A lot of people think the Conan show version is better but personally I think this one,done in the studio with the added video clips is amazing,for me the visuals really add something to the song.The ending with the boat load of musicians crossing over to meet up with the song writers and the sun rising to dispel the fog,amazing.

To understand the lyrics, you must know the story behind them. Art Garfunkle went to Columbia in New York. He met a guy named Sanford Greenberg who loved music and literature like Garfunkle and they became great friends and soon roommates. One day Greenberg was at a baseball game and his eyes started failing on him. Soon he was completely blind. Greenberg quit school and went home and fell into a great depression. Garfunkle visited him often trying to convince him to get back to Columbia. Garfunkel told Greenberg to call him "Darkness" in sympathy. With a great deal of help from Art, Sanford did come back to Columbia. Garfunkel helped him to class, filled our forms and papers, etc. One day Garfunkle took Greenberg to Grand Central Station (10,000 people, maybe more.) Garfunkel told Greenberg he forgot he had to be somewhere and up and left him there to find his own way home (over streets of cobblestone...) Greemberg found the right train and in his mind he saw the graffiti on the subway walls. Greenberg finally made it back and bumped into someone who said, "sorry." Greenberg recognized Garfunkel's voice. Garfunkel was with him all the way home. Greenberg got his confidence back, went back to school and when Garfunkle needed money to get his first record cut, Greenberg gave him his last $400. With that Sound of Silence was published. Sanford Greenberg went on to Harvard and Oxford and became a wealthy businessman.

To me, this by far is the greatest cover I have ever heard. The original was perfect but this elevated even that to a higher level. I’d say this version is absolutely a perfect song.

You owe it to yourself to find and listen to the original version written and sung by Simon and Garfunkel. Both are very powerful, but unique in their emotion.

I have been diagnosed with PTSD. This song spoke to me the second I heard it. I am a HUGE Disturbed fan. This was gold to me. I wholeheartedly agree that silence is in fact worse than saying the wrong thing and that void which is left is filled in instantly with everything the mind is biased to, good or not. Dealing with your demons of what you have done in your life, who that effected and how spiritually you have to come to grips it. It's not easy. Faith, a supportive loving family and 2 undeniable friends (along with my 2 German Shepherds) kept me from losing my mind. Today, I am well adjusted, faithful, and grateful for all I have and have been thru. God is truly great. To those on the edge: A permanent solution to a temporary problem is not the answer. Eating a Glock, or an OD is NOT the answer. You are going thru what you are going thru because God created you to be able to withstand anything thrown at you. He would never give you something you can't handle. There is always a lesson to be learned. You might not see it; it might not be obvious but believe it. I have seen the depths of hell and I'm still here. Life experiences I now have had have a lifelong passion to honest discussions about the evil of drugs, the lie that "oh I'm ok to dive after a few drinks" and mental illness IS real. I have loved and lost loved ones to those evils. What I didn't lose is my faith. Little tip for anyone watching this song reaction, if they look confused at start of the song you know it's a genuine first time reaction.

Simone and Garfunkel wrote this song as warning to humanity as to where it was headed in 1967. Disturbed covered this as a rage against humanity for a warning ignored. It seems prophetic the line "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening" 50 years before cell phones, the internet and text messages. Now with all this technology humanity is more alone, more isolated and lonelier than ever before and the divide is only widening. This cover is a final wakeup call but, I think it will be further ignored and we are doomed to loneliness, isolation, strife and war.

First time watching your channel. As someone who battled depression for a very long time, I love the fact that you are using your platform to talk about mental health issues that most avoid. I struggled for roughly 26 years with severe depression. To make a long story short I turned back to God and started serving in church in youth ministry and after 5 or 6 months I realized that I was no longer depressed. I still have a few minor issues with it here and there but it's finally so much better for the last 20 years. I really appreciated what you said at the end of the video about the things people say, meaning well but it definitely pushes you down even more. God bless

Yep, this song has so much more with this version. It’s pretty incredible. It’s a rough one to listen to because of it. Emotionally charged and sung perfectly in my opinion.

As a single guy of faith at 35 who's been single most of his adult life, I HATE when someone says things like "It'll happen when it's meant to happen," "God has a plan," "There's plenty of fish in the sea," or "You just haven't met the right person yet." It doesn't make it any damn better or easier to take. I don't want your sympathy, especially coming from people who are in active relationships. It doesn't help. Sorry for the rant, love your content, and this song is incredible.

Simon and Garfunkel was the warning (as mentioned in other comments), Distributed’s cover is what’s happening today…….ie social media, texting, we are talking without speaking, and when someone does talk then we really don’t listen because it’s not in a text or on social media.

I can see how one might interpret this song as being about mental health, but it’s really about how technology has ruined society at the most basic level. The “neon god” is a reference to the invention of the television (remember, the song was written in the ‘60’s) and it’s about people no longer communicating with each other because they are too caught up watching tv to speak with each other anymore.

Thanks to S & G for writing and recording this classic over 50 years ago, allowing Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret the meaning.......a warning against an increasingly detached, unfeeling, cold society.......maybe more relevant today than in the 1960's

Fantastic song I enjoyed your analysis and talk at the end. I've had depression for most of my life. I also grew up in a very religious family. I definitely understand having my feelings invalidated. My parents would always make everything about god, and church. I once said to my mom. I want to talk to my mother not a preacher. Everything always felt like preaching or judgment. Not helpful or supportive. In my parents/ family's view everything is a spiritual battle of good or evil. That's ridiculous, and I'm turned off by the hateful ignorance and hypocracy being pushed these days by so called Christians. It's all right wing bigotry/hate or anti science and delusional conspiracy theories.

For over 7000 years people are dying, people are lied to, people are pressured to deny their own core being...al for fairy tales and people trying to abuse the fairy tales to gain power over of other people. Prayer without action is like a dinner plate without food. Because praying is the most infantile thing a person can do. A thousand people praying for food on the plate will not fill the plate until someone goes to the fridge or cupboard - or shop to actually get the food. Then when they get the food they need to cook it. Prayer to god won't change that - and no god yet has bypassed that. Faith in itself is nonsense unless there is substance behind it. If I am given directions to somewhere I don't know by someone I trust - I may have trust in them - but to blindly trust anyone - nope trust is earned

The scary part comes in when others think that they know what is best for us? I tend to side with the needy people. They may not know, but have an instinct for survival. Wow, I could NOT understand your initial interpretation, then your SECOND interpretation, and then I look at your title and then I see you pull the song into your heart for what it was for you. I NEVER heard ANY interpretation of this song like you did, and I purposely watch this video reactions because it is overwhelmingly the most emotional song, and it's A COVER OF SIMON & GARFUNKEL'S song, written just its the start of the Vietnam War and the draft. Demonstrations, the Flower Power and Generation Gap, politicians from governments that are warring, fighting conservative's refusal to see change, AND TALK ABOUT IT WITH YOUR LISTENING EARS, and so many people refused to hear, and then the people who NEEDED to speak to make a better change, were slow to move. Hence, the SOUND OF SILENCE. You have this bent towards intimate mental health issues, and that is really interesting to me because I'm a songwriter. I don't agree with your take, at least from the lyrics and what David Draiman was actually SAYING WAS WHAT WAS THE INTENTION OF THESE LYRICS, and it is based on geopolitical involvement leading us to ruin. The common refrain for this best-cover in history, is that Simon & Garfunkel were peacefully saying something towards our social awareness. They broke the Silence. DISTURBED and the MIND BOGGLING POWER OF DAVID DRAIMAN'S voice was almost like Archangel Michael coming down to kick some ass. So the original made us aware, DISTURBED screamed the words at us, angry and frustrated NOBODY HEARD THE ORIGINAL WORDS. I wish all leaders in the world were forced into an auditorium and to hear this song at 150 decibels at least 100 times. Keep em locked up in there. But, problem is... politicians that aren't making better changes don't have the ability to "feel", to "empathize" to recognize an EPIPHANY for them to use their power to do BETTER FOR US ALL. the sound of Silence is a cover of a Paul Simon song recorded by Simon and Garfunkel, the origional was a warning about the way America was heading in the sixties, as people were becoming more isolated and separated from reality by advertising and the American dream. The Disturbed version is the anger at the way people ignored the original warnings, personally I prefer the Disturbed version, it hits home with a simple message, speak up against what is wrong, do not hide in the shadows silently

You've taken that song out of context and focused solely on your own trauma as it colors your world-view. This song is political-sociology (a common subject of Garfunkel's lyrics) that was a common concern of the baby-boomers of the late 1960s who were trying to escape (or make sense of) the regimented thinking of our war time parents. However, from what you have said I think you would connect with "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel.

Hi, I have watched a lot of your reactions but never left a comment before. I know you react from your heart and mainly through your own experience in life. I would be really greatfull if you could react to a song that is very dear and near to me. It is from my favorite band ( Pink Floyd) but from an album that nobody ever reacts to as it is possibly their least known or appreciated albums but it's my favorite. The album is called The Final Cut and is a concept album It is told from the perspective of a soldier returning to civilization after conflict and the struggles he has trying to adjust. Like all Pink Floyd albums, they should be listened to on their entirety as each song usually blends into the next, telling a story throughout the album. However the song I would love for you to experience and react to is Pink Floyd The Final Cut from the album The Final Cut. Like the full album , it is an emotional rollercoaster with very deep powerful lyrics and you can hear the emotion in Riger Waters voice as part of the album also depicts his own father's death whilst he was serving in world was 2 in Italy. Loved it. Great song and cover. In your darkness speak up seek help, Don’t be a statistic. Been in the darkness before and found out that I was the light in my darkness. With seeing my light I was able to speak up seek help. My psychiatrist has been a great help along with some family and a few close friends. Now I’m on a spiritual journey and loving life. Oh I have Clinical Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Life is different now but then better

Wow. I see that you have not listened to one Genesis tune. But they have such a huge and quality catalog to plumb. People who only know their 'pop' side completely miss the Goth side. Although their lyrics touch very dark subjects I feel their message is generally one of hope. Although 'No Son of Mine' or 'Mama' would not seem to confirm this. Still, they have a humanistic trust that mankind can do the right thing. Check out 'Ripples' or 'Firth of Fifth' We need a more thoughtful and kind view today as the uglier elements of politics attempt to bring us down. Chaos seems to be in vogue. Now maybe do the original 'Land of Confusion' with Disturbed's version in one video. Or Ghost's cover of 'Jesus He Knows Me' with the original video. Quite different takes on hypocrisy.
