Debbie Gibson holds a Guinness World Record. She is the youngest female to write, produce, and sing a Billboard number one single with her song "Foolish Beat." She was only 16 when it reached number one (1987). At the time, she was the youngest person to do it, but she still holds the record as the youngest female.

People don't talk about just how big Debbie was in her heyday. As someone else said below, she WAS the Taylor Swift of her generation. Back then, it was almost unheard of for a teenager to write, produce, and sing her own music. She sold out concert after concert, and while she eventually dropped from the charts, she stayed involved in music and in Broadway and found very good success. So nice to see you guys finding her music and sharing with us again!

She wrote ALL of her songs, and then played the piano in them, and then sang with that incredible sustained vibrato that few singers have. I had to double-check to make sure - this is your first Debbie G song! I'd venture that no other female 80s teenage singers' posters graced as many tweens' walls as Debbie Gibson and Tiffany (whom you've already reacted to). Debbie's start shot high right from the start, hitting the Top 5 with her first four hits - "Only in My Dreams", "Shake Your Love", "Out of the Blue", and "Foolish Beat". This song, and "Foolish Beat", were both #1 hits. She's now 52, and I'm happy to say, still active. She's been on Broadway, including playing Sandy in Grease!

"People don't understand what Debbie Gibson went through because, unlike many of the later female singers who were teenagers, Debbie Gibson had to deal with an industry completely controlled by adult men who considered a 15 or 16-year-old girl as a child. Debbie Gibson had to do everything from the scratch; she composed the music for her own songs, wrote the lyrics, and also produced her own songs, taking part in all the marketing, advertising, and image-building aspects of herself in a thoroughly professional manner, almost becoming an extremely perfectionist person. Her contemporary competitor, Tiffany, couldn't hold a candle to her, as Tiffany basically focused on covering famous songs from the past, classics from the Beatles and other groups from the 50s and 60s. Their successors who emerged in the late 90s were also teenagers, but they were really created by big show business companies, almost as if they themselves were money-generating corporations. Singers like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, among others, were the creation of adults who learned from Debbie Gibson how a teenage pop star should be. For me, it's truly admirable how Debbie Gibson, at just 16 years old, composed the music and lyrics of her songs, in addition to producing them. She filmed music videos, embarked on massive tours across the United States, filling stadiums, and yet she managed to graduate from high school with honors.

released as the first single from her second album, Electric Youth (1989). The song was written by Gibson in late 1987 and published by Creative Bloc Music, Ltd. and Deborah Ann's Music in early 1988,[citation needed] with the rights eventually administered by the Music Sales Corporation (ASCAP). A beta arrangement had been performed on the Out of the Blue Tour. Released on January 6, 1989, "Lost in Your Eyes" debuted at No. 42 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on the week of January 21. On March 4, the ballad climbed to number one and remained there for three weeks, becoming her most successful single and her fifth and last top 10 hit. In Canada, it also reached number one for three weeks, and outside North America, "Lost in Your Eyes" experienced moderate chart success, reaching number seven in Australia and the top 40 in Belgium, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom. One variant mixed from the original multitrack, "Lost in Your Eyes" (Piano and Vocal Mix/3:34), was only available in Europe as Track 3 of the CD3 release

This was the first single from her second album, Electric Youth. She had a few hit songs from her debut album, which is marking it's 35th anniversary this year. Only In My Dreams, Out of the Blue, Shake Your Love, Staying Together, and Foolish Beat, which made her the youngest person ever to write, sing, and produce a number one song. Debbie is a prodigy. She started playing the piano by ear at age 4, so her parents enrolled her in piano classes at 5 which is also when she wrote her first song with help from her sisters, which being 5 was about going to school. Her mom, Diane, was her manager who unfortunately passed away earlier this year.

She has such a natural, soothing vibrato as well. Not too fast and not throaty. People hear Debbie Gibson and they think of this pop artist who isn’t a great vocalist when she’s a brilliant one.

I was in the 7th grade when her album Out of the Blue came out. My little sister had it and I was mesmerized. Debbie was my first celebrity crush and I will never forget it. That album was amazing and the fact she did it all puts her in a league of her own. Incredible choice this week!

Yessss!! She was writing her own songs at 15! Foolish Beat is my favorite! Amber would like it. 😉So many favorites. She was one of my first female favorites in the 80’s when I was 6 😂 Love Debbie!! Omg this was so cute. So 80’s and nostalgic! She’s actually still performing and will be near me for the holidays. I’m thinking of going to see her. I love reading the wonderful comments here 💕💕

I love her so! Often the butt end of jokes, she is IMMENSELY talented as a singer and songwriter. Was a star in Broadway for years-which takes lots of talent. Met her after a showing of Beauty and the Beast. She was a DELIGHT! Also saw her in Cabarwt. 🤩 🤩 🤩

The 80s jokers just didn't have the hindsight of the late 90s teen pop trend.

Can you believe that, just because she was a teenager when she hit the charts, he music - including this beautiful song - was classified as "bubblegum pop." This was considered a derogatory term for music that would appeal to only teen and pre-teen girls. The critics completely ignored the quality of her voice, as well as the talent and smarts it took to not only write this song, but also to produce it and make all the arrangements. Those dismissive critics were idiots. If you want to hear more from Debbie, especially something with a "big moment," check out her song "Electric Youth."

She was a kid. It's innocence that made that song and her voice so special. I was Not into that kind of pop music back then but I Knew how big she was gonna get after hearing that song. Awesome voice.

She sounds beautiful. No auto tune. She writes , produces. Plays piano. I can’t believe she didn’t hit it bigger for a longer time…. Listen to shake your love. That’s a good one

I was totally obsessed with Debbie Gibson’s music as a child, especially the Electric Youth album. This song was just the height of romance to me as a five year old. 😆 I still love her music! Another band I absolutely loved as a kid in the 80s was The Jets. They were a band made up of 8 siblings (their family has 17 kids total!!) and they had quite a few hits. My favorite was “You Got it All”. You should check them out! ❤️

LMAO! Jay says "I'm beating that across the street" LOL "Quit telling on me, quit telling on me" That was funny! That was a fun fact to know! I'm so glad you love this song from Debbie Gibson, she was IT for us back in the day because unlike some artists today she is a pianist, she could actually write her own music, produce it and sing it! Amazing, absolutely amazing! Enjoyed your reaction!
