Annie is a woman and hers is the only voice you hear on the song. Both the low and high parts. She just has a somewhat androgynous look. She also has one of the most beautiful and powerful voices of her generation.

This video was actually very controversial when the song was released because she was rocking the short hair and suit, and Annie was even accused of being a man in drag.

At the time the video came out, people were thrown by her androgynous look, so you’re not the first to be confused by this video! Once you’ve heard some more of their music, you’ll have an easier time recognizing Annie’s voice.

It would only be disrespectful if you knew she was a woman and insisted on calling her a man. It was obvious you weren’t doing that so no apology needed for a genuine mistake. All the vocals were Annie she has such a wide vocal range both in styles and octaves. Check out other stuff by them they’re amazing as is her solo work ❤

Annie is a contralto voice which is somewhat rare. Between how low she can sing in her chest voice and her androgynous look in this video your mistake is understandable. Give Here Comes The Rain Again. Her vocals are just hauntingly beautiful

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE GREAT ANNIE LENNOX!!!!!!!!..SHON, ANNIE IS SINGING THE ENTIRE SONG!!!!!!!..EVEN THE BACKGROUND YOU LIKE SO MUCH....FYI:The MCS Drum Computer provided drum sounds, and also triggered sequences on a Roland SH-101 synthesizer, used for the synth bass line. To fill out the complement of instruments, Lennox played a borrowed Oberheim OB-X for sustained string sounds.

Annie Lennox has a very powerful voice. The Eurythmics had a lot of great hits in the 80's-90's such as "Who's That Girl?", "Right By Your Side", "Here Comes The Rain Again", "Would I Lie To You?", "It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)", "Love Is A Stranger", "Missionary Man" etc. Annie has had a great solo career too with many hits.

When this song came out, with the video, it gave me the courage to get a really short haircut. Luckily, it looked good on me, and haven't had long hair in almost 40 years. Her voice gives me chills. It's also fun to try singing the harmony parts in the chorus. Thanks for the reaction! Edit: It's most, if not all, synth. Even drums had drum machines back then. Anything that sounds like strings or horns, it's most probably a synth (or several).

Eurythmics is an AMAZING rabbit hole to go down. SO many good ones - my own favorites are two that show off two very different vocal styles for Annie Lennox …… “I Need A Man” and “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)” & Stevie Wonder does harmonica on the 2nd one. I also recommend some of their solo works. For Annie, “Walking on Broken Glass” (with John Malkovich in the video) and “Why” ….. for Dave, check out his work with Tom Petty on “Don’t Come Around Here No More” (and the video is mind-blowing!) and with Candy Dulfer on “Lily Was Here” (instrumental, she’s a saxophonist).

Check out other early 80s hits of theirs which broke the band internationally: “Who’s That Girl” and “Here Comes the Rain (Again)”. Bear in mind these videos were shot in the very early days of music videos, so to a certain extent people had low budgets, no computer effects and frankly, they didnt know what they were doing, but it all made the whole thing original. The instrument was a synth, probably a Yamaha DX7 as everyone was using that in the early/mid 80s.

Hi, Shon! Excellent reaction. :) I'm pretty sure it was an Oberheim OB-X (a classic analog synthesizer, for anyone wondering) playing the cello line, too. It was an extraordinarily popular synth when it came out, between 1980-193. It was used live and on recordings by artists as popular as Prince and Madonna and across tons of genres during those early years. Synthpop (OMD, Japan, Eurythmics, Ultravox), Soft Rock (Olivia Newton-John, Ambrosia, Kim Carnes), Funk (Kool & the Gang, Rick James, Chaka Khan), Art Rock (Roxy Music, Queen), New Age (Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre), Progressive Rock (Rus, Styxh), SmoothJazz (David Sanborn, Shakatak, Dave Grusin, Yellowjackets), Industrial Music (Killing Joke, Liaisons Dangereuses), and even John Lennon on his final album with Yoko Ono before he was assissinated in late 1980. The reason you haven't heard it very much is because even though the OB-X is considered one of the all-time classic analog synthesizers (easily in the Top20 for most players), digital synthesizers largely replaced analog synthesizers by 1983. Digital synthesizers were better at certain things, one of which was replicating "real" sounds far better than analog synths. So, almost overnight, the spacey, robot-like, bleepy, bloopy, buzzy sounds of synthesizers took a backseat to digitally recreated bells, mallets, pianos, electric pianos, organs, strings, brass, electric bass, guitars (which sounded terrible), and all sorts of then-new textures previously out of reach. Analog synths came back in style after a while, as did the spacey and robotic sounds they were responsible for. Nowadays an OB-X would probably cost you over $5 thousand American dollars. But if you are an electronic musician, there are actually very good (and FREE) VST versions of the OB-X (and other analog synths, Oberheims, and digital synths) available online for anyone. . And as everyone has already pointed out, Annie is a woman. you definitely aren't the first person to make the mistake. She's not trans or in drag, but she's definitely fucking with the perception of her gender. It was famously called gender-bending at the time and the clinical term is androgyny. It's not gender identity or anything like that. It's just a way of performing or presenting oneself with no clear gender or with questions about the person's gender. It goes back centuries, if not longer. Many artists in different movements and genres (Jazz, 50s Rock'n'Roll, 70s UK Glam, Funk, Disco, Synthpop, Goth, Industrial, Hair Metal, Indie, Grunge, Britpop, Electronic music, Emo) play with gender in their presentation and sometimes their lyrics. Annie Lennox was one of many artists in the early-to-mid-80s who were famous for "gender bending" (including Boy George, Prince, Grace Jones, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Joan Jett), but the tradition in Pop/Rock is probably most cleanly attributed to Little Richard who performed in full makeup, wigs, false eyelashes and sometimes even women's clothes, early-on in the mid-1950s - 70 years ago!! Even elvis wore eyeliner. Trends changed so fast in the 1960s that almost all young people seemed androgynous to older generations at the time. By the 1970s, most young people had long hair, whether it was worn down to their butts or as a natural/afro. The artists of the 1960s and 70s blurred gender lines in ways that are harder to see in retrospect, but were definitely written and spoken about extensively at the time and afterwards. The early 1970s is when it went crazy, though. Especially, in the UK, where Glam Rock became the big teen sensation. UK Glam lasted form about 1970-75. It helped propel artists like Elton John, Queen, Sparks, Roxy Music, and David Bowie to much wider stardom, even though all of those artists evolved into other genres and presentations over the years. Other artist pretty much peaked during Glam, like T. Rex, Slade, Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Gary Glitter, Wizzard, Rubettes, Mott the Hoople and tons of others who sneaked in a hit or twelve before disappearing into the ether. These acts were famous for dressing in platform heels, makeup, satins, feathers, and gold lame, then rocking out. They would sometimes wear elaborate costumes. Some had signature looks (the band Sailor dressed as sailors, naturally, LOL). In the 1980s, this movement was referenced by the New Romantics of the UK music scene Eurythmics was a part of, but also the US Hair Metal explosion of the decade. Glam and its androgyny was also the touchstone of Goth Music (The Cure, Love & Rockets, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Sisters of Mercy). Anyway, dipping your toe into the music of the last 60+ years for this channel, someone like Annie Lennox might appear to be a true outlier. But really, she's part of a long-running tradition in popular music. She *is* one of the most famously androgynous artists in the canon, though. Largely because of this video. Also, because most androgynes are/were men taking on feminine characteristics, like with Prince or early David Bowie. Being such a beautiful woman with such strikingly masculine appearance made her easy camera fodder. Once you see more of the Eurythmics videos (in the US alone, they had ten Top40 hits in the 80s) and Annie's solo hits (she had several bangers in the early-to-mid-90s) you'll see how androgyny was just one of the ways she uses gender to communicate and only one of many costumes.

The Redhead is Annie. She is singing all of the parts. Dave is the instrumentalist.

That is Annie doing the singing on this whole song. She has her different looks. Sometimes androgynous and others she’s stunningly feminine. No matter how she looks at any time, she has a stellar voice.

The only person singing is Annie Lennox. She’s the red head in the suit, as well as the woman throughout the video. Dave is the man with the beard who plays the instruments. The instruments are a cello & a synthesizer. Dave is the guy with the beard playing the cello. Cello is an amazing instrument. My favorite. If you listen to Eurythmics “Here Comes the Rain Again”, there’s much more cello in that one.

Here's a recommendation on Annie Lennox, but ONLY if you've watched the Lord of the Rings (extended versions): at the very end of the last movie, as you're sitting in your seat with your mind swirling and your heart wide open, trying to grapple with what you've just watched, this unearthly song comes on. It's called "Into the West". It was written and performed by Annie Lennox...and it won the Oscar for Best Original Song that year. It's a very slow song, and it's perfectly placed - like a lifeline to hold onto for a few minutes while you transition between worlds. And: What a set of pipes!! BTW, if you haven't watched the LOR films, they may be the best cinema I've ever seen. Not asking you to react to them; just treat yourself.

Isuggest Walking on Broken Glass. Just Annie Lennox. One of the few videos she is not androgynous. Everyone dressed in British Regency/Victorian outfits. Plus you get John Malkocich and Hugh Laurie acting in the video

Not sure, but I think The Eurythmics used a Roland and a Fairlight, the OG of the synthesizer.

omg! i never heard anyone call annie lennox he/his before! at the beginning you read the names of the two members then called annie dave and assumed annie only did the backing vocals cause what it was a higher range? did you think she was a femine looking crossdresser? if annie was dave that would make dave annie?😂 this is the synth pop of the early 80's.synth was new and creative. women did go for the androgynous look then it was a fashion style. you'll see her style change. i think the instrament is the one you saw on the video.a chello a member of the string family and smaller than a double base. this was recorded when lots of real instraments were used and recorded live in the studio and then mixed into the song rather than now when they don't use as many and just get a sample off a recording from the pc. she has a wonderful voice please do more. there must be an angel playing with my heart thorn in my side here comes the rain again who's that girl missionary man also annie went solo why? walking on broken glass no more i love you's love song for a vampire

The sound you worried about is a synth, yes, imitating a string section. You're so humble that you worth a song by Annie 😉 Annie Lennox as a solo artist has incredible song according to her incredible voice: - Why? - No More "I Love You's" - Walking On Broken Glass - Little Bird - Sing She owns a beautiful and supportive soul too: Nelson Mandela Foundation, Treatment Action Campaign (HIV victims), women rights and more.
