Ok. You can't just say "tuning in from Fiji." You must, MUST rub it our faces, that WE, a) aren't in Fiji b) don't LIVE in Fiji c) will NEVER live in PARADISE. I expected better from you N--6!
Dan Hartrman passed away from AIDS several years ago, just FYI. I'm HIV+, and followed Dan's career closely, both with the Edgar Winter Group and solo. He did have a disco hit - "Instant Replay" - which is simply charming. Thanks for delving a little into his work - I appreciate it.
I sing this to my wife whenever I hear it. I think it was in movie Streets of Fire. Just some trivia, he was also a former member of the Edgar Winter group. So now you’ve reacted to Edgar Winter Group, Rick Derringer, and Dan Hartman.
Yep. SoF. Another great Walter Hill joint (one of my favorite directors). An underrated movie, IMO. Saw it in the theater (it was a box office bomb). I recommend this movie for a reaction video.
@@RabbiSteve I saw it in the theatre too. I love this movie! Great cast, Willem Dafoe, Diane Lane, Rick Moranis, and Amy Madigan, they've reacted to 2 of her movies already. I'm a huge Walter Hill Fan. I recommend people watching a lot of his films, "Streets of Fire", "The Warriors", "48 Hrs", "The Long Riders", "Extreme Prejudice", "Red Heat", "Southern Comfort". He is the king of action movies.
Dan was an amazing singer and performer (look up this one on Letterman) but also write songs for other artists. He actually offered this song to Hall and Oates because they were good friends. They turned him down so he made it into a huge hit all by himself! They stayed friends and they ended up recording a version (after he passed) as a tribute. ❤️
Funny Fact ... -- He also had to serve prison time right as the song started to chart... so he actually made money off the royalties, because the Label did not have him out touring and racking up bills
I never knew about him offering this to Hall and Oates... but it makes TOTAL sense, as this sounds SO much like them! Good for Dan for doing this himself!
Yes please! Streets of fire is one of my all-time favorite cult films. With a lot of great actors. The soundtrack is fabulous. A lot of music is featured in this movie.
This is from the movie “Streets of Fire “. It’s had one of the best soundtracks ever. The video playing on the TV is scenes from the movie. The movie was good but wasn’t a big hit but the soundtrack was huge.
Dan Hartman was such an underappreciated artist. Jay, you've forgotten how much you loved Instant Replay, which is VERY uptempo. I Can Dream About You with its moving sidewalks was written by Dan Hartman for Hall & Oates, but they turned it down. NOW, you absolutely must hear his epic Vertigo/Relight My Fire. It is definitely FIRE! RIP Dan Hartman, who was taken from us too soon by AIDS.
One of my favorite songs! My dad could not understand that the video was from a movie and that it was not a black male group singing this song....we still laugh about and he STILL does not believe me that it is Dan Hartman!
For decades, I also thought the guys on the TV were singing the song...until this past year or two when I saw the music video again and couldn't believe it was the white guy singing it! Only took me about 40 years to realize this!
Dan actually wrote it for Hall and Oats but they were too busy finishing up another album I believe so Dan sang it himself. I actually just found that out earlier today lol 🙏🏻
The singers in the TV behind the bar were ‘singing’ I can Dream in the movie “Streets of Fire”. I VERY highly recommend you see it. You will see a young Diane Lane, Rick Moranis, Michael Pare, and a very nasty looking Willem Defoe, all along with great music!
" I Can Dream About You" is one of my all-time favorite songs of the 80s! You should check out Dan and his band's performance of this song on Soul Train. They are on fire! 🔥 And, Jay, if you want a faster Dan Hartman song, check out his disco hit "Instant Replay"! 🎶
I bought this 45 record when it came out and I still love hearing it nearly 40 years later. It is sheer perfection from beginning to end. It has soul, power, tenderness, sweetness all rolled together. His lead vocals are outstanding. And I love the backup vocals. My favorite line is "Moving sidewalks -- I don't see under my feet". That totally captures the feeling of desire. Just hearing this song makes me feel young again.
This was a very popular song in my childhood. The 1980s was a great time to be a music fan. There was so much variety in the music. A lot of the performers carved out their own paths in their musical expression. I miss the 1980s it was a great time... I loved this song back then.
I absolutely love this song! It was featured in a 1984 movie "Streets of Fire" which is.described as a rock and roll fairy tale. Fun movie if you just go into it just looking for fun, not seriousness or importance. That movie also has some scenes with The Blasters which is a band y'all should really check out. They are hard to categorize, but I'd say they have a lot of rockabilly influences, spiced up with some TexMex and punk. 😁 That's as close as I can get on a description. Songs from them I'd suggest would be: American Music, Marie Marie, Border Radio, or I'm Shakin'.
Other songs from movie to checkout are "Nowhere Fast" and '" Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young" both by Jim Steinman who wrote songs for Meatloaf and Bonnie Taylor among others
Good ol days.. everytime I hear this, I remember Casey Kasem and American Top40.. 1984,1985 great years in music. If I recall correctly, these were in or almost the same time when this was in the countdown, along with Don Henley's Boys Of Summer, Steve Perry's Oh Sherrie, Night Ranger's Sister Christian, Kool & The Gang's Joanna and Misled, Duran Duran's Wild Boys, Wham!'s Everything She Wants, John Waite's Missing You, Van Stephenson's Modern Day Delilah, John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band's On The Dark Side, etc...
He was the bass player for the Edgar Winter Group. Remember when y’all were blown away by “Frankenstein”? He wrote and sang “Rock-n-Roll Hoochie Koo” for the EWG. He was a phenomenal musician and songwriter.
Listening to his a vowel lyrics just melts like honey and the guitars funky jabs and bass! Aww i could just listen to that part over the over! His guitars mix is captivating to the 80's sound. It takes me back to good moments ✨️
This song was featured in 'Streets of Fire' and Robert Townsend, Mykelti Williamson (Bubba from Forrest Gump) and Grand L. Bush (Agent Johnson from Die Hard) were members of the group featured in the film as the song's performers.
Great song from an underrated artist, who, sadly, left us way too soon, passing from a brain tumor at the age of 43. One of my other favorite Dan Hartman songs is "Get Outta Town" (wayyy more upbeat, Jay!), which was used in the hilarious 80s Chevy Chase movie "Fletch". I think you two would love that film - it's kind of in the vein of Beverly Hills Cop, lots of comedy and some action but with a dramatic story line. Chevy Chase is BRILLIANT in the role. This song also appeared in a movie (soundtrack) called "Streets of Fire," a rock musical also from the 80s.
I love "Fletch". I saw it in the theatre and the sequel. Love the song "Get Out of Town". Where they use it in the movie is such a great scene! Classic! So many 80s movies had great soundtracks with original songs.
Dan was riding in a limo in NYC, getting around to doing some Christmas shopping, when he noticed that shoppers were hustling and bustling along, yet not really at all enamored with shopping for Christmas, which gave him the idea of this song, which he was in the middle of writing as it already was. "Moving sidewalks I don't see under my feet Climbing up from down here below Where the streets see me lonely for you, oh" It was his way of expressing that Christmas shopping has turned into a chore, not fun anymore, just going through the motions, as having these strong feelings for another and wanting to just be with them instead. Pretty clever and genius, yet also very relatable with the thoughts and words that he chose for this song, his signature solo song.
The umpha umpha umpha of the late 1970 to early 80. Really something else. Remember Sylvester. You make feel mighty real. And Do you wanna funk. Jeez I wish I could recall those days 😃😃
an all time favorite. originally written for hall and oates but they already finished the album they were working on and had no space for it so dan recorded it himself. emulating h&o’s backing vocal arrangements
According to Daryl Hall, Hartman had initially written the song with Hall & Oates in mind, and offered the song to them to record as their own. Hall & Oates declined, as their new album was about to be released.
Huge hit when it came out; still resonates to this day. It's one of those songs that was an instant favorite and just persists as a song that always feels good to listen to. Love it!
One of my favorite Dan Hartman's songs was Relight My Fire. This song was from a movie called Streets of Fire- which is what they're showing on the TV.. He was such a talented guy and he is greatly missed
Such a phenomenal song. I would also recommend "You Are" by Lionel Richie. It's less mainstream today, but was HUGE in the 80's. Great song. Also Cheap Trick's "The Flame" is awesome.
He wrote, played bass, and sang lead on the Edgar Winter Group “Free Ride”. A great song but very different. Also the girl in the video is Joyce Heyser who starred in “Just One of the Guys” around the same time this song came out.
Love this song, one of my favourites from the 80s. My favourite part is at the end, you think the song is winding down and then he comes in with that break "I don't understand it..."
I really don't remember this song from Dan Hartman. I loved him in the Edgar Winter Group though and a lot of his solo work. When I was much younger, I used his record "Instant Replay" for my routine when I tried out for a semi-pro football team cheerleader position and ended up on the squad. Those were a fabulous few years for me. Got noticed and even became a model based on it. For that, I'll forever be grateful to Dan Hartman. It was fun at that age. Of course, after a few years, I moved on from that and the superficiality of it all. I had more in mind for my life.
One of my favorite songs from the soundtrack 'Streets of Fire'. They are watching clips from the movie, in the bar. Check it out on the movie channel if you can! Great reaction!
Dan Hartman was the bassist for the Edgar Winter Group. He played on the phenomenal "Frankenstein" live video you watched. Hall and Oates do a great cover of this one.
Dan, who helped produce Edgar Winter on a few of his album, who was a member of the band for many year, and was the bass player on the "Frankenstein" video you reacted to had quite a few hits. His greatest two IMO were his great, classic dance singles "(Vertigo) Relight My Fire" and "Love Sensation" both featuring the great Loletta Holloway.
Thanks for a great memory. Such a great little rockin' tune, need to add this to my walking tape.🎶🎶🎶🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️💕💕💕 Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Hello, Jay an Amber. Dan Hartman is certainly talented. The first song of Dan's that I heard was his first single, Instant Replay in 1978 when I was, 17. I love it, still!
This song reminds me of going to my grandparents house at the NJ shore, was always on the radio. 📻. He also did a song on the soundtrack to the movie Fletch, song “Fletch get out of town”.
He actually offered it to Hall and Oates initially but they had to turn it down because they had just finished making an album, so he decided to record it himself!
The TV clips from this song were because this song was part of the movie "Streets of Fire", where the guys on stage performed it as a motown-type of band.
First time I ever heard him was in the movie Streets of fire way back in the early '80s. That's why you see it on the TV there It's a scene from the film as a back vocal for the band in the film. Awesome song still love it to this day. I hope that you guys also look into other music films on your other channel streets of fire are being one of them. But also my favorite music film was Eddie and the cruisers one and two. With the background singing done by John cafferty and The Brown Beaver band. You guys should react to their music as well. Much love to you and your family and all the Rob squad family is well
The movie this song was from was called "Streets of Fire" which had an awesome soundtrack. New Music for you to check out. Paralyzer by Finger Eleven (Catchy song, Artistic video) Do What You Do by Mudvayne (Heavy sound, surprising vocals)
