Written during the height of the Vietnam War, this song could be about any war, and that makes it timeless and still relevant today, and into the future. Also, the boys in Sabbath were born post WW2 in Birmingham, which was in bad shape after the German bombings. They were born to parents who had survived that terrible war, so the pain and fear that haunted their parents was very real and left an impression I’m sure.

Black Sabbath’s first album was my very first album in 1970, given to me by my older sister. Unbelievable how good this music is even half a century later. Clearly the evolution of music was moving very rapidly at that point in the late sixties and early seventies. Imagine music like Black Sabbath’s coming out ten years earlier. It probably would have caused a riot in the U.S. What’s incredible is that the band decided to make their niche in the exploding rock field by transforming horror movie themes into rock, and heavy metal was born. “Reflecting on the strange fact that people would pay good money to be scared by a movie like Black Sabbath [which was playing in a theater across the street from the band’s rehearsal space], the band decided to make music that would scare people.” Which no other rock band had ever focused on as the theme of their music. Ironically their lyrics are often very spiritual. And the music itself is a strange kind of genius.

To give this context, this came out in the early 1970’s and just utterly stunned everyone. There was no sound like this at the time. It blew people mind and even scared the shit out of people enough to label devil worshiping music. This is the biggest peace protest song ever!

I was chuckling to myself during the song about the musically savage way these guys attack things. The music is as violent as the subject matter but way easier on the ears somehow. It's magical. Bit of trivia about this song. The "establishment" went after this song when it came out, claiming it was Satanic because it mentions "Witches in black masses," and Satan. Now, after reading the lyrics along with the song, what do you think? Think they were really upset about the word Satan, or maybe they were actually upset because they wrote one of the greatest anti-war songs of all time and basically called out that same establishment as being "war pigs," who will be crawling on their knees come judgement day. hmmm I wonder.

This song depicts the war like attitude from government and the emotional havoc it creates for society, individuals, families, love ones who leave for war and loves ones who wait for their soldiers return or not.. WW2 was form 1939 to 1945 Members of Black Sabbath( born 1948-49) are from Birmingham England a city known for its blue collar workers smoke stack industrial steel and manufacturing.. The parents/family of the members witnessed WW2 and the destruction it imposed on England(possibly family members were killed in WW2) .. This message of war was most likely echoed to them as children on what the horrors of war are like that just occurred few years before they were born.. That siren you hear in the beginning of the song( is a real siren sound) was used to sound off to warn the local town/villagers that war attack was emanant, a scary sound to hear during that time with most wondering where to go and hide... A very pivotal song

No, although there was clearly some solidarity from UK students, the Vietnam War wasn't as big an issue to us in the UK. The band were from Birmingham, an industrial city in the heart of the UK which was heavily bombed by the Nazis in WW2, their parents lived through that time, and most of the major UK cites had areas that had been flattened by bombing, these sites often becoming 'playgrounds' of rubble for post war kids. Bill and the band were also worried about being called up to do National Service, this peace time Conscription required all healthy males aged 17 to 21 to do 18 months military training as a post war duty, and be part of a reserve army should it be needed again.

Tommy Iommi is the star at the end of the day but the bass and drums on this song are both keeping things together and ALL over the place. And that doesn’t even get into Ozzy’s powerful but clarion vocals. Rarely does a song capture a mood that matches the subject, so well. Rock masterpiece.

My favorite Black Sabbath song to play with my band. Bass, guitar and drums are phenomenal, plus -- it was recorded more than 50 years ago. A testament to the staying power of Rock & Roll! Rock on!!!!!

Another Note: The name of the album was supposed to be War Pigs. The record company said no, pick another name. Someone suggested Paranoid, so they wrote another classic song called Paranoid on the spot.

Tony Iommi would often Double track his electric guitar whenever he did a guitar solo to give it a more fuller and thicker sound he was so innovative in the recording studio such a legend

When we hear music like this we are forced to remember all of our young friends, neighbors, and brothers who lost their lives before they had even begun to live. It was a war we should never have entered and too many gave all because of politicians. We remember you all.

Okay. when this came out. You dropped the needle in the groove and stood back. This is one of those albums where you dare not pick up that needle

I recommend Hand of Doom, from same album. It is about Heroine use, actually the whole album is recommended. The Paranoid album is considered one of the best Metal albums ever released.

Couldn't click fast enough - I knew you both would appreciate this, but I knew BJ was really gonna trip on those lyrics. And yeah, some of the heaviest drums around from Bill Ward. Great reaction as always guys- peace and love from Canada!

love this song... and kind of a silly story about my earliest experience hearing this. I was 8 when this came out. I now know that the lyrics he sings are " oh lord yeah ",...but my goofy 8 year old ears heard " Oh lawn chair " ...... lol. . . I was relieved to realize the correct lyrics many many years later, and I was also relieved to know that I didn't have to silently live in fear and worry about some secret sinister dark side of patio furniture 😋

Great musicianship in this tune, especially the drumming. Some things have changed since Vietnam and some haven't. War sucks, but sometimes there is no choice.

Sabbath had one of the best Rhythm Sections in rock history, this song is the proof of that, the drumming was tight as all kind and the bass kept up with it.

Tony Iommi’s riffs would not have their same impact if Geezer Butler wasn’t absolutely killing it on bass and Bill Ward crushing it on the drums!

You're the best reactors, you really sincerely feel it, seems like. Sabbath was a perfect complementary band, everyone contributed in unique ways. Bill was a monster on drums, Geezer & Bill were great rhythm section, Geezer was an amazing lyricist, Tony was THE all time guitar riff master and main musical writer and arranger, and Ozzy had a unique voice and gift for creating melodies. Magic. Many great Sabbath songs go through these changes in sections, like War Pigs. Some other great songs are Into the Void, Hand of Doom, Megalomania, Don't Start-Symptom of the Universe, Supernaut, Killing Yourself to Live, ... long list. Spiral Architect is unusual one for them, and personal favorite. Be well.

Please do not overlook Mr. Bill Ward's absolute destruction of that drum kit. If you watch this song live, all you see is a mass of hair and two arms with drum sticks beating the hell out of those drums
