I told my friends/co-workers that "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" by Panic At the Disco is one of the best white boy songs I've ever heard. Now they're sending me song suggestions and I'm doing live reactions here.
The "Everybody's been here" line refers to just how ever-present Hollywood is in everyone's life even if you're not from Cali. If you've turned on a TV, a radio, a computer, whatever. You've been blasted with Hollywood.
I don't really watch the music videos with these! I just add that there to give you guys something to look at. I like experiencing music for the first time with no visuals so that I'm not swayed. Also, the RU-vid audio quality of music videos be trash on these old songs lol. Thanks for all the suggestion ya'll been giving!
I'd keep to this strategy as a lot of music videos will get copyright hits. That said, for bands like Linkin Park, System of a Down, Disturbed, and Rage Against the Machine, go watch the music video after reacting if you don't already. Some songs, like Flobots "Handlebars" (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HLUX0y4EptA.html) and anything by Sabaton, where the music video enhances the experience two, three, or even five times.
The full line is "Born and raised by those who praise control of population - Well, everybody's been there and I don't mean on vacation." Basically means we can all relate to our previous generation holding some fucked up views, and us trying to grow beyond that and live better lives than them.
Which is is what 'CRT' is really about, but some people just want to put their heads in the sand and pretend the past didn't exist, or if it did it wasn't that bad, and if it was that bad "they" deserved it... sound familiar?
RHCP have a ton of great songs. "Give it Away", "Suck My Kiss", "Snow (Hey Oh)", "Under the Bridge", "Dani California", "Zephyr Song", "Areoplane", "Other Side", "Scar Tissue", "By the Way", "Can't Stop", "Soul to Squeeze", "Around the World", "Tell Me Baby", "Breaking the Girl"
The writers of the show Californication, as well as its central characters *love* rock music, so the name for the show 100% comes from this song, and is also incredibly appropriate for its premise.
Absolutely love this series! If you haven't heard The Pretender by the Foo Fighters, I would definitely check that out. Can't wait for the Chop Suey reaction you were talking about in the last video.
this song got a special place in my heart cuz when i was 14 that guitar solo made me go "fuck it, how difficult can that be?" and learn guitar lol. 10 years later im still playing constantly and creating music 🥰
@@mr.hanger hell yeah, we all learned smells like teen spirit when starting off lol. shoutout marty schwartz. and i still got a squier that i love to use. started off with an epiphone les paul though, they are awesome guitars.
"everybody's been there and I don't mean on vacation", compare to "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" from the Eagles' 'Hotel California' - this state really is another dimension man, I moved out here from Indiana and I'm still tripping on how different things are. The lyric about the sun having its final resting place here also alludes to the mystery of it - come up here to the Emerald Triangle and smoke enough Humboldt weed and it'll all click into place 😂
That's what I always thought this line meant, although not so much California as the idea of it that Hollywood sells, i.e. "Cali-fornication". In Hotel California, even tho they never really answered it, it felt more like a metaphor for addiction. "You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave" feels like "once an addict, always an addict".
Another avenue that will surprise you lyrically is Black Sabbath War Pigs and Ozzy Osbourne Crazy Train. Deep lyrics that you wouldn't expect from a headbanger.
The guitarist is John Frusciante. He’s arguably one of the best guitarists of our time. He got crazy inspiration from Jimi Hendrix and is probably the closest guitarist to him in our era as far as style goes. He has a phenomenal solo in the song “Strip My Mind”
Loving how hard you're vibing with these songs and loving the raw takes. If you're accepting suggestions, a white people staple is Hotel California by The Eagles. Keep em coming, this kind of content goes hard.
OOO, great choice! A nice classic parallel to kind of go with the theme of this song...where do you go to engage in Californication?...The Hotel California...
Got to be careful with eagles stuff. Couple of RU-vid reactors have been battling getting shut down. I don’t know how all that works, but apparently one member of the band is pressing hard on copyright and fair usage.
The Chili Peppers got down with George Clinton and the Parliament/Funkadelic crew early on in their careers. These cats are legends. Check GIVE IT AWAY.
Honestly, RHCP has one of the most extensive catalogs of really good songs spanning 30+ years... Since you live in L.A., it's a bit cliché but you should give "Under the Bridge" a try if you have not already..
"Everybody's been there and I don't mean no vacation" refers to California's massive influence on media (tv, movies, etc) to the point where everybody feels like they've been to California, even if you've never visited the state.
It’s already been alluded to in these comments, but the line, “Well, everybody’s been here, and I don’t mean on vacation,” refers to the overall premise of the song. “Spies from China try to steal your mind’s elevation:” the epicenter of the world’s drama and paranoia. “And little girls from Sweden dream of silver-screen quotation:” the allure and romanticization of California and Hollywood. “The Sun may rise in the East, at least it’s settled in the right location:” A way of summarizing California as the far edge of the universe. It’s Californication.
This is the first reaction channel I have discovered in it’s freshman state (with the rock stuff I mean) and I love it. If you want some more to react to that is not overly hard and metal you should check out some ”white boy” blues bands from the 70’s. A lot in common with the old school soul and Rn’B. If you want more Red Hot Chili Peppers I suggest you check out older stuff that is funky rap rock. Give It Away is one of their biggest hits and it’s an amaaazing song!
This is CA music!! 😂 I love this song. Red Hot Chili Peppers have some serious bops!!! Give it Away & Under The Bridge should be added to your list too
Yes, they made "californication" •"Scar Tissues" •"Under the Bridge" •"Give It Away" You should react to Led Zeppeling •"Stairway To Heaven" •"Rock and Roll" •"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" •"Since I've Been Loving You" •"I Can't Quit You Baby" Also Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Freebird" & "Simple Man" The Beatles - "Dont Let Me Down" Jimi Hendrix Pink Floyd Stevie Ray Vaughn Santana
The best thing about playing in a band is that you play live instruments with your friends. It's that we can create the song together but never alone that's a part of the magic. Especially playing in front of a crowd where everyone needs to be on point. When it comes together and the crowd is dancing there isn't a better feeling in the world
As much as you love the good live performance aspect, you've got to watch While My Guitar Gently Weeps with Prince on guitar. He goes so unbelievably crazy on stage with some absolute legends, you'll love it!
It’s awesome that you’re exploring shit you haven’t really listened to before! Finding songs and artists like that and getting hooked is an awesome feeling. As far as suggestions go, Tommy the Cat by Primus. Definitely curious about how you’d feel about that one.
I don't know if you've heard it or not but I can tell you this, YOU WILL LOVE (DIRE STRAITS - SULTANS OF SWING) I swear if you haven't heard it yet you will really appreciate this suggestion.
The Chili Peppers did a cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground, and you should absolutely check it out. The way Flea slaps the bass on that song is just out of this world.
awww baby flea in that video. I have gone to see them over a dozen times, they always throw the best concerts. The last time I saw them flea took stage with his daughter for a duet, her on sax and him on piano.
Dude, your comment on what it sounds like to have multiple people playing instruments to make a cohesive sound is why I got so into funk music in my mid 20’s! Got like 12 people on stage contributing to the overall soundscape… amazing
“Well, everybody's been there and I don't mean on vacation.” As in we’ve all been to California via the consumption of media and Hollywood. The first view and defining idea of what “America” is to much of the world is through through movies.
The phrase 'being Californicated' has been around since the mid-70s or a bit earlier. RHCP did make Californicated/tion a more mainstream term, followed by the series. I remember wearing buttons on my denim jacket (in 1976) saying stuff like "Don't Californicate in public" - bought at Spenser's Gifts, so not a mom-n-pop outfit. All respect to RHCP for their excellent use of sarcasm and irony to deliver their messages to the masses (even if half or more don't understand what they're hearing).
Im Eclectic when it comes to music, 55 yo NY Rican that grew up in NYC during the MTV generation. This is when Rap and Rock merged to give us many fusion sound we here today. And let's not forget phunk and electronica the was also part if my generation. Love the fact that decades later youngings like yourself are appreciating music as art.
Californication is a TV trope term more commonly known as "Hollywood Provincialism." It's the reason why a show based in one location will have things called by terms not commonly used in that area, but that are used in California. Like a show based in New Mexico calling the Motor Vehicle Department the DMV, when it's the MVD out there.
Rock and roll has diverse roots. Rock and roll evolved mainly from jump blues but also country, folk, doowop, gospel and classic, swing jazz. Naturally some artists would emphasize some of these kinds of music and de-emphasize others leading to a noticeable difference in the sound of their music. the genre encompasses a lot over the last 70 years of music! Thousands of sub genres of rock………
RHCP are LEGENDS! Choose any song from their live concert at Slane Castle. Flawless from start to finish. Flea on the bass and John on the guitar are some of the best to ever play.
"Everybodys been here and I don't mean on vacation" means that hollywood exports culture to the entire world. It has deeper meaning, this entire sing is a criticism of that culture.
2 albums you wanna BE SURE to listen to by them, Mother's Milk & Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The latter was on REPEAT infinity for... a long time, a long time. These guys have an entire catalog and it's ALL FIRE!!
I love how honest you are with these reactions! I love this song but I totally get how someone wouldn't like it and I really respect how you speak your mind instead of pandering
Man like what you said back in the day people were so mad that Elvis was bringing black culture to the white youth and a White southerner at that. They didn't care he was stealing it for lack of a better word and they couldn't just call him out on that so they called it vulgar and too sexual lol I wish he had given more credit for it but hey it slowly brought people closer together at least.
I have a feeling you'd really like some old stuff from before they mellowed out a lot. The song "Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky" really slaps pretty hard. It's like funk/metal.
I would love to see what songs you eventually end up in your new Playlist for this genre you are opening up to. And what artists get invited to the cook out
Try pixies! A weird band to be sure, lirics and soundwise, but so much influential and creative. "This monkey's gone to heaven" is a classic, but there are so much more, like "Caribou" or "Gigantic", or "Cactus". They are known for changing from slow and calm to hard and loud all the time.
It's good to see a you try something different than what you're use to. It says volumes about your personality. Props to you!!!! Btw- Give their songs "Scar tissue" and "around the world" a listen.
"Everyone's been here before, and I don't mean on vacation"... for decades the most filmed place in the world was southern California. It was were almost every film and commercial we have all watched comes from. We have all been there, either thru a Gushers fruit snacks commercial full of Rodeo Boulevard palm trees, or the latest star in the sidewalk being revealed on the nightly news... and we all wanted a piece of that for ourselves, selling out to the Californication of society.
Peppers catalogue of Top-Notch Bangers is Vast: Otherside.. Scar Tissue.. Soul To Squeeze.. "Stadium Aracadium- whole album!!.. but have fun with this great band!!
You haven’t been here on vacation but you’ve visited this place in your mind, like you’ve imagined yourself a successful star on the movie screen it’s so natural so we’ve all done it
From what you said in this video, and how much you love the guitar in others... try "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" by Megadeth. It's long, but very worth it. Love your content, just subscribed.
JoAnn AKI am a huge fan and know everything about rhcp. It is absolutely not true that many songs are inspired by drug abuse. Only Under The Bridge talks about addiction and rebirth. However it would be Kiedis not Keidas 😊
Awesome review! Forty Six & 2, by Tool. Talk about alter your view of what music and creativity is. Once you hear that, you may or may not be tempted to check out their whole discography (Stinkfist, Sober, Schism).
"Knock Me Down" is very old school Chili Peppers before they really blew up in the mainstream. Funky, catchy and rocking all at once. One of their best ever. Check it out.
This song is about the positives and negatives of California culture. "Everybody's been there" means everyone's been influenced in some way by California culture with Hollywood for example.
Rob - you MUST do a reaction to Paranoid Android, Weird Fishes or any other song by Radiohead. They're a small band from here in the UK who've been putting stuff out since the 90's - you might have heard of them 😁😉
So to explain a bit about the song, he means that California's influence on culture is almost all encompassing, that it influences everything. It's a helluva song. Lemme.make a recommendation because he mentions Cobain in this song, Nirvana, specifically Smells Like Teen Spirit. It's the true beginning of grunge, was the death of the 80's glam era. You've probably heard at least notes of it, but damn if.it isn't a song worth giving a listen to.
You Know ive watched lots of People react to rock music and they always like any song sometimes I think they are lying but you are the first one that is honest and respectfully said that didn't like the song I appreciate that, even though I think the song is great those were valid reasons not to like it.
Hey Big Rob - love your video man! I love the Chillies - their Blood Sugar Sex Magik has more energy - Suck My Kiss is a favourite of mine. "And I'm sailin'"
This is what the internet should be: people sharing all the magic we can create and appreciating how incredibly diverse influences and ideas work together. What would you suggest a white guy to check out? I've been stuck in this bubble too long and don't know where to even begin looking (symphonic prog rock/metal is my jam, but blues gets me deep in my soul as well for example)
Flea is one of My personal all time favorite bassists, I think most would say that he's easily one of the greatest of all time-- certainly our time. RHCP has a lot of great bops I'm sure many have already recommended. so, hope you give more listens to some RHCP you haven't heard. *I think it's important to note that rap, rock, hip-hop, R&B; these genres all have the same roots. Tin-pan alley, the blues etc. was the start. and we all owe everything to those legends
Music videos were a big part of the success of these songs. Being an MTV generation kid I relate to the videos more than just the song. Still see The Go-Go’s Vacation video when it hear it.
No Season Playlist is crazy XD XD you're hilarious. I wonder if in the future you'll do the same for video games OST or Anime OST. I know you're from the FGC but even so It would be super entertaning too, like listening to ost like The Merciless Savior from Trails of the Sky, N'Final Battle Theme from Pokemon Black/White, Dragon Knight from Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai or Ghoul's Battle theme from Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Anyway, that series is amazing keep doing those!
