Couldn't agree more on this one, as not only is it one of Duran Duran's best tunes, it's one of the best Bond themes out there. It gets its proper due among DD fans, but among Bond theme fans, often not so much, as sometimes it doesn't even make top 10. It's a top 5 for me personally, and those 5 are probably interchangeable depending on my mood and day of the week.
Simon and his wife of 38 years live a five min walk from my family home, he’s regularly seen in the local shop and seems a really down to earth friendly guy
@@autygris1 He lives in Putney, South London.. I was raised there and left to live in another part of London quite a few years ago. My brother still lives in the same childhood home which as I said is a short walk from Simon.
He also nearly drowned taking part in a round the world sailing competition. I remember hearing about it and crying on the bus and having the piss ripped out of me by my peers 😂
Duran Duran has had so MANY great hits! And “Wild Boys” is one of my very favorites. Listen to how much BETTER 80s music is to 2020s music!! So powerful, so creative, so original, such amazing sound!! 🫠
John Taylor's basslines have always been like a clinic on how to play bass, in fact he does do tutorials on his youtube channel. A free bass tutorial from one of the greatest bass players in rock history? That's a great deal!
You should have met the high school or college girls who loved them. The first time I saw them in concert, there wasn't a middle schooler in sight...lol.
Go back to the very beginning with Duran Duran - 'Planet Earth' - in 1981. Such a thrilling year in pop music and culture. New sounds and new styles that shaped a shiny new decade.
Absolutely my favorite group. You should have seen my room growing up in the 80s. I had Duran Duran posters on every wall and every closet door. 😂😂 I got to see them in concert last summer here in Cuyahoga Falls and I can honestly say they still got it! #duranieforever ❤🎉❤
Simon Le Bon is the lead singer. John Taylor bass, Nick Rhodes synth, Andy Taylor guitar and Roger Taylor is the drummer. Also, this song live is the best. It is so amazing.
Yes! One of my favorite DD songs! (disclaimer: there are quite a number of them ;) Others I'd recommend: "New Moon on Monday", "View to a Kill", "Save a Prayer"
Well, I just searched for A View to a Kill and I don't see it. I don't know if it was taken down or what. Maybe I imagined they reviewed it? lol. I agree with all of your recommendations.
One of my favs is also "Come Undone"....as a side note a little gem of a song called "Election Day" had Simon at the helm for a band he formed with Nick Rhodes called Arcadia before Duran Duran got back together around 1986. Great tune.
I’ve always been a huge Duran Duran fan finally got to play out my 15-year-old self’s dream in June 2023. They played concert in Atlanta. They were really good and their opening act was Nile Rogers he produced this song and the reflex this song was supposed to be part of a movie soundtrack the Director of the video was wanting to do a full length film about a book of the same name the Wild boys. and that book was written, in 1971. But the movie never happened, but we still get this awesome song.
In the U.S., The Wild Boys could have been Duran Duran's second consecutive #1 song after The Reflex (#1 August 1984) leading to a 3rd consecutive #1 song with A View To A Kill (#1 July 1985). But, The Wild Boys anchored in at #2 for Four Straight Weeks. That must have been rough for the band. The first week for Duran Duran at #2, The Wild Boys was behind Daryl Hall & John Oates' #1 song Out Of Touch. The next week, Madonna's Like A Virgin leapfrogged The Wild Boys into the #1 spot from #3 & Duran Duran resided at #2 for three more weeks behind Madonna. Like A Virgin remained at #1 for seven consecutive weeks total. Not bad for Nile Rodgers who produced both songs.
My parents met Duran Duran at a family wedding. Apparently, they were super chill and awesome people. I still hear mum put their songs on while she does work around the house
I always felt like this video was the trailer for a 1980s post-apocalyptic movie that never happened. If you're still looking for more Duran Duran videos, "Union of the Snake" has a similar feel to this one but the song imo is even better - one of the funkiest tracks they've done. "Is There Something I Should Know?" is also a great tune and an interesting video. These guys were so huge that I find it weird that pretty much the only song that gets played on the radio etc. anymore is Hungry Like the Wolf. "The Reflex" was #1 on my local radio station's weekly countdown for what seemed like most of a year. I think it's almost a curse of this band being so eclectic and so different that they really don't fit in even with the other '80s bands you still hear today. I'm really glad you all are enjoying them. P.S. I also love the song "Last Chance on the Stairway" off the Rio album but I'm not sure if there's a video for it.
I've seen them twice in their hey day. Now we kind of laugh, Duran Duran... But I have to hand it to them, they're still performing and writing music today and of course Rock N Roll hall of fame.
You guys are right about calling the video a Mad Max vibe. This Music video was made to completely pay homage to The Road Warrior. Which had everyone blown away in the early 80s! I've heard The Road Warrior was the number one movie Bands would watch on their tour buses in the 80s.
Duran Duran did an awesome cover of White Lines by Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel that’s definitely worth a reaction when you get back to your covers series.
The song was produced by Nile Rodgers, who had worked on the remix of the group’s previous single, The Reflex. The idea for the song came from director Russell Mulcahy, who wanted to make a feature film based on William S. Burroughs' novel Wild Boys (The Wild Boys: A Book of the Dead). He proposed to the band to compose a rock score for the film, similar to how he would ask Queen for Highlander - The Last Immortal in 1986. [6]
Been a fan since I was 10 years old! I have seen them several times. Always a great show! I even have a Duran Duran tattoo! View to A Kill,New Moon On Monday,Union Of The Snake,The Reflex,Planet Earth, The Chauffer,Girls On Film
Fantastic group. You should revisit the popular 80's group, ABC. Check out their song, "When Smokey Sings." Great tribute to Smokey Robinson and the sounds of Motown. The 80s ROCK!! 💯👍🤘🔥
More 80s bands to check out, Go west - call me, we close our eyes; Bodeans - you don’t get much, only love, closer to free; David and david - welcome to the boomtown, swallowed by the cracks, ain’t so easy; Abc - when smokey sings, be near me; Hothouse flowers (irish) - I’m sorry, don’t go, give it up; The alarm (welsh) - rain in the summertime, sold me down the river; World party - ship of fools, all come true, way down now, put the message in the box; The call - let the day begin, the walls came down, I still believe, everywhere I go; Thompson twins - lies, lay your hands on me; The motels - total control; Romeo void - a girl in trouble, never say never; Thomas dolby - I love you goodbye, Europa and the pirate twins, I love you goodbye; Tears for fears - closest thing to heaven; Timbuk 3 - the future’s so bright, life is hard
My favorite band when I was in high school! Best part of the video is John Taylor tied to the roof of the car! Lead singer Simon LeBon almost died during the shooting while on that wnidmill. It stopped while he was underwater.
When this video came out on MTV I was so freaking obsessed with it.. a little creeped out too. (That white robot face thing gave me the heebie jeebies).. And I loved it
This video/music came from their 1st huge world tour that put them on the map. Everyone considered it the Arena Tour but it was the Sing Blue Silver Tour. One of there last stops on the tour was a 3-show stint in Oakland that was filmed as a concert for Cinemax. After this tour ended, they separated and stemmed off into 2 other groups. They only performed together for one event before they regrouped which was Live Aid in 85.
This video/music did not come from "their 1st huge world tour that put them on the map" & it has nothing to do with the tour. First: Duran Duran was "already" internationally on the map since Rio came out in May 1982, a year and half before their world tour started. Duran Duran were popular in the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada & in the USA. What this tour did do was elevate Duran Duran into arguably becoming the biggest band in the world & into a hysteria- unseen since The Beatles came to Unites States in 1964, with their fan base. Second: Duran Duran started their world tour to support their new album, "Seven And The Ragged Tiger," released in November 1983, in Canberra, Australia on November 12, 1983 & ended their tour in San Diego, California on April 17, 1984. Duran Duran's world tour was called the "Sing Blue Silver Tour." Third: "The Wild Boys," has nothing to do whatsoever with their world tour. The most revered music video director at the time, Russell Mulcahy, who directed Duran Duran's first video, Planet Earth, followed by many others such as, Rio, Hungry Like The Wolf, Save A Prayer, Is There Something I Should Know? & The Reflex & etc., had bought the rights to William S. Burroughs' novel, "The Wild Boys: A Book of the Dead" (1971) & planned to make a movie based on this book. Mulchay wanted Duran Duran to do the soundtrack for the movie. So, three months after Duran Duran's world tour ended, the band went into the studio in July 1984 to write & record the title track & anthem for Mulcahy's film called "The Wild Boys." The film did not materialize & Mulchay's vision for the movie was actualized in the "The Wild Boys" music video he directed. Fourth: "Everyone" did not consider the "Sing Blue Silver Tour" the "Arena Tour." No one would have even known to have called this tour the "Arena Tour" & it would not have made any sense to do so. Fifth: Duran Duran released "The Wild Boys" as a single in October 1983 & the song was added as a bonus track to their live album, which was released a month later in November 1984, titled "Arena." The only connection "The Wild Boys" has with the "Sing Blue Silver Tour" is that the song was added as a track to (help sell) their Arena album. That's it. And in March 1985, Duran Duran released a concert film titled "Arena (An Absurd Notion)." Last: You say, "After this tour ended, they separated and stemmed off into 2 other groups. They only performed together for one event before they regrouped which was Live Aid in 85." This is the event that the band "regrouped" for mate in July 1985 after the band "separated and stemmed off into 2 other groups." The band soon became a trio from being a quintet & Live Aid was the last time the five members performed together until 2001.
Roger Taylor the drummer grew up in a house less than a couple of hundred metres from my house. He went to the same school too. Jeff Lynne from ELO, lived just round the corner too.😁
Duran Duran also covered "White Lines" by Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. They were really a great 80's band that had a great come back in the 90's.
Comeback? That's a myth. A Comeback is for someone like Santana who hadn't had a hit song for 15 years with multiple albums that did not sell for many years. Duran Duran had one album Liberty (1990) that was not a commercial success in between hit albums. Big Thing (1988) & The Wedding Album (1993).
Duran Duran is a global band. Why don't you be more specific with your stats because they had Eight top 5 songs between 1981-1985 in the U.K. & in the U.S.A, they had Six top 5 songs between 1983-1985 & Seven top 5 songs between 1983-1986.
Huge group they were on MTV constantly and even did a Bond song. They were a top 5 popular band in their time and a good group as well. Great lead singer
Duran Duran has had hits for days, years, decades. Union Of The Snake, Notorious, View To A Kill, Save A Prayer, The Chauffeur, Girls On Film, UMF, A Perfect Day (a cover), Come Undone. And, their stage performances are stellar. If you ever get the chance to see them live, do.
Christmas, 1984...9 years old...I receive this album...on cassette, mind you...along with a brand new double cassette player. Loved this track most of all and played it over and over and over...
This was an iconic 80s song - thank you for playing this here. Another iconic 80s song from the UK which I am sure you will enjoy is “Life in a Northern Town” by the Dream Academy - haunting and beautiful all in one.
Popular Band, LOL understatement my sister and all her friends had their poster all over the walls they were in love with all of them, I think every girl was like that in the 80's. they are a great band .
I love this song, especially the chorus. And when Andy's guitar kicks in, it's brilliant. The video was directed by an Aussie Russell Mulcahy. Apparently Simon had a bit of trouble with the windmill and water at one stage. He shouldn't go near any water particularly after he fell over board while yachting. I've turned this on up and I'm belting it out again. Cheers, Paul.😁👍📀🎶❤️
I saw Duran Duran in the 80s. Yes, Simon LeBon is an amazing singer... but all of them are great showmen and talented musicians... that was such a good show. Much love from Maine and keep doin what ya do ❤
I remember being gathered around the TV watching MTV when this video had it's world premiere, it was a HUGE deal, Duran Duran was the BIGGEST band in the WORLD - of course this was back when MTV actually still played music
Just to quickly clarify, this incredible lead singer is Simon Le Bon. He's been with them since '81 and still going strong with them today. Andy Wickett, on the other hand, was the singer for DD only briefly in 1979. They went through a couple different singers before hitting the jackpot with Simon. :)
Simon Le Bon has not been with Duran Duran since 1981. Le Bon joined Duran Duran in the summer of 1980. Duran Duran's original singer was Stephen Duffy (also known as Tin Tin) who co-founded the band with John Taylor & soon after had Nick Rhodes join the band. When Duffy left the band, Andy Wickett joined as their vocalist & after he left Jeff Thomas was in the group as their singer until Le Bon became their permanent voice for the band. Side note since Wickett was brought up. When Wickett was in the band, he came up with the melody & the chorus for Girls On Film, & Rio was adapted & altered from Wickett's song called Stevie's Radio that Wickett wrote when he was in the band TV Eye. Girls On Film considerably changed from the version the band wrote with him as well. When Wickett quit the band, he signed a waiver to the rights to the songs he co-wrote with the band & was paid £600, which converted back then to US currency would have been around $1,300. From Business Live (May 2009) & taken from the article "Andy Wickett: The Duran Duran Star Who Never Was." Andy Wickett: “When Simon Le Bon joined the group, their manager used to pay me £10 to give him singing lessons. I’d give him 20 minutes, getting him to sing Girls On Film. He used to try and copy me, because the band liked my style.” Then, of course, the band wanted the rights to his songs. “I went up to see them, and they gave me 600 quid, and I took it. They gave me it in £50 notes, and I had never seen £50 notes in my life. I got a keyboard with the cash, because I was into reggae at that time, and doing a lot of dub reggae, electronic stuff.” Andy now regrets his decision to give away the rights ... and untold riches. “I shouldn’t have done it,” he says. “But my solicitor advised me to do it. “He said ‘Sign it, so that you’ll have a paper trail, and that means you’ve got an interest in those songs.’ I went back to see him afterwards, and he said, ‘Actually, I don’t think you’ve got much chance of getting anything.’”
One of my favorite songs by DD because I love the percussion in this song. As someone noted earlier, Simon LeBon nearly drowned because the windmill stopped when he got to the bottom and his head was under water.
I just saw them for the 44 th time inConcert last weekend . But that’s over the last 40 yrs! .. I’ve seen them 4 times just in the past 2 years . My first DD show I was 15, I went again on my 16 th bday . They’ve never stopped touring and I’ve never stopped going . I am now55.⭐️⭐️🤣⭐️⭐️Durannie 4 Life🤍☑️
I love this song; this is one of their very best! The lead singer is Simon Le Bon. The video was the most expensive music video made at it's time, costing over $1 million. The whole Mad Max sound and feel was intentional as video director Russell Mulcahy had in mind to adapt a book "The Wild Boys: A Book of the Dead" and the video was also intended to demonstrate the concept he had in mind for the movie. It was never made but if it had, Duran Duran would have done the soundtrack similar to what Queen did for the movie Highlander. The song and music video were big hits though. For your next Duran Duran song, I suggest "New Moon on Monday."
I must have seen these guys 50 times since 1983, The albums have been inconsistent but they ALWAYS manage to include THREE hits on each one. They have blessed us with 45 years of great music, Arcadia and Powerstation!
