I wonder how many of us had the exact same reaction. Silence, followed by "Wow" and then trying to absorb what we just saw and listened to. For me , this is the best cover of any song ever. Have a great day, folks.
That was the EXACT reaction I had to it. I was at work and was listening to Pandora. I literally stopped walking and had to take a sec. Then I hit repeat like 5 or 6 times.
It popped up on my recommendations. I thought "Man, this is gonna suck". But I listened. My jaw hit the floor and I had chills up & down my spine, especially the last verse. I think I must have played it 10 times. Definitely one of the greatest covers of all time.
I don't lesson to the group I don't care for there kind of music but I heard it first on a talk radio show and all I could do was just say WOW!!!! I give credit where credit is due he did It Justus if I say so myself think it is better than the original version
One thing I have noticed. It’s not the lyrics or the meaning behind the lyrics that makes people tear up. It’s Draiman’s voice. It’s his delivery. That’s what does it. I can listen to this 5 times in a row and will have tears on my cheek every time.
Me too.. you really don’t need to know what the song is about.. just listen.. or.. if you are watching the video.. just watch the sadness build into anger in his expressions, his beautiful voice, and those haunting eyes.. ( that are gorgeous BTW) AND listen with your heart and soul.. not your ears. I grew up on Simon and Garfunkel singing this song. I liked it, every now and then. It’s was actually kinda boring to me. This man stirred my heart and my soul with this version.. He was born to sing this song, it was written years ago .. JUST FOR HIM. I love him, for making me feel this song.
I grew up with Simon & Garfunkel: I saw The Graduate 10 years after it was released, when I was 14 ... Boy this version is so much more powerful!!! I was dreaming when I heard Simon & Garfunkel for the first time. I woke up with Disturbed.
Too many people only pay attention to the words and overlook the video. To me, this version is more of a criticism of today's music industry. The buried instruments, the musicians separated from the writers... The video transmits a more powerful message than the lyrics of the song: what's the point of having music composers if there aren't musicians to play the music and vice-versa? Music need real instruments to be dug up and played again and music composers need to be rejoined with real musicians.
My daughter argued with me that I had to listen to this version, a soft and calm song covered by a metal band. No, not going to do it. Much later I did listen and it shocked me beyond measurement. I've listened to it hundreds of times, sometimes five or more repeats. I sat here and listened, and even after nearly (figuratively) wearing out the record, I still had chills. I even had tears. Your reaction was so contagious.
Same with me!! I told my daughter I wouldn't listen to a remake of this song, but finally caved in. I was, and still am, blown away every time I hear it!!! Now that I know Paul Simon likes this version, I don't feel like I have betrayed him or Art in loving this version!!!
The original is beautiful. This version is powerful. It's like it brings out the actual meaning of the song. Especially these days, where people aren't talking about what needs to be talked about.
The original was written in the early 60's. I believe 1964, when Vietnam was raging. I was a teenager. People were taking to the streets protesting, trying to be heard but no one listened. This song said a lot about what was going on in the world. Sadly enough history seems to be repeating itself!!! The original of Simon and Garfunkel is great and Disturbed version is amazing!!!! Paul Simon sent David Draiman a note saying this version is the best he had ever heard!!
people talk, but people dont hear, and they listen, but dont hear, like trying to talk politics today....good luck with that if the person watches tv.... ugg...
we rarely think of the evil inside of ourselves as hurting us and others, but it truly does. the hardest truths to come to grips with is that we are the villains who believe oursevles to be saints, and we want ourselves to win. the truth hurts, and people avoid destroying evil, by believing their evil is benign. we are evil. to deny so that we are is to sweep it under the rug, to learn nothing and let history repeat itself, to let millions die without realizing the truth. we are not only the heros of our stories, but also the villians of others stories. one of the hard things in life is to realize, is that the devil sleeps within our hearts. let us pray he never wakes.
Don't you mean beautifully powerful? I was absolutely floored the first time I heard it. I caught the tail end of it on the radio, but thankfully heard the name of the band, so looked it up here on RU-vid...and was floored.
Every time, goosebumps, this song goes right to the core of my soul, Every time, beautiful, powerful and soul moving. This song was made, tailored for Disturbed , outcries the original.
It's rare for a singer to affect so many people the same way. When I first heard it, of course I knew the song, but I was not prepared for this man's INCREDIBLE voice. I had tears running down my face. They need to do more of this. Beautiful trained voice.
Disturbed does a cover on each of their albums I believe. There's this one, Shout 2000, Land of Confusion, I Still Haven't Found What I'm looking For. Probably others too. David's voice is fantastic.
Hes a brilliant man. Hes was trained as a Jewish Canter, even studied in Israel. Classicaly trained and still works with a voice coach to this day. He does touch your soul.
His grand father was the head Cantor at the largest synagogue in Jerusalem David says that's were he got his voice and you are one of the few that actually got it right
A. Bloke 2.0 Always Learning. Not agreeing with what Israel is doing and I’ll be the first and the Zionist issue and every life is important, whining and get out of jail free card, yea that’s a good one obviously you haven’t been their before. Mabe we can meet up sometime
You may not like metal but David Draiman has an incredibly powerful voice. It shows tenfold in this song. I like it better than the original because it touched my soul.
Every time I hear it, I tear up. I was active duty for 12 years...it's disturbing to me when I look around the world...and think about where we are, and where we are headed, as the human race. Silence is being forced on us by our own mankind, believing they are smarter. Or better. But look what we got. ...the people bowed and prayed, to the neon God they made... What are we doing? Conservative? Liberal? As a kid, I never knew how my parents voted. It was sacrosanct. You didn't tell anyone how you voted. Not even your spouse. But now we've made it WHO we are. Not American. Not United. Enemies. The quote you're looking for was on the original song video. Something like, "S&G sang it as a warning. Disturbed because the warning was ignored." I can't find it now.
Preparing for a memorial service, for a young man (44), who took his own life, two tours. I didn't know him, but the tears that flow from my eyes suggest otherwise. Wake up@
As someone who's pushing 60, I remember when my older sisters got this album by Simon & Garfunkle when this originally was released. The story behind the song was simple: Vietnam war was raging, civil liberties were being violated in the south by rich white politicians, and in general, people were very pissed at a lot of issues. Remember your history about Kennedy? People were still reeling from that just a few years prior. So in comes these folk artists, talking about talking w/out speaking (your actions), hearing w/out listening (ignoring other's opinions), writing songs that voices never sing (all the protest songs that were being written but never put to vinyl). As to the back story for the video, it looks like a post apocalyptic world where out countries have self destructed.
I grow up with it i am 63 I understand very what you are saying, I watched Oswald get shot live on black and white TV, that is burned into my memory, that moment. How they lied to us about the Gulf of Tonkin and then Johnson used it as an excuse to escalate the war. I remember.
The original, released in 1964, was a social commentary at the core. It was about the inability of people to really communicate and connect with each other. The neon god was a reference to technology. How ironic that Paul Simon saw way back in 1964 that people were paying more attention to technology than each other. How much more true is that today!? For the video, Disturbed took a bit more literal interpretation of the lyrics. You see the musicians picking up long disused instruments, implying that the silence had been there for a long time. Then you see the songwriters, writing their songs, but there was only silence. There was no music to allow their songs to be heard. Finally, you see the musicians on the boat crossing over, bringing music to the songwriters and breaking the long silence. "People writing songs that voices never shared. No one dared disturb the sound of silence." One detail that's easy to miss is the rising sun in the last moments of the video, symbolizing the lifting of the darkness of silence. My opinion and worth every penny you paid for it.
WOW, you explanation took this to a whole new level, a deeper level. Now, I want to watch it again with your interpretation in mind. Thanks for sharing!!!
All words fall short of this song. You can say nothing, only listen with watered eyes and a trembling heart watching the trees sway from the power of this song.
@@LIFEWITHJENNY4 Paul Simon sent David Draiman a note saying "it was the best cover he had ever heard" and thanked Disturbed for doing it. David Draiman said that in an interview and Paul Simon talked about it on The Late Show.
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is very difficult to do, and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on the performance Lau. Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", "Violence Fetish" and "Enough" by Disturbed too. They are a bit "heavier" ....lol...
This version, I got it. I love the original. I grew up w it. But this one taught me what the song is saying. Thank you Simon and Garfunkel for MAKING. THIS. SONG EXIST. Thank you Disturbed for making me PAY. ATTENTION. TO. THE. WORDS.
I hear you say you don't like heavy metal music. But then you have probably have not heard it all? I would highly recommend listen to "Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (Wacken Open Air 2013)" (and watch, since it is a great visual show too). This type of music is called symphonic metal. And this song will give you a roller coaster of feelings :-)
I was a kid when the original came out in the 60s. It and S & Gs song, the Boxer were the classic songs of alienation. It generally had an interpretation of being about the alienation of a few while surrounded by babbling masses. In other words a dysfunctional individual in a seemingly functional society. I love the original and this cover. I think that this cover in context is more about a dysfunctional society rather than an individual. I saw some lady from South America react to the Disturbed cover but with a different video that featured animation and hordes of people walking around oblivious to each other with cell phones. It was a great video. Your reaction is very interesting. Thanks for sharing it!
i was a teenager going into my 20's and i saw it as societal but a simple message. now, with this cover, i see it as anger directed at us , those who did not pay sufficient attention and do something about what was going on.
For every person I've ever heard say "I don't like metal", there's a person who never really tried listening to metal. Metal music encompasses a great deal more than just screamed vocals or fast guitar licks; while I'm overjoyed that songs like this one get noticed beyond the band's core demographic, I'm equally saddened that so many of the same people who heap praise on this cover don't use it as an impetus to look further into the _many_ genres of metal. People hearing without listening. :(
The song/ story was always quite dark but this version brings it home more. Never was it more true than today, we must keep talking to each other. Silence breeds fears and even hatred.
As much as I enjoyed the Pentatonix cover, this song with his passion and the visuals is SO much powerful... If you can watch this video and you DON'T get emotional, you had better have your soul checked.. I've watched this (and reactions to it) at least 20 times and I STILL tear up. GREAT reaction!
It's very powerful, but I just can't get too amped up over a cover... Nowadays they remake old movies...cover old songs...and relaunch old TV shows. Have people just run out of ideas? How much credit is deserved for just putting a different spin on somebody else's work when it's already a classic? Seems like the easy way out.
Ms. Martin. You will bless yourself like I did by listening to a young lady by the name of Kaylee Rogers. Singing "Hallelujah". The most beautiful, angelic voice ever. Emotion plus. This young lady must have a beautiful soul for a voice like this to come from.
Dont know if you'll even catch this comment , as you posted this video 8 months ago . But with the chance you do ,, your reaction is exactly why I prefer viewing a Womans response { in a heart wrenching experience } rather than a Mans . Men tend to either hide , cover or mask true heart felt feelings with bravado , a reluctance to show a broken heart or some other shield that will hide raw emotion . I dont understand why God created me with an ability { or curse } to fine tune into feelings { hidden or exposed } of those in emotional pain , dispair , loneliness , souls who have given up , hearts that seem to be crying out for human contact .. I say all that to say this ,,, I saw so much compassion and empathy in your facial expressions and body langauge that I really dont know which I felt stronger ,, the Song or your reaction . I do know this ,, watching you react greatly increased my enjoyment of the poetry put to music in this beautiful , ageless song .. I subscribed and will search for more videos at your site . Thank You for putting tears and chills out there for all to see . P.S, - There are lots of real Men out here that feel the heartbeat of the world like you do ..
I to loved your reaction Lau. I've recently turned 60years old, and i loved the original song, but this version just totally blew me away. I can't stop listening to it, and I'm now a great fan of the band 'Disturbed' i listen to it on RU-vid music and i crank it up !!!...LOL (i suppose it's a good thing my neighbours both work full time jobs 😊🤣. I've just fallen in love with the band, and can't stop listening, there's not one track that i don't like, and that's because i love all of them !!!Xxx 😊😃🤣😉😍😘💞❣💌
Lady Lau Martin, I think your response to this song was as real and raw as it gets! It's refreshing to hear someone admit that this genre is not for them. Especially after watching them thoroughly enjoy the rollercoaster ride of emotion that they had just experienced! I don't think you could offer the singer and band a better compliment! Great video!!
I have been enthralled with many "reactions" to this performance. You demonstrated an appreciation for lovely performance. Raw reaction and well done. Hang tight and keep sharing your appreciation.
The first time I heard this I was amazed. When singers have big voices but they hold the power of their voice back and sing something softer and really moving, it’s incredible!
Interesting fact, well for me I found out I had brain cancer, then that night I watch Conan “TV Show” of Disturbed live performance of it. Then when the music video came out, I had already had a stroke due to the surgery. My point being is it is something that ties us as humanity together. Plus I had the nurses singing it when they finally allowed me to have my phone back in the ICU. lol Still brings tears of inspiration to me, as I march into yet another surgery I thought I would look the song up. Love & Peace to you all, life maybe short but beautiful!
I Love this song, and evey time i hear this song it brings me to tears, this is one of the best songs that Disturbed has done and his heart was in this song....
Wow is the reaction most of us would have to this cover, and I am no different. It blew me a way. What an incredible voice, so much strength and passion. I have had to discover more music from Disturbed.
Great reaction. I felt exactly the same way after hearing his voice. I am embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of Disturbed before stumbling across reactions videos but love the power and control in his voice.
The fact that you were singing along makes your reaction that much more impactful. I too knew the original by Simon & Garfunkel as I listened to it regularly growing up, but was completely blown away by this cover by Disturbed. The passion upon which this cover is sung is without question and really puts an emphasis upon the incredible lyrics of this platinum classic.
Finally, someone else's reaction to hearing Disturbed's cover of "The Sound of Silence" was identical to mine. I had never heard this cover before. I knew of Disturbed of course, but not this song. It immediately gave me goosebumps, then as it built in intensity, I was literally shaking. When it ended, I was almost in tears. Seems that just a change in tempo, then the way in which he use's his voice, (especially his articulation of consonants) to build intensity and emotion. The use of the instruments, outstanding ! This has convinced me that this isn't just a "cover", This is THE version of "The Sound of Silence" you want on your playlist ! Just one man's opinion of course !
I'm SO glad that you had the same reaction as me! I cried when I watched this for the first time and it is still SO moving. Beautiful rendition, beautiful voice.
David Draiman creates this kind of reaction to everyone who listens to this song with heart. Your mispoken " Interpretation" is natural because of the way the song left you feeling.
I am a messenger through music. Many hear me, yet few, indeed, listen. This awesome singer makes us ALL to hear, and to LISTEN. His singing reflects who he really is: A Beautiful Human Being. NOTE: David Draiman (The singer) STOPPED A SHOW to save a woman's life. Who cannot listen to his message after knowing that?
Thank you ,thank you ,thank you...For being one of the only people I have watched showing a reaction to this video by disturbed and you did not talk all over the video while it played ...you didn’t Stop, voice an opinion, started again, stop it invoice an opinion 10 or 15 times during the video. This is a tremendous song by a tremendously talented singer...thank you for actually listening to it all the way thru.....😀🤘
Perfect reaction. You embodied every emotion. You truly are an emotional being. I'm subscribing right now. I hope everybody else does. You're real and that's rare. Thank you ❤️
i've watched many reactions to this song, from the teenager to old women, from vocal coaches to hard core metal and rap , hip hop fans....AND EVERYONE had a visceral emotional reaction to this song.....It is very powerful and crosses all genres
I remember the 1st time hearing Disturbed doing this song, driving down the road, at night on some hwy...I had tears streaming down my face. Floored isn't the word I'd use to describe what I felt. The only time in my life that I felt a song in my soul!
Ma'am, The song whether by disturbed or S&G isn't different, the more robust version from Disturbed may call out more to your soul, particularly if you have been somewhere uncomfortable, where someone in your group, squad, unit was being drawn into the light, or if were the medic, nurse, doc... trying to lasso the toe and haul them back. The song for me brings memories, those I saved and those I lost, I don't sleep without thinking about those I didn't get home, I sleep because some got home... i toss and turn wondering about that maybe could have been, those i lost. Quinn 6 actual out
Kudos to you just letting the song play then giving your reactions! I have watched many reaction videos and can't stand the ones that pause and comment! This is the first time watching one of your videos and I loved it!
Simon and Garfunkel were beautiful in their harmony and general execution of this song. This version though I like more...it is incredible, not because it is so different from the original, but because I feel it did the lyrics justice. It more accurately reflects the gravity of song's content.
Gee Jay I feel the same way about this one and their cover of Land of Confusion by Genesis. Love the original, but I feel the cover does justice to the lyrics and meaning of the song.
Glad to see that you have listened and reacted to this cover. It is, for me unbeatable. As much as I like Pentatonix. Their version is beautiful, but to me is gilding the lily. It is was too much stuff, beautiful, but too much. At the end. the guys with instruments are crossing the water to meet the guys with the music, hoping to end the silence. Greetings from Houston, Texas. Je suis francophone. Because I come from Louisiana and learned as a child speak both English, accented, and French. I am now 71 and retired.
This band has been one of my favorite since the first time I heard them. I got to see them at a huge outdoor venue in Virginia Beach 22 years ago and didn't even know they were one of the bands-the last band to play 👍👍👍❤ ! This song makes me weep-I can't even breath toward the end ! I hope this is the only song played if someone has a gathering for my passing! I am a big strong 57 year old man and I am not afraid of anyone except God ! This song by this band turns me into a pile of weak futile waste..... God have mercy on us all. PS you held up better than I .... 💘 to U ! Watch the performance of this on CONAN
I've seen several reaction videos to this song. I have to say thank you, thank you, THANK YOU...for NOT stopping the video and commenting while it was playing. We can see the emotion on your face and we all feel the same when hearing this song and I for one enjoyed watching you enjoying this song and not stopping every 30 seconds to talk about it
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon and Garfunkel sang to alarm us, Disturbed sings to give us a final warning. You should watch the live performance on Conan when you get a chance. Amazing performance despite the fact that David Draiman had the flu.
this video was a very welcome surprise to me. I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel in my life sound track... almost five decades later, i Finally heard the song the RIGHT way... Thank You David.
This song hit me the same way that it hit you, left me without knowing what to say, but when all is said and done, this is a phenominal version of a great song, Disturbed have made it even better, don't get me wrong I like the original very much, but lead singer David Draiman's voice is better than Paul Simon's.
Great reaction, I subbed and rang the bell lol :) Metal (Rock) has so many sub genre's so to understand and appreciate it all is hard if you are not used to listening to it, a lot of metal music is very emotional, for example Iron Maiden has a lot of songs based on history and fact. The singer from disturbed is classically voice trained. I guess what I am trying to say is that you probably have not heard enough heavy metal to appreciate the greatness that it has to offer.
I grew up listening to the original version by Simon and Garfunkel, my mom loved the song so it has a special spot in my heart...but when I heard the Disturbed version it gave me chills. Every once in a generation a remake actually sounds better than an original, lol. I’m telling you I got chills man, Draiman killed it.
"I get it now." I know exactly what you mean. I never really understood this song until I heard them sing it. It makes me cry almost every time I see it. It was amazing.
The first time I heard it, it touched me deep in my heart and soul. I have suffered 35 years is silence with anxiety and depression, no longer silent, getting help and better every day.
That’s pretty much the same reaction I had when I first heard it, I was almost creeped out at first but after watching it several times it was addicting and very emotional. He has a great range and ability to change his emotions as he progressed through the song. Every time I see it I see MORE, especially as he gets closer to the crescendo, what a talent.
This song was written during very turbulent times. The Vietnam conflict was starting to get on everyone's nerves, the slow social decay of the inner cities was starting to show its wounds and people were trying to find any distraction to help them through the day. Simon and Garfunkel were trying to share that time for all to hear. I must admit that David and the group Disturbed did what the original writers and performers could not. Disturbed put emotion into a great song about a very hard time in our past. I was part of that time and remember it well.
The specific interpretation is obviously a bit open, but generally it is considered how people don't really communicate anymore and our opinions are given to us by the media (the neon god representing TV)
@@sueanderson1096 That is a valid modern interpretation, however the song was written in 1964. I believe that Paul Simon has actually equated the "neon god" to TV.
I agree however in the last 100 years technology has surged so fast that I truly believe some people had prior knowledge as to the advances that were to arrive. The words that are written on those subway walls are also quite unnerving. Before you ask, yes I am a conspiracy theorist ha ha @@petervenkman69
The original was written in 1963 following President Kennedy's assassination. There was much turmoil in the country then...younger people lashing out, rebelling. Television, although still only in mostly city and suburban neighborhoods since stations were just being to be powerful enough to reach vast distances, was becoming relied upon for news and movies. Most people still went to local movie houses or Drive-ins to watch the latest movies. One such movie was the 1956 award winner, The Ten Commandments staring Charlton Heston. Movies then took years to be seen in accumulative numbers. By 1963, six years later, The Ten Commandments had been seen by most of the world. This, by many, due to the words closely mirroring the events in the movie, believe this is what inspired Simon and Garfunkel to write The Sound Of Silence.
