He was 25 years old when he sang Cara Mia the first time in 1965 & sounds exactly the same 46 years later in another video on RU-vid, check it out. He sings with the Alley Cats 50 years later. Hell of a nice guy I met him several times & got his autograph. He was still able to hit all the notes into his 70s. Sadly he's retired now but deserves the rest!
I had the priviledge of seeing Jay Black (of Jay and the Americans) in a live concert about 10 years ago and he STILL sounds every bit as good as he did in the 1960's. He hasn't lost any of his talent or vocal skills. Yes, he's a bit older, but still an AMAZING performer and artist who brought his audience to tears! Bravo, Mr. Black! Well done!
You gentlemen reviewed one of the best voices in music and sad to say one of the least recognized and even sadder he just passed away on October 22, 2021. Thank you for recognizing Jay Black of Jay and the Americans.
I saw him at the Silver Legacy during a Hot August Nights week. Many stars from late 59 -60s appeared. Jay Black blew them all away with Cara Mia and This Magic Moment. I would love to see this review again but Jay is singing in heaven I hope.
100 correct spot on Jay Black is seriously one of the most underrated singers of all time there is a reason people do not copy this song and you have just heard why
Wasn't his voice incredible? I say was because he died today and I'm heartbroken. This Magic Moment is beautiful too. Come a Little Bit Closer is a fun song. And some of the videos on RU-vid show him showing off a bit and showing just how long he could hold some of those notes in Cara Mia. God bless you Jay, R.I.P.
I'll tell you what, I saw him a few times at oldie shows and I thought Gary Puckett was incredible, but when I say Jay Black in his late 60s singing Cara Mia, it freaking blew me away how a gentleman at that age could sing like that. So sad when he passed, but he touched a lot of people and had a nice life.
Yup, he adopted the name Jay Black to keep the name of the band Jay and the Americans unchanged! Talk about sacrifice for a cause! A Legend for the Ages!
On Behalf of ALL your Many Fans In Australia Jay. Thank You so Very Much for your Voice, Music and Songs. May you Rest In Eternal Peace Singing with the Angels and Our Lord Jesus. The Voice is Silenced, but NEVER EVER Forgotten.
Excellent point "he opens his mouth and it just comes out." This is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Hearing it now is devastatingly sad. We lost Jay on 10/22/21 at 82 yo; We lost "the Voice." 😪😪💓💓
Jay Black had one of the greatest voices in 🎶 music. No electronic enhancements no autotune...just pure talent. I am 65 and blessed to grow up with the greatest music. Now it is fun to watch another generation hear what we had. Darling you need a Sudafed...allergies huh!?!
Jay Black was a legend back in the 60's. The Americans had a couple of top 40 hits back in the day. Too bad we have lost Jay Black. He was one of the greatest voices in Rock & Roll history. Rest in Peace. Great reaction as always.
Same here. I saw Jay And The Americans in concert in 1965 when Jay Black looked and sounded just like in this video! He had an absolutely amazing voice! And so did the other guys in the group!
This is Jay Black at his best...One of the worlds greatest singers. He hits it out of the park with this great classic. Priceless! Note: I consider the music of the 60's as the greatest decade in rock and roll history.
Great when young lads like yourselves can appreciate artists like this, as well as modern great artists....Never shut out any good music from whatever genre, you'll miss soooooo much talent!
I loved watching you enjoy Jay Black for the first time. You reminded me of two little boys looking at all the Christmas presents under the tree. Peace.
I grew up with this music. I think Cara Mia is the song that best shows Jay Black's vocal range. Jay and the Americans was probably one of the top groups of the 1960s and 1970s, and with good reason.
I love this song and was only 13 years old when it came out. I though it was as close as you could get to opera, without it being opera ! It wasn't till years later I learned that Jay Black - who did that fantastic vocal - was actually 'opera trained', as a singer. May he RIP. Glad you liked it, you guys ! :)
At the age of 62 he was still able to sing this song just like he did in the year 1966?.. he was able to hold all of the same notes just as long. Not bad for an older person. Can you please do something on Stevie wright of the Easybeats. He did a song called Friday on my mind. With them... and he sang the song called,." Evie part's ..1 - 2 And 3. . He was a great performer and song writer.
This song which I only recently heard at age 65 just completely blows me away!!! Jay, the back up singers, instrumentals just send me into the stratosphere!!! Fun to listen to these men's reactions.
Tell me about it! I was born in 1980 so I grew up listening to stuff from both ends of the spectrum anything from about 1955 upto about 2005 ish... Not too much after 2005 except maybe Pentatonix. As I got older, I became more grateful for my parents as they grew up in the early 50s and 60s... This was there era it the 60s anything from about 56-7 up into about 74-6 was the best era of music ever! The 60s has become my favorite decade of music!
Hey!!! Every generation is going to have people who are adventurous and curious enough to listen to a few of the classics and then they will want to hear more. That is why this music will never die.
jay black is this out there performing.in his 70s but the voice is still there.at one time,he hit the highest note and held it the longest of any rock singer.his stage show is amazing.jay was a favorite of mafia kind bin john gotti who dubbed him,"the voice".
Jay Black had one of the most incredible voices that I ever heard. Jay & The Americans were & still are one of my favorite groups of all time. Jay Black rest in peace.
I've always loved this song!! So many great songs and voices from the oldies! Sometimes I just put on the oldies station and just kick back and listen to a peace of my parents past...they had some serious talent.❤
The story goes on this : a one-time take, the bell hit the note. Jay thought it was too high, but he went with it anyway and nailed it. Keep diving into this group. You won't find a bad song.
Played this incredible song on the juke box at Chanute Air Force Base, July, 1965. Threw a lot of coins in the 'box' back then, loved it then and now, of course. Jay was and music still is incredible!! R.I.P.!!
There were amazing singers during this period. Jay & The Americans were one of them. Glad to hear that younger people are willing to listen to the music of my age.
This is one of the best pop songs ever. What I like about this video is that even one of the backup singers (on the left) at about 4:45 is as blown away as the rest of us.
Another great voice from the 60's !! Like Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers--these singers of those days had real talent and even greater sound. Those were the great days and when Elvis broke onto the scene, sedate music from the early 50's was put away. He opened the door to the great music and talent that followed. Thanks for your reaction. Cathy Farrell
You guys GET IT. You understand what you're listening to. Beautiful song, but, Jay Black's voice. That's the whole point. Jay has that power in his voice that few have. And, she showed you some range, with his high notes.
There's more to this guy than you realize. He was the entertainer/singer to the mafia. He was a John Gotti favorite. Jay sang at Gotti's daughters wedding. When Gotti went on trial, Jay Black was in attendance each and everyday as noted by the FBI.
