mellotron sounds, but the bright orange color should have tipped me off. Good catch, dude. I stand corrected. Both the Vox and the Mellotron were analogue synth keyboards, with the vox being a transistor-based tone generator, while the mellotron used recorded micro-loops for each tone. Modern keyboards today are like a combination of the features of both. Both could reproduce the sounds in this song, but it is a Vox being used here.

This is a pinnacle point in the career of The Animals. They were a transitional R&B/Mod group formed in 1963 and shaped the future into the '70s. It is a worldwide anthem and has cemented the group as an absolute legend.

Try Procul Harum a Brit band singing 'A whiter shade of Pale' as I think you might like it. Listen to the version with the Danish National Concert Orchestra. You will be in for a treat.

I love the organ player in this video. All are great, but he's just wailing on those keys in his own world, and loving every second.

Eric Burden was 23 when this was recorded (1964) and it was done in a single take.

Eric Burden - the vocalist - was the bloke who brought Jimi Hendrix over to Britain and managed him and the Experience.

Was Chaz Chandler the bass player who "discovered" Jimi and ultimately became his manager along with managing SLADE... . The guys were from districts of Newcastle in the North East.... Absolutely fantastic band who have many many classics... Check out "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" An GI anthem in Vietnam........

It was the bass player Chas Chandler who became Jimi Hendrix first manager and brought him to England.

No auto tune here…this was pure talent. Not piano ..it’s a called an organ. Listen to the story he’s singing about. I grew up with this great music. Thank you for really appreciating the music of yester years gone by.

The Animals are a true classic British rock group of the 60s and the individual members have been very successful as well. The singer, Eric Burden has had success with various incarnations of the Animals, and as far as I know is still performing with their latest lineup. Also with the group "War" and as a solo artist in addition to acting in a few films. The keyboard player Alan Price also had a successful solo career and as a duo with Georgie Fame. For a period in the 1970s Price as a solo artist was arguably a bigger deal than the Animals, with regular TV appearances on shows such as Top of the Pops. Bass player Chas Chandler was actually one of the most important talent scouts, artist managers and record producers of the late 1960s and 70s. He was the man largely responsible for bringing the talents of, then unknown, Jimi Hendrix into the public eye, when he convinced Hendrix to accompany him to Britain and rename his band "The Jimi Hendrix Experience". He had a big hand in producing Hendrix's first 2 albums. Chandler later was manager and record producer for Slade for 12 years, during the time they were at their most successful.

👋 The Animals are from Newcastle. Love to watch your reactions- I was born around this time & my older brother has played guitar in bands my whole life… this is the kind of music he played. So I love watching reactions of younger ppl to this era - 50’s - early 90’s , the best era in my humble opinion 😎 I was worried that this type of music & the variety from this time would fade. To me the music of today is great, bcs I love all kinds of music & the talent involved, but it all sounds so similar today- there was a wide variety & sound back then… anyway I digress 🤣. I would like to request that you listen to a band that I haven’t seen any reactions to, but it is another great band from the 70’s - Mother’s Finest & the song is Baby Love- and another one is Piece of the Rock… I promise you & all us viewers will enjoy it..

They are very British, part of the British Invasion. But, this is a cover of an American song. They were opening for Chuck Berry and realized that you don't out-rock Chuck Berry. So, they went for atmosphere. I recommend another British band, Mott the Hoople. Death May Be Your Santa Claus or anything else off of Brain Capers would be a good place to start. Righteous Brothers (American duet) doing a live version of You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', would be another good touch. Another recommendation would be Ray Charles. Probably start with What'd I Say and end with Georgia, which is my favorite song in the world.

What I love about watching reactions to this is the look on people's faces when his vocals kick in. No one expects this voice out of that dude.
