The great Curtis Mayfield. So many songs. "Superfly," "Pusher Man," "Junkie Chase," "Fred is Dead." What an amazing singer and guitarist. Jimi Hendrix and Curtis played together for a while in the mid 60s, until Jimi went solo and became a superstar. Please, more Curtis Mayfield.

Mayfield was a producer, writer, composer, and performer. Back in the 60's and 70's, Chicago cranked out alot of music from Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls, Donnie Hathaway, and Earth, Wind, and Fire, just to name a few. Certain places at certain times in history were music hotbeds. Asia had mentioned that this may be disco, but this is actually pre-disco. However, I think disco came out of R&B and Philly soul. Philly soul had not only the beat, but great orchestration and arrangements in the backend. Groups like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, the Ojays, and MFSB(theme song for SOUL TRAIN) sounded like early disco to me. Disco was like 80's metal and grunge in that copycats and subpar performers got in and watered the early talent pool down. I always like the arrangements that Mayfield put in his music. I think he finally left Chicago and moved to Atlanta in the 80's

Yes!!! What a unique, talented artist we had in Curtis Mayfield! One of my favorites all the way back to his days with The Impressions, but his solo work went to a whole other level. Takes me back to the early 70s...a grittier but more authentic time. Gone way too soon 😕

I'm not surprised that this blew you away! Curtis Mayfield (with or without The Impressions) provided the soundtrack for the Civil Rights Movement and was literally the "Martin Luther King of Black Music." Equally captivating were both his live and studio versions of "(Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below We're All Gonna Go", "Freddie's Dead", "Between You And Me, Baby" with Linda Clifford, the live version of "The Makings of You" and both "I'm So Proud" and "Check Out Your Mind" which he made with The Impressions. Not only was he a performer but he was a songwriter, producer, record company owner and visionary! Another song in this same vein was "Hush Child" by The Stairsteps, a family group Curtis often produced that was discovered by one of the members of The Impressions, that scored heavily with "Ooh Child" and "All Night Thang" (under the name "Invisible Man's Band").

When Mayfield was front man with The Impressions, they did what was referred to as a call song: "We're A Winner". Also released at time were hits such as "I've Been Trying" and "People Get Ready". And one of the most popular albums for Brothers in Viet Nam was "Back To The World".

The extended version is much better. There are some live versions on RU-vid that are amazing. This was the radio cut. A lot of radio stations didn't want to play tracks longer than 3 minutes so a lot of artists made a shortened radio version of their songs.

Soul is a pretty cool genre, very powerful music. very introspective and great stuff. His first album here, the Soul music is very theatrical and sounds like a full orchestra. We People Darker than Blue is probably the most powerful song on this album. you MUST listen to that one. Anyway, his later music got more into Funk, giving it a broader appeal. Soul is not as easy-listening because its such serious powerful music (which is fine)
