Mark wrote this song after his tour bus traveled down the actual Telegraph Road, US Highway #23, that runs some 70 mikes along the border of Detroit. He and the tour bus driver had a long conversation about the rise and fall of a once great city. This song could describe any large city that has fallen into blight and decay.

I applaud your way of responding to this spectacular performance with enthusiasm and appreciation for all the elements that make this so epic. You're right that the performers are at the top of their game, here with Mark and Terry Williams being the highlights, and that the song takes us on an epic journey with beautiful pacing and variety along the way. Mark plays with incredible clarity, melodic quality and creative flourishes. It's the kind of solo guitar playing that very few guitarists can do--where the playing is like a singing voice going through a range of expressions, rather than just doing some fast playing with no substance to it.

It was a joy to watch you react to what is without doubt one of the best live performances EVER ! I was in a pub back in the day when I heard this sound come out of the Juke box - it blew me away ! It was Dire Straits who hit the ground running with Sultans of Swing. That was in 1978, and I don't think a day goes by that I don't listen to them. I'm now 77 years old. I was a teenager in the sixties which was the decade that ushered in the greatest music metamorphosis, and I got another crack at it tn the 70's with the phenomena that is Dire Straits !! - Keep em coming. Best wishes from across the Pond !

New to your channel, but glad I found you! May I make a few suggestions for future Dire Straits reactions: The official video for ‘Money For Nothing’ from ‘Dire Straits (Live) - On The Night’ 1992, it’s one of the all-time best guitar riffs! Another mind-blowing (although more somber) track to check out is Brothers in Arms; I would suggest watching the official video first, and then checking out a live performance to appreciate Marks extended guitar solo improvs. I also really like the upbeat “Lady Writer”, which is a little shorter than some of their other tracks but very enjoyable, especially Mark’s signature style.

Thank You Australasia is even better in my opinion. One of the ultimate solos ever. In my opinion, of course. The Wembley one has less of a story and seems to wandering around aimlessly to a degree. The Australasia version has more of a story to it and more emotional note choices and phrases. I don't want to sound pretentious, but it's true. The whole concert is on RU-vid.

As I said after Sultans, I was there, at Hammersmith, the whole thing was brilliant, even at age 18, I knew how good it was. This is such a complex piece that we didn't think they'd be able to play it live, how wrong you can be! This was the encore, I don't know how they played like that for 2 hours or more. I knew Dire Straits from before they hit the big time. They became and remain my favourite band. Not only is Knopfler one of the greatest guitar players of all time, but his writing is top notch. The poetry in some of the lines is extraordinary. "Running every red light on memory lane" is one that will always stick with me. Also, he was surrounded by class performers, from guitar, to keyboard, to drums. I was lucky enough to be at the Alchemy concert between deployments with the Royal Navy, and was actually present for the night they recorded Sultans. I recall feeling hollow, almost empty during the track, but by the end I was filled with such joy and appreciation.

This the settlement of the US. Form exploration to 80s depression. Mark has to be one of the greatest singer/songwriters /musicians of our time. DS "Tunnel of love" is a story about Marks hometown. It's as important a piece as any on the ALCHEMY album, also check Private investigations, Romeo & Juliet. The whole album is excellent. What I love about Dire Straits is not only their talent and ability to write and perform amazing tunes, its that they look like they are genuinely enjoying themselves on stage. As you said, they feed off each other and they also allow a moment for each member of the band to shine. They also feed off the audience with dips in the tempo that allows the enthusiasm of the audience to be heard. The entire Alchemy Live concert is fire. Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing and Brothers in Arms really allows the band to bring everything they got to the table. However, there is another song, which you may know and have most likely heard, at least in part, that is best to review using the official music video instead of the live versions. Walk of Life is a song that goes back to the days when Mark Knopfler was just starting out, playing music as a busker in the London subway system. If you listen to the lyrics, he lists out some of the songs he would play or he alludes to them ("the song about the knife" is in reference to Jack the Knife). Not only does the video show the band playing a live performance of the song, it also uses sports bloopers to show you have to take your licks in life along with the high points. Hence, the Walk of Life. Mark's brother is also in the band for this video (white suit, purple head scarf, no shoes). The band is having so much fun in the video. It makes you appreciate the music even more. Warning: The music in Walk of Life is fresh and catchy and it will live in your head for a while. You may also find yourself belting out "Woooo-hoooo!" for no reason. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kd9TlGDZGkI.htmlfeature=shared Enjoy!

@@setonhillstudios Please consider how triumphant the guitar is at the end of the last solo. There is the largest "disconnect" in one of Mark's songs, since his singing is rather melancholy... Somehow the guitar annnounces the success of the Telegraph Road! What do you think?

Saw 'em live in '82, at Western Springs Auckland. They were huge here in NZ, where we bought more albums per capita than anywhere else on the planet ! I loved seeing a next gen guy enjoy my favourite Dire Straights song. I'm now going to be a cheeky Kiwi and request a Kiwi song....if you react to it, you'll have one more subscriber ! The song is called BE MINE TONIGHT by th' Dudes It features a three guitar melody at the end that I can't say I've heard something similar, in all my 62 years. Cheers from Downunder !!

My favorite song by them. Thank Goodness you didn’t do Sultons. This is soooo much better. The keyboardists a star. Mark finger picks! Oh yeah! He actually wrote this on the bus to Detroit on Telegraph Road. It’s a real road. It’s the story of the road. I’ve always wanted a Dobro.

@setonhillstudios - you're a drummer. For all the nasty jokes us other musicians tell about drummers and bassists, in our hearts we know that without you guys we can so easily sound like shit. You know about lock-in, about how the drummer, assisted by the bassist, is so often the glue that holds the band in sync through tempo changes, through mood changes or through the moments where the damn keyboard player wrote the song, thinks he's the second coming of Mozart and throws a new time signature at us every three bars... With a good rythym section it's hard for a band to go wrong. With a bad one, its hard for them to sound right. With a decent drummer who feels the song, we dont need no stinking click track :) And didnt Terry just prove that on this cut? I was lucky enough to have caught the Alchemy tour in London and there wasn't a bad track in the setlist... but this one was way up there, close to being the best of the night.

Being a drummer I am biased BUT I couldn’t agree more! And you’re right, Terry showed how it is done on this one! Everyone on the stage sounded great because they knew he was rock solid! Such an incredible performance and I’m glad that I got to watch it! Thanks for the insight and swinging by!

It would be nice to believe this sounded as good if you were there. It didn't! The sound was too loud and simply muddied. The sound on this video (as all live videos) was remastered in the studio. Doesn't detract from the great musicianship but very few performers have a good stage sound.
