Notice he never looks at the camera....he's making eye contact with people in the audience! He makes it more personal that way. He's playing the audience!

Can you imagine being just 21 years of age and being able to command such stage presence? Television was still in its infancy, and he'd only made a few appearances thus far, but he understood the medium and learned how to connect with both audiences---in the theater and at home.

When Elvis came on the scene it was like in the movie "The Wizard of Oz" the music world went from black and white to living color.
@ruthhenderson5413
@ruthhenderson5413 Год назад
Or one might say from vanilla white to to chocolate black. The living color was already there, a profound influence for him. Next recommendation: Heartbreak Hotel, the very first 45 RPM I ever bought, with my saved-up, but never put-in-the-church-plate allowance. That was before they had those little printed envelopes to keep tabs on choir kids' donations. I was 12.

That was quite a bit of insecurity. He did not handle criticism well and he was criticized a lot. He was the original evil rock and roll. He was controlled by his managers. Drugs that were constantly fed him from a young age make you paranoid and delusional. He was petrified of The Beatles. And The Rolling Stones. That they were going to make him absolutely. Nothing could ever make Elvis obsolete. But he did not know that. He never did.

He was a phenomenon. Seeing him now , he may not seem so outrageous but back in the 1950’s nobody had ever seen or heard anything like it before. He was just 21 years old and could command the stage like no one else . This show was in front of a live audience….. just a twitch could send the girls wild . There’s never going to be another performer like him . A one off for sure 😍

Definitely a character. He’s got his blue velour shirt on coupled with the gold lame vest that June Juanico gave him for a Christmas present and let’s not forget his eyeliner and makeup. I love his word plays. This is one of my favorite live performances where he does the thing with his eyes at the audience and especially the ending where he does that whole thing with his hands. No words could describe Elvis completely. He was only 21 there, just incredible to think of it now. He had what no one had before or since, an ability to connect to people like a magnet, he drew people to him. I have listened to his music for many decades now, the first music I remember hearing as a small child. Something about him connected with peoples hearts immediately and ever since over all the years. He was a good kind man who gave and gave to the world, I visited Graceland twice years ago and was astonished at his humanitarianism, much of which he kept secret. He started giving 100.000 dollars at Christmas to charities when he was so young and continued on all his life doing so many kind deeds. I am enjoying your discovery of Elvis so much!

I love the 72 version but in the 77 although he really looks ill, that version of How Great Thou Art makes the hair on the back of my neck totally stand up. Just curious which one you want him to review. Thanks much.
@stevedahlberg8680
@stevedahlberg8680 Год назад
@@memphisflashfan1 I agree. At first I just didn't want to watch some of that stuff from that last tour, weeks before he died. But every time I do, I'm blown away that his mastery just kept on increasing right up until he died. He was so affected by health issues at that point and they had him on so many drugs just to keep him going. But whenever he started to sing or started playing the piano to sing along with it, that voice and that mind were just immediately right there. Both performances of How Great Thou Art are good, but I think the 1977 one is unarguably the best one for me. The vocal performance on that just blows me away and the long sustains that the choir is doing near the end gives me goosebumps every time. I think I timed it out once at 35 seconds. But obviously there's got to be some shared rotating breathing in there but even so, they're obviously all there for that last final blast and it's just all out power and sustain until he cuts them off finally.

The difference in his health was astounding in less than 2 years. But his passion with this song never waned...he was amazing.

A very young 18 or 19 year old Elvis. He was such a good man, and would give away Cadillac's, and homes to perfect strangers who were struggling with family situations. There is a documentary out there called something like "Elvis and the Black community", much of which, is narrated by Black people that knew Elvis before he was famous, you should watch. It's an eye opener for both Black and white folks. It tells a wonderful story about the segregation in the south, when Elvis was a boy in Mississippi, and later in Nashville. He and Johnny Cash were friends, before either one had ever made a record. Thanks
