I was just a child when Frank Sinatra's show was on an TV.. my sister was in high school and was one of those who would damn near pass out to every time she saw Elvis. In 1962 the World's fair opened in Seattle. Mom and Dad decided it would be a great time to see a World's Fair, since we lived a little over a hundred miles to the south of Seattle. When we got there we were told that Elvis was filming a movie. Later released as "It Happened at the World's Fair". We were waiting in line to go up the Space Needle. We had been in line and we're the next to get one of the elevators. All of a sudden 2 body guards and Elvis came up and we're about to get on that elevator, when Elvis turned and said "these folks have probably been waiting for some time. There is plenty of room, would you like to ride with us?" To the dismay of his bodyguards, Elvis ushered us into the fairly small elevator. Now my Dad was somewhat old fashioned and not an Elvis fan. Dad believed (or hoped) that rock n roll was just a passing fad. Anyway Elvis was so polite to my Dad and Mom, with the yes sirs and yes Ma'am 's. And even when we got to the top and got off, he continued to talk to us, talking about his time in the Army in Germany, and asking Mom and Dad about our family and our lives, always ending every sentence with a "Sir" or Ma'am. After they left (I was just 13) Dad was quiet for some time. Mom finally asked him why he was so quiet Dad said that even though he was in his 50's, he learned a valuable lesson about "not" judging folks until you get to know them. He said that Elvis must have been raised right, because he was as nice and polite as could be. He didn't have to invite us to share that elevator ride but he did, and he didn't have to take interest in our lives but he did. Dad said that he was sorry that he had pre judged that young man, just because he didn't care for his type of music. But he swore that would not happen again, and although he never did warm up to his music, he did warm up to Elvis as a man. Sorry to bore you at length, but I will never forget the Day that Elvis taught my Dad a valuable lesson and gave us a memory that we will never forget. Good luck to you on your show. I just accidentally stumbled onto it but was very entertained.

What a beautiful story, the things I read about Elvis never cease to amaze me, I was orn in 1963 and I've been an Elvis fan all my life, your story wasn't boring but it did bring a tear to my eye, your dad must have been a hell of a man, he wasn't afraid to admit he was wrong, back in those days it was rare for a man to do that, even these days come to think of it.

You need to see "Elvis Presley and the Black Community" and how he was censored through out the 50's and only filmed from the waist up. He has truly suffered for his art. I'm from the 50's and it was so segregated he actually broke segregation laws. Thanks for your reaction, great job.

I saw a Johnny Cash interview once or read it. He was talking about his start and how he got to go on the road in the 50’s with Elvis. He said that as soon as his gig was up he’d leave the venue. But, not with Elvis. He said “Everybody stayed for Elvis. He was the show closer. You didn’t wanna miss that for 3 reason. 1.) The girls. He had a cult like following of girls. 2.) Him. There just wasn’t anything like him ever before. He was different. A lot of people thought he was some kind of freak or something. 3.) You wanted to stay because you just never knew what might happen. There were riots at shows and he was receiving death threats in every town we played. I saw it first hand. I remember, standing behind the stage curtain behind him where he couldn’t see me and didn’t know I was there. I’d just watch him. I can close my eyes and see it like it was yesterday. He was all alone. Waiting to go on. I don’t know why he was alone or where the band was but he was just standing there and shaking. He was getting himself worked up like they do in church. I felt sorry for him.”. At this point, in the interview, Cash actually chokes up, and tears fill his eyes and he says “Nobody will ever know, if you weren’t there, and I witnessed firsthand, nobody today will ever know the hatred that man had hurled at him by racists and politicians and preachers and cops and you name it. And he handled it so good but I know it wasn’t easy.”. Cash seemed visibly shaken recalling the memory. When I saw that, it changed my outlook or perspective of him a lot.

Yes, they were singing one another’s songs Love Me Tender was Elvis’ song & Witchcraft was Frank’s song. Frank’s youngest daughter, Nancy, who was 18, fell madly in love with Elvis. She said he just made her melt. They were both making movies at the time. Elvis was not allowed to move about too much when being televised. He had had to overcome so much for his love of music, & it cost him dearly, when he was drafted into the army & his most beloved mother had a heart attack & died at the age of 46. Elvis was 22 at the time, & he never got over losing her. His two years serving in tanks in Germany, matured him & curbed the rebel inside of him. It also got him hooked on prescription meds, as the army gave them to the soldiers to keep them awake all night, if they were on duty, as it was very cold in winter in Germany & if they had fallen asleep, they would have got hypothermia. So now, at the age of 24, he is no longer the same young man who was first drafted into the army.

Elvis' voice in the early 60s was smooth like butter. He really had expanded his range and I swear, his sound at that time was the prettiest I've ever heard a man sing. During the army years, he had been working a lot on his vocal technique and breathing and listening to more music like opera, etc. You can definitely hear a change in his voice compared to the 50s recordings. But that's part of what I love about Elvis. His voice changed over time and sang such a variety of songs and styles!

He had to hold back, sweetheart! The POLICE had threatened to put him in jail...FOR REAL, if he moved from his waist down! I am a 65 year old woman that has followed ELVIS from the time that I could watch t.v. until his untimely DEATH! I was and still am a huge ELVIS fan! He was, is, and always will be the KING of ROCK AND ROLL! He began by revolutionizing MUSIC, and then moved on to revolutionizing SOCIETY! The next thing that you should react to is "Jailhouse Rock"! This is before music videos, but "Jailhouse Rock" is a movie; and the title song was named for the movie! It is PHENOMENOL, SPECTACULAR, GORGEOUS, and a MASTERPIECE for the era it came from! The dancing alone was absolutely unreal, but when you hear ELVIS open his mouth to sing it, you just have to get up and MOVE!!! This song was NEW, SOOOO DIFFERENT, and SUPER COOL!!! My mum hates you've lost that loving feeling (all the boys In school sung it to the girls like they were maverick in top gun) but still appreciates it vocally. She's very pretty so got sung too alot haha.

It's Amazing when you realize that Elvis' career was only about 21 years long. I believe it was from 1956 to 1977. And almost 50 years after his death he is still capturing fans. I don't think any other performer has had such an impact in such a short time. He once asked one of his associates "Do you think they will remember me when I'm gone." Hard to believe he thought he would be forgotten after all he accomplished.

In the middle of Elvis singing career he was drafted in the Army. Apon coming back, he was on the Frank Sintra Show were Frank sang Elvis's song "Love Me Tender" and Elvis sang "Witchcraft" one of the many songs Frank sang. Also, in this clip is comedian Joey Bishop. Frank, Joey along with singers Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Actor Peter Lawford made up a group called "The Rat Pack".

Elvis was paid $125,000 for 11 minutes of air time for this show. Enormous amount of money for 1960. He earned more than Sinatra, whose show it was. Elvis had gotten such enormous ratings on Ed Sullivan's show that Sinatra said he wanted him on his. Got the biggest rating his TV show ever had the entire season. On Ed Sullivan show, they pulled in 82.5% of the viewing audience in the entire country. Hard to imagine that level of stardom already. Also, BTW, Sinatra demanded that Elvis wear a Tux.

Yes, yes, yes... if you ever stumble on a live recording of a Frank Sinatra concert from 10 years earlier than this video, it's often hard to hear much over the continuously screaming younger ladies, very much like the screams on this recording but nearly continuous... pre-Elvis, pre-Beatles... ol' Blue Eyes had that sort of rabid fandom following as well!

Once again love your reaction!!!!! You make me laugh and smile. Yeah, Elvis had to be reserved in his moves because of television and the audience these programs reached. They would often do close ups because they were afraid of his "loose legs & hips". Hahaha! He was know as "Elvis the Pelvis". One note, in the second song he sings, Stuck on You, he is singing the lyrics - Hide in the kitchen, hide in the hall, Ain't gonna do you no good at all. Cause once I catch ya, and the kissin' starts a team of wild horses couldn't tear us apart. You can see he his fully aware of this presence and power he holds. Pure raw talent! Back in the 1990's when I was at the height of my entertainment career I met several guys who actually served with Elvis in the Army & they all had wonderful things to say about him. Like all other veterans they greatly admired how Elvis despite being a mega Star by 1958 actually served alongside all the other soldiers WITHOUT the special treatment & status that celebrities would demand & get. No other superstar would ever do that again in today's elite culture. I had a very close romantic involvement with 1 of Elvis' 1970's GFs & was close to many of Elvis' close friends from high school til his death, family members, & members of his band. As a result of my intimate knowledge & experiences I know Elvis for the actual man he was which was so much deeper than the surface caricature that many people now see him as. There are just so many stories from his high school classmates, his GFs, his close friends that make U really appreciate the actual man he was beyond the image. He was born & raised very poor & despite being the biggest Superstar of all time always had a humbleness to him. It's often true that the Stars that shine brightest burn out the soonest.

Britt, I had sent you this request and thank you so much for doing it! I love your channel. Frank’s variety show was a big deal and they were the first to sign Elvis to an appearance after he was discharged from the army. The contract did say he had to wear a tuxedo and to tone it down a little. I think Elvis really wanted to bust loose but couldn’t. This is a great time capsule and Elvis was so FINE!

Elvis held back because it was made clear to him that he had to. Sinatra had a very sensitive ego, and was threatened by Elvis. The old establishment including Sinatra was knocked on their behinds by this supremely talented and exciting new guy. Elvis was paid a fortune to be on the show because the demand for him after the army was overwhelming. Elvis was stunning to look at, moved like a jaguar, could sing all genres beautifully and drive women insane, and Sinatra knew it.

Love Me Tender is one Elvis’ iconic songs. Witchcraft is Sinatra’s song. Both songs are much slower and romantic originally, and are fast paced in this show for fun. Frank turns the slow ballad it to a Sinatra style jazz number and Elvis makes the romantic Witchcraft like a sexy Elvis song.

Dont know for sure if it was going on yet, at the time this show was filmed, but I like to think it was. Elvis seemed to always be able to get the last laugh on people, who trash talked him early on in his career. Back when he first started getting national exposure. Frank was one of the people, who said some very negative things about Elvis, without even knowing him. Anyway, Elvis was such a nice and respectful guy, who never said anything bad about anybody in the media. When they did it to him, he always appeared to just take it in stride, and didnt let it bother him. Once Frank realized how big Elvis was on TV, he had to bring him onto his show. Like everyone else who met Elvis in person, and saw how outwardly respectful, kind and humble he was, people like Frank, changed their opinions about him. They began having friendly, respectful business relationships with him. They loved the talented southern boy, from here in Memphis, TN. What Frank didnt realize was, that despite Elvis's outward, Aww Shuxx, Yes Sir, No Sir respectful nature, Elvis was an undercover Savage 😆, who stored every terrible thing ever said about him, away in his mind. What did Elvis do as retribution for Frank? Well, in true Thug Life fashion, Elvis went to Frank's fiance, charmed her, and began having "Booty Call's" with her, right under Frank's nose! 😂 Frank nearly caught them in the act a time or two. I'm not condoning adultery, or sex outside of marriage, but what Elvis did, was SAVAGE!😂 That is how you get even, when you are Elvis Presley! Lol. Then, years later, Elvis ran across a brand new car, that he really liked, at a dealership. I want to say it was the first black Stutz he bought. Those cars, had a really long wait period, between ordering one, and getting it. Because they were custom built. Anyway, a salesman came out to ask if he could help Elvis with anything. Elvis said yeah, I want this car. The salesman said, I'm sorry, but this car was custom ordered by Frank Sinatra. It just came in, and Frank hasnt picked it up yet. Elvis insisted that he was buying this car. So whether he charmed the salesman, or he just paid them more than Frank was going to be paying for it, I dont know. What I do know is, Frank never got that car. 😂 Elvis swiped it right out from under him. Haha! Elvis was a master, when it came to getting revenge! Not only did he take Frank's fiancee, he also took Frank's brand new, super rare, customized car. What makes it the best revenge, is that while he had that little affair with her, everybody around knew that she and Elvis were getting it on. Well, everybody that is, except for Frank! Elvis made him look like a fool. You just didnt mess with Elvis, because payback was coming! I think this is the longest comment Ive ever made. Hahaha

Great video to react to. After the army his manager wanted a different image for him after his “rebel years” of the 50’s. Unfortunately it lead to a lot of bad movies and music in the 60’s until the comeback special. The second of his solo songs is one of my most requested to do in my shows. Love it. Great job

Elvis could sing many genres. The first song was more of a 50’s love ballad. Elvis sang ballads with such gentle tones, it made hearts melt. To answer your question, Elvis was 6 ft tall. My dad is 82 and my mom 76. Taiwanese. I grew up in NYC, listening to Pac and Biggie and the rest. They always told me, without any hesitation, that Elvis was the greatest male singer of all time, and I thought they were just being corny old heads. Then I started watching these older clips of Elvis singing and realized they were 100% right. That man had the voice of a god. And he made it look so easy.

And wow, I don't have the time to read through more than 500 comments, but in case it hasn't been mentioned... in those days, Elvis' moves were censured and his earlier TV performances (Before the Army), he was only allowed to be filmed from the waist up. You'll even notice in this performance sometimes the camera suddenly moved to his face even though the audience was screaming about... well, something. That, and the fact that Elvis was on the Sinatra show AND wearing a tuxedo, a far cry from his usual stage attire, probably all contributed to his somewhat "controlled" if you will, performance.

So just to give you some info: "Fame And Fortune" is listed under two genres of music styles: Rock 'n' Roll & Pop. I know. I thought for sure it was Doo- Wop, too. But apparently it's not. Doo- Wop itself is a subgenre of R&B, which actually got started in latter half of the 1930's. It all started with a loop chord progression that was used in such songs like Rogers and Hart's 1934 hit "Blue Moon" and Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser's 1938 "Heart And Soul" (note: these are the names of the songwriters, not the recording artists). So Doo- Wop composers then took that loop chord progression and varied it slightly but significantly differently that would go on to be very influential and later be known as the "50's progression". One of the best selling worldwide hits to come out of the early Doo- Wop era is "If I Didn't Care" 1938 recording by The Ink Spots & written by Jack Lawrence (born Jacob Louis Schwartz who was a closeted gay man and son of Russian Jewish immigrants; he and his partner would officially come out as a couple in a New York Times interview in 1968 after having made a sizable charitable donation to the Israel Museum in Jersulem. Jack Lawrence was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975.) The Ink Spots were an African- American singing group. The Ink Spots were influential in propelling the early popularity of Doo- Wop. The Ink Spots were also one of Elvis's favorite singing groups growing up. Doo- Wop is also noted to have emerged from the East Coast inner- city African- American communities back in the late 1930's/ 1940's. Doo- Woo reached its pinnacle of popularity worldwide in the 1950's and early 1960's. This is a VERY over- simplified and chopped down bit of info on Doo- Wop. Another significant note of classic Doo- Wop songs, I forgot to add, is that they are all about love and they all have a catchy vocal harmonization featured as the back up vocals as well as part of the chorus. I grew up in a house with several at my disposal. But I will say that I do not consider the Bible as the Word of God. To explain all of the reasons why would be too time consuming. Great reaction as always! No Internet back in 1960! Frank Sinatra hosted a welcome-back show for Elvis who had just returned from the Army. The aspect ratio is a it off in this video so that's why he looks so tall. He was actually 6. It just so happens that a lot of people in the entertainment industry were (and continue to be) short. My 5'6" self can appreciate this. 😃Elvis's voice matured during his two years in the Army. He admired Italian-American crooners like Mario Lanza, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and during his two year stint he worked with friend Charlie Hodge (who you later see playing acoustic guitar and singing harmony in Elvis's bands). Frank Sinatra was also a big star at this time - but he appealed to an older set of fans. The two of them possess so much swagger. Elvis also developed smoother moves having commenced his study of Karate while in the Army. Imagine how much life Elvis had already experienced since his first appearance on Ed Sullivan and Milton Berle back in 1956. He became an national and international star; his mother died; he was drafted and served in tour in the Army; he met a very young Priscilla. And all during this time, he worried he'd come back and people would have forgotten him. Nope.

Oh that's a shame, whoever made the video cut it off early. They do a little reprise of that harmony together right after this and it's so cool, and there is another little bit of kind of talking mid singing between them. Elvis was doing Frank's hit witchcraft, while Frank was doing Elvis's hit Love Me Tender. Which if you haven't seen the Elvis live in Vegas version of him doing Love Me Tender where he goes around and kisses all the women, it really is a sight to behold. Another great thing about this performance is that they were both quite nervous to do it, and you can kind of see that just melt away by the end of their duet together. I just think that is so cool. Frank had initially said some pretty derogatory things about Elvis, especially regarding his dance moves and his attitude, but after a while as they saw his popularity just continuing to explode and how much money shows like Ed Sullivan were making off of him, Frank changed his mind. And then Elvis met his daughter Nancy and they were good friends even though the rumors about them having a thing together weren't true. Because Frank was nervous leading up to this performance, he sent Elvis a really nice gift, although I can't remember now what it was. And to me you can kind of see how there is at tension when they start and then by the end, especially that last little bit that got cut off, it just seems like they really resonated and by all accounts, they liked each other a lot going forward from this point. It was an iconic moment because Frank represented the older generation heartthrob and Elvis was the phenomenally popular newer generation heartthrob.
