One point that is not well known is that Elvis never had a stage monitor to hear his vocals until around 1972. Says a lot about his talent.

I remember watching this as a teenager with my mom. When he came out in that black outfit we almost fainted because he looked just so awesome. Elvis was back performing live and he surpassed all the Beattles stuff we had been hearing. It was such a mass musical switch up from the other rock groups of the moment. The 60's had so many groups and you had so much to choose from that Elvis in this moment of time made us all remember how much we loved him and rock and roll. He had also married his long time girlfriend Priscilla the year before. It was a great time in his life which you can feel.

Elvis being Elvis, messing with the crowd. He had been on a hiatus, making movies and it was his first time back performing live on stage for 8 years. Heartbreak Hotel was Elvis's first no.1 back in the 50s. Great reaction👍

Well, not exactly. He did two live shows in Feb. and March of 1961. The first one was held at Graceland with a lot of guests at 4:23 Feb. 24. The show lasted 49 minutes. And of course in March he entertained folks in Hawaii for the Pearl Harbor concert the next month.

It’s simple why it was the comeback. He blew up in the 50s, than Hollywood wanted him as the new James Dean so he started movies, got drafted for 2 years and when he got back in 1960 from the army he did 31 films straight as a major Hollywood actor. In that time the music scene overtook him and the safe movie soundtracks he got jammed in and he finally came back home in the 68 comeback which is the most iconic music concert ever. The king was back. He was so mismanaged but you saw him raw and real in this show. The sit down show was based on an impromptu jamming session as he did in his dressing room.

I enjoyed watching Elvis. I think as he got older his voice got better. I know Elvis has helped me get through 2020 and now 2021. The pandemic and being isolated from people. It must of been hard for Elvis, not having freedom, to come and go as he pleased. I am a fan of Elvis for life. Long live Elvis!!

Long story short, he pretty much took over the World in the mid/late 1950's. He got drafted into the Army and was there for a number of years. When he got out, he did a ton of movies in the mid 1960, but didn't do his concert tours. So this TV special in 1968 is him coming back to the music scene. It was a HUGE success.

This was Elvis returning to live performances after an 8 year absence due to his movie contract from the 60’s. He was still popular then but maybe not as he was a few years back, so this brought him back to that level of popularity and returning to touring.

He went into the army for 2 years then was in a contract to make movies so this was the first time performing in a concert for a live audience. He was really nervous and at the last minute he almost didn't go on because he didn't know how people would react. They told him just be himself.

It was his first live performance since 1961. Between 1960 and this TV Special he made movies. The last movie he did was in 1969. He made a few very good movies and a few ........not so good. After the movie contract he wanted to do what he did best.......music! This TV Special was later called the '68 Comeback Special. And it was absolutly awesome. The Rolling Stone later wrote it was one of the most important comebacks ever and devinitley the best! And you are right, Elvis in black leather is absolutly cool. And the heartbeat of us ladies goes faster when we see him in this outfit! 💓💗

It was originally called “Singer Presents the NBC Elvis Special” it was the first time any one had a primetime special with no guests. Up until 15 minutes before he walked out in that stage in the black leather suit, he almost walked away from it. He was scared how he would be accepted. It was the highest rated show for 1968. And later came to be known as his comeback. It encourages him to sign for the 69 Vegas engagement. They wanted him to open the showroom, but he refused and wanted to be second. He knew they would have issues with sound and stage and wanted them resolved before he opened his show. Barbra Streisand opened the showroom with sound glitches. Smart Man he was. The rest is history.

Yes, you are right. Elvis was always fresh, improvising and making every performance special, while having fun. Very tuned into his audience. I lived through that era; I've watched several of your reactions, and I gotta say you really get how great this man was as an artist, how revolutionary he was. Another thing about Elvis that a lot of people don't fully appreciate: his vocal RANGE. It was really big and his tone was rich, strong and attractive all the way through that range, from bottom to top. To this day vocal coaches marvel at that.

And you're right about Elvis "emprovising". This show was regressed, because it had to be....but in the 70's when Elvis was performing, he of course had a set list, sometimes he would get "bored" with it. The band might start a song they had planned, or about to start a planned song, and Elvis would call out a completely different song title, and they'd just do it. Sometimes they would be "obscure" songs that were on an album, but he'd never done live. That's the way he did things.

Elvis came back from doing movies for the biggest part of the 1960s, sometimes three per year. They started out alright, before he went into the army in 1958, but after that, their quality soon declined. Elvis himself would refer to them as "Travelogues". His dream had been to become a serious actor, but his manager, the money greedy "Colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andries van Kuijk), wanted him to do fluff movies with mostly horrible soundtrack albums that would still sell, because it was Elvis, to rake in more money. So, Elvis had not been live on stage for several years and yearned to get back to doing concerts as soon as the movie contracts were over. The 1968 comeback special was the first step in this, although he made his last movie in 1969. But then he was free to do concerts and tours again. And you're right about no 2 Elvis shows being the same, even if they had the same playlist. He always said he and his band/orchestra had to pretend it was the first time they performed the show, because for the people in the audience, it WOULD be the first time viewing it.

My more sophisticated (LOL!) lyrics to the song: Well since my beloved forsook me, I've found a new residence. It terminates on Lonely Street. It's Heartbreak Hotel. It's there that I'll be lonely darling. Well, I'll be forlorn. I'll be so disconsolate, I could die. Despite the crowded conditions, you'll certainly find a room in which broken-hearted lovers can cry away their gloom. They'll be so lonely darling. They'll be forlorn. They'll be so disconsolate they could die. At present the bellhop's tears are flowing. The desk clerk's attired in black. They've resided so long on Lonely Street that they'll never, never look back. Well now, if your beloved forsakes you. And you have a woeful tale to tell -- just meander down Lonely Street to Heartbreak Hotel. ________________________________________ * The ending of 'beloved' should have the Old English pronunciation of 'id.'

2 years ago they had an Anniversary Special on NBC mixing him singing along with current people. Can you imagine 50 years is celebrated because of a TV special in 68. That’s how much it actually grew after his death instead of forgetting about it. His one worry in life was that he wondered if people would forget him when he died. Little did he know. I hope he’s looking down with that confidence he sometimes lacked and is smiling.

Wiki: In 1968, following a seven-year break from live performances, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed television comeback special Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. As for the people complaining about singing Elvis the same songs each show, they asked people coming to one of his concerts which songs they wanted to hear, they all asked for the same old songs. As Ricky Nelson sang: "You can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself." And that's what Elvis did: Enjoying himself, and share his joy with his band, friends and fans.

In case you did not know, brother, Elvis is considered the greatest Rock N Roll artist of all time. He had a magnetism and charisma which could physically be felt by those in the room he had just entered. Without a doubt, he was gifted by God to be what he was, and he was the only one in history. Elvis opened the door to every rock and roll act to follow, including the Beatles, the greatest rock band in history. He also opened the door for black artists, because white radio stations said his music was "N" music! and they refused to play it. It was Ed Sullivan that convinced America that Elvis was a decent young man and was not vile and vulgar. Take a listen to what James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr, and Chuck Berry said about Elvis. Chuck Berry said that Elvis was the greatest who has ever been, or ever would be. Ask ANY black artist of his day and they will tell you, Elvis opened up the door for black music to be played on white radio, and of course black radio LOVED Elvis. Elvis had 3 back up girl singers who were black. Listen to what they said about Elvis. EVERYBODY loved Elvis, and many said he was the most "beautiful" man God ever created, (talking about his looks), and he was!

Actually I like the way he sings his older songs in this special. His voice was similar but deeper so he sounded like a lion instead of a panther. Elvis did several shows for this with different audiences to get the best choices for the tv special. He does better with this song from a different take. He was scared being in front of people after so long. His hand shook. I never really cared for the original single but on tv he roared and rocked it out.

As we know, he became famous late 50's so in the 60's for almost a decade he mostly made movies in Hollywood. During his time away from music n performing, unknown lesser known groups like the Beatles were taking over America w regards to pop music so he was pressed to make a come back ie the TV show was his way of returning to the scene.

There are several great numbers from this part of the show where he was brought together with his old band for several songs and they didn't even have much of a chance to rehearse if any and so really it's just like old friends that had played so many shows and songs together for so long but hadn't played together in a while just having a porch Jam type thing. And then the audience gets to be real close cuz it's in the round. Trying to get to you is another one that pops up a lot from this exact same set. But really every one of them is great and there are all moments of just his personality and interacting with this band members and audience and so forth. You can't go wrong with black suit Elvis you can't go wrong with evil Elvis I meant, laugh. The Only Exception being that he did do a version of the Martin Luther King tribute if I can dream, in the black suit but it's the show finale where he is in the white suit with the red tie against the red background that is so iconic. Probably his best performance ever in my view although he had so many.

What's he coming back from? Well...it's more like what was he coming back TO? The answer is live performances. All throughout the 60's, Elvis was in Hollywood making movies. All but a few of his movies had a ton of songs thrown into them. It's what Elvis called "fluff material". His movies were pretty good and the man could act, he just didn't like that his manager "Colonel" Tom Parker insisted that Elvis sing in his movies. In 1968, Elvis was just about to be out of the movie contracts. He had three more to make...."The Trouble with Girls", "Change of Habit", and "CHARRO!" all three really showcased his acting chops. He had others where he really got to act too. The three i mentioned were his final 3 movies he was obligated to make. Change of Habit was a dramatic acting roll for him, while The Trouble With Girls (And How to Get into It) was a comedic roll. In CHARRO!, Elvis grew a beard and played a really bad ass cowboy...an outlaw gone straight. CHARRO! featured no music within the movie itself....the only song performed in that was the title song, CHARRO!, played over the opening titles. and yes, it was performed my Elvis. Within the movie itself though, no singing, just pure dramatic acting. So Elvis, knowing he was about to free of making movies, wanted to show the public he was a lot more of an entertainer than they'd been seeing in his films (though most of them weren't bad). He was approached about doing a "Comeback Special". It's called the '68 Comeback Special today.....then, it was titled "Singer Presents Elvis". Singer Sewing Machines was the spinsor of the show. If Elvis' manager Colonel Tom Parker had his way, it would have been a Christmas Special with entirely Christmas music. Elvis hated that idea. He loved Christmas and Christmas music, but he hated the idea of having his first live appearance in front of an audience in years be all Christmas music, especially since it was taped in June of 1968. It was taped in June of '68, and aired on December 4th of '68. Elvis and the show director compromised with Colonel Parker and opted to include one, "possibally 2" Christmas songs in the show since it was airing in December. He was coming back to his audience if you will. After the three final movies, all made and released in 1969, Elvis opened in Vegas to a live crowed and from then on, he sold out EVERY concert up to and including his very last concert tour in June of '77.

Elvis was tied up in Hollywood doing 31 movies under those contracts that Colonel Parker had him doing two and three movies a year which was a nightmare for him he didn’t like the movie didn’t want the movie didn’t they weren’t giving them the parts that he wanted that’s when he put his foot down when his contract is up that’s when he said to the kernel iPad it I’m going back to live concerts and thank God he did nobody could beat Elvis nobody he just had that charisma to see him in person I’m 75 to see him in person at timesThree times in concert and one time I met him through the owner of Caesar’s Palace because I was friends with the owner at Caesars Palace but he was just one in 1 million that’s all I can tell you but you never forgot his concerts I could tell you that Liz the queen

He was away in Hollywood making 31 movies so he wasn't performing live. This was supposed to be a Christmas special but he changed it to what he wanted to sing. The reason they call it comeback is because he hadn't performed in front of a live audience in 10 years.

How can you say this is the best Elvis performance you ever seen when it's obvious Elvis is just fooling around and isn't even trying? I think it's obvious that the person or persons who told you to react to Heartbreak Hotel meant they wanted you to react to the original and not to this one. You need to start from the beginning when Elvis first started back in the 50's if you really want to know why Elvis became the King of Rock n Roll. You need to listen to songs from the 50's like the original Heartbreak Hotel & Money Honey (1956 Dorsey Bros TV Show), All Shook Up & Don't Be Cruel (Ed Sullivan Show (1956 or 57), Teddy Bear, Got A Little Livin To Do, & Mean Woman Blues (1957 from the movie Loving You), TROUBLE (from the movie King Creole)......start from there then work your way up. These are all actual performances. It's not exciting when you listen to studio songs like "Wash My Hands In Muddy Water." You never should have reacted to that one.

I can say this is the best performance that I’ve seen because I know what I like and this was that. The word best is subjective if you aren’t talking statistical facts. What you might think is the best version of something I might not agree with and vice versa. Your version of the best might be some serious deep performance but for me it’s something more personable

I feel you are being too serious,😊 this video was requested by someone and it shows Elvis's charismatic personality. Elvis was just getting relaxed and having some fun. Just because it wasn't a perfectly sung version of the song doesn't mean it wasn't a good performance. I agree, his 50s performances were some of his greatest, but some prefer 68, and some love his 70s era, also his rehearsals were equally brilliant. I'm sure @old Man BEST will react to a mix and will like what he likes. I also hope he does react to some studio songs because a lot of Elvis's best songs do not have video performances. I really like "Wash My Hands In Muddy Water", and "Long Black Limousine", and both reactions were great!😜✌️

You stopped the video too soon. At the end Elvis says: "man this is the worst job i've ever done!" 😀😂 Elvis is so cool. Anything he does or says sounds okay and is acceptable.

He was extremely nervous when he reached the stage here. He came off as a cool guy, but he was feeling insecure because he had been away with the movies for so long. It didn't take him long to get comfortable though. No slam on you, but if you delve into Elvis for at least another month, you will change your mind about this being one of his best performances.
