Amanda, my life has been one trauma after another, and while I flirted with addiction, I didn't actually fall to it. Mainly because both of my parents were addicts, and it cost my father his life when I was still a baby. My mother left me with his mother to raise, and I was 4 years old the last time I saw her and didn't have a clue who she was. That, according to my grandmother (who blamed my father's death on my mother). I do still get bouts of depression, but I've learned how to cope with them in a way that works for me. Though it's not something I can recommend to anyone else. Plus, my wife is a good support system. She knows that sometimes, I just need "tough love" because it's how we both grew up. But also, she knows when to simply "leave me alone" and sort it out myself. But I do enjoy your reactions to music that I've enjoyed since their release.
My favorite line in this song was: "I get the joy of rediscovering you". I don't know if you remember, and for me it's ok if you don't, I am not really active here, but I lost my wife just over two years ago and songs like this remind me of her, Kerri Fleming (Corthell). I think you would really love "When you Love a Woman" by Journey. It's a song recorded around 1996 and describes how I feel about my wife, except we had no children, weren't able to
@@TrianglesAndCircles Thank you, my wife and I were married in 1999, and even after her passing, we are still together. I have continued to celebrate our wedding anniversary since her passing in 2022, and will continue to do so as long as I am alive and cognitive.
@@dalefleming6427 Faithfully. I told my wife that I will only marry once. This is a promise to God. Sorry, that means no renewing vows because the original ones are forever. That we promised each other once and here we go. In sickness and health. For rich or poor. FOREVER yours, faithfully.
"Mother Father" (recommend their 'Live in Houston - 1981' version) not only showcases Steve Perry's voice, but has a message of having faith in the face of a family that appears to be broken... the theme (lyrics) "I'm your seventh son -- have faith... believe" rings loudly and deeply throughout the song. HIGHLY recommend.
You just listened to one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time, Steve Perry. Journey was mainstream and popular but they resonated across genres. The first song I ever remember hearing was Wheel in the Sky by Journey. You should definitely check out more.
I know a guy that sang for journey after Perry left his name was Andy Avery he lives near me. Got messed up on drugs an alcohol but he turned his life around an found Jesus he sings at churches now in various places. Hell of a story an testamony.
Check out Open Arms, Lights, Who's Crying Now, or Send Her My Love, just to name a few. Steve Perry, "The Voice," is one of the greatest male singers of all time. He also went on to have a successful solo career and had several hits of his own. His silky range and control are otherworldly. If you want to hear his range, check out Mother, Father. It will blow your mind. They don't make music like this anymore. I'm glad I grew up when I did, hearing music from the 50s through the 80s on the radio regularly. I figured music would always be this good. Boy was I wrong. It's nice to see younger people discover the greats, and the pure talent before autotune destroyed the industry.
The album Frontiers came out in 1983. Faithfully is the 5th track from this album. I was only 22 at the time and like so many then, took for granted all the great songs, musicians and songwriters of the time. It took almost a couple decades to realize just how good music was in the 70s and 80s really was. You're right. They don't know how to write and arrange music like that anymore. It's nice to see young people react like we did back then. Steve Perry and Journey were on top of the world then. Perry's voice is immediately recognizable! There's no one like him! They don't call him the Voice for nothing. His soaring vocals are legendary! Also, the way he adds heartfelt emotions to his repertoire is iconic! I wish so much that music today was more like back then. 😢😂
I got to see journey twice here in New Orleans, with Steve Perry as the lead singer in an open air stadium and Arena and I was never disappointed,And that’s how he sounds alive
Im a full natural bass singer (sing in a barbershop chorus/quartet/gospel) and have been told by so many people they wish they could sing like me. Its natural for me, but my wish is that i would be able to sing like him, JUST ONCE id love to know what that feels like, that emotion, that angelic tone, its so beautiful, the way he tells his story, i bet i look fan girly like Amanda everytine i hear this
Steve Perry has to be one of the greatest high male singers in all of music. They don’t call him “The Voice” for nothing. He also puts so much feeling and emotion in his vocals. I imagine all those drunken renditions of their signature song couldn’t get anywhere near the excellence of his voice. It’s an incredible power ballad, plus my favorite one of all.
This is one of those songs you have to enjoy as the sun starts to fully set and there's a hot purple and pink sky and night sets in and cities come alive. A perfect song to end your day, work or school day. 💗💗💗💗
this is definitely an anthem for anyone that spends time on the road, it reminds me of family and makes me want to get home to my reward, my family, it brings a tear to my eye every time!!!!! Keep On Truckin
Amanda, you should watch the "Journey: Behind the Music" documentary that VH1 did. It's on RU-vid, but it's funny how this band was put together, then shattered over time. They have a new singer, and still tour.... but the rift between Steve Perry (the singer here) and the rest of the band is one I don't think will ever be repaired. Journey is iconic, and was absolutely at their peak in the 80s. I know, I was there. Their music could be played on almost any genre of FM radio channels. Everything from "Light" stations, to "Metal" stations. About the only stations that wouldn't play them were talk radio, country, and classical music stations. Everything else.... they had at least one song that would get airplay.
You are correct. I related to this as a long haul truck driver. That was my calling. I was excellent at it. 2.5 million miles driving nights thru Canada and US. Unfortunately, as George Strait wrote "I lost a wife and gf along the way". It's great to be tops in your calling..you only gotta give up what others have: wife waiting at home with dinner, time with kids, etc..and when you are done, you are done..and all you have left is a possibility to repair a relationship. I'm still hoping for that to resolve.
Fun Fact - 1. This video was taken from Journey's 1983 documentary 'Frontiers And Beyond'. Frontiers being the name of their album. Fun Fact - 2. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain wrote this song for his then wife Tane, who later in the late 80's would end up in a divorce. You saw him staring at her picture. Fun Fact - 3. While on tour Steve Perry would do 'add lives' in the songs. In this, the part where he sings 'we all need to the clowns to make us smile'. Perry would say 'Smile for me (wherever they were at, at that time). For me it was in Houston. So we heard ....'We all need the clowns to make us smile.......Smile for me Houston!!!' And smile we/I did!!!
Life will lead us in many directions. After medical school and specialty training and 30 years in the military with multiple deployments we will celebrate our 40th anniversary next month and 47 years together with cherishing and loving only each other for the entire journey. Our kids call us Unicorns for being extremely rare but I call us blessed.
I've always enjoyed listening to this song especially when I was deployed (either training or real world missions). It still to this day just tugs at my heart. ❤you Amanda.
The way I look at it that I didn't serve just for my loved ones but to protect each of our American citizens. I would do it all again if I were younger and less health issues. I looked at that everyone in this country is a loved one. Love 😍 you Amanda and have a great Labor Day weekend.
This song is so powerful seeing it done live. I did in July of 1983 on the "Frontiers" tour. 20,000, or how ever many are in the seats, singing along with their Bic lighter held high is a feeling that stays with you a very long time. Forty-one years now and counting. This kinda became Journey's sound after Steve Perry joined the band in 1977. They were primarily a jam band prior to then with founding members Neal Schon and Gregg Rolle formed the band having come from Santana. When Gregg left and Jonathan Cain joined in 1980 they hit the stratosphere.
I met my wife online, being apart is one of the reasons our relationship is so strong. We spent almost 2 years apart minus a handful of trips for a week here, a week there. Since the day we met, we have made sure that we talk to each other every day. In the 11 years since we met, 9 years since we were married, we have never had an argument. We make sure we always talk about what is going on in our heads. We are now both disabled so we are always pretty close to each other. I love it. My ex and I only argued for 15 years, no real conversation really. It was 15 years of hell.
Funny thing about song, the lead guitarist wrote song to his wife. He was sleeping with groupies at the same time. But the song is still an amazing and I love it.
Bon Jovi's "I'll Be There For You", Poison's "I Won't Forget You", Bryan Adam's "Heaven", Def Leppard's "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad", Great White's "The Angel Song", Guns N Roses "Patience", "John Cafferty's "Tender Years" (from the Eddie & The Cruiser's Soundtrack), Lita Ford & Ozzy's "Close My Eyes Forever", Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything For Love (but I won't do that)", "The Moody Blues' "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", Neil Diamond's "Forever In Blue Jeans", REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling", Rod Stewart's "Sometimes When We Touch", Skid Row's "I Remember You", Tesla's "Love Song", Van Halen's "Can't Stop Lovin' You", and Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind" are all great songs with a similar theme from that time period. Journey knocked it out of the park with "Faithfully" and it's on people's playlists around the world. I'm glad you got a chance to hear and appreciate it. Keep up the great work and keep smiling.
Journey is amazing! May I suggest another awesome band from this genre and era out of Canada called Triumph. A multi-talented 3 piece band. The song the lead singer / lead guitarist wrote is called: Fight The Good Fight ... Rick Emmett wrote this song in dedication to his Aunt that was battling cancer.
A quick fyi, this is a song of faith from Jonathan. Several of Journey's song were written as love letters to God, but they are just fantastic love songs period
Brilliant, there's nothing more to say. Steve is just great and he was Journey. Check out the "Escape" concert, it was awesome. Also the "Raisd on Radio" tour, "Girl can' help it" "I'l be alright without you... Also check out "I stand alone" and "Strong out" "When you love a Woman" and so much more, go on the journey
My Steve's favorite song is " Still they Ride". The work was crafted to perfection in terms of story telling, music ensemble and of course the vocal performance. The best journey song imho 🙏
Starting out with “Faithfully” is a great beginning to listening to your “good music” again. All Journey music with Steve Perry will fall in that category.
I always find it funny when people try so hard to find something that probably isn't there. For instance the mumbo jumbo about the sun. I imagine it was there it was pretty they filmed it.
One of the best band road songs must be Turn the Page, by Bob Seger. It was early in his career, he was struggling, and had a particularly rough time on the road.
My parents listened to country and 60s tunes, I spent my teens obsessed with *NSync then got into Linkin Park and Simple Plan and didn’t deviate a whole awful lot.
I've been driving trucks now 24 years. For the last six I've been getting home nightly. But my current wife has dealt with it all for the last nine years
by far my favourite journey song always gets me right in the feels from the get go! absolutely love this band and im 25 XD Good job my dad didnt have crap taste in music lol
A couple of other Journey songs you should do are the LIVE versions of Girl Can't Help It and then Ill be Alright Without You, both from the Raised on Radio album. Different concerts, but bith are great. Randy Jackson, from American Idol played bass on this tour.
During your first break, you made mention of how much more prevalent Love was in our music. What is interesting is that I did some research on this, hours upon HOURS of research, as a note, I also love psychology. There was a huge decline in that type of message once you hit the mid-2000s, not gone but significantly less and it has only decreased since then. While I won't say that all of the music from the 70s, 80s and 90s was that way, a lot of the music, if not about love or the loss thereof, there was a lot of music that was either reflective or about overcoming and pushing and striving, now the vast part of entertainment is about "me, me, me" or "gimme". I also looked at societal trends amongst younger people, granted social media has much to do with it, but as the love or persevering message decreased, the narcissistic tendencies increased. There are many factors but I really found this interesting. I've watched many reactors over the past several years and this is a common theme as they go through their journey (pun intended here) of how much our music centered around this and how they wish more music was like this.
Great reaction Amanda! Steve truly was and is "the voice"!!!! Hey if you're are looking for an AMAZING "Love Song" to react to an absolute MUST is "Too Much Heaven" by the Bee Gee's". I ASSURE you you will NOT be disappointed! It's INCREDIBLE! ❤ from Canada!
Thank you for this reaction and your message! Thank you even more for pushing back against mental health stigma, especially in regards to BPD. My best friend, who is borderline and professor at a Canadian university, started her own podcast on BPD stigma and treatment options: Cynthia Gralla, "A Real Affliction: BPD, Culture, and Stigma." Legend of a song Steve Perry voice out of this world. And yes Amanda music is not been make like this song anymore, the 80 music rock. Separate Ways also come from there best album Frontiers.
Men weren't afraid to show love to their woman without worrying about them being offended and being feminists. My high school gf in 1983 went with me to their show. This was our song.
For some reason, watching this makes me want to recommend that you listen to Of Monsters and Men (if you haven't already). Strong recommendations for I Of The Storm, and Thousand Eyes. Other favourites of mine are King and Lionheart, and Backyard. I also want to see you react at some point to VNV Nation, they've got some incredible music as well. Carry You is a song that's helped many people I know through some very painful times.
I would be in another state working for 4-6 weeks without coming home....but it was a fresh love affair every time I came home. It was tough, but it was also special. We ended up with a very close marriage that lasted a lifetime and loved each other very much. So there are two sides to this kind of situation. I would not trade our life together for all the tea in China.
if i had to name 3 of the better of love songs.. i'd pick. 1. "i love to be loved by you" - Mark Terenz (i sang that one to a gf once) 2. "Perfect" - Ed Sheeran (before fiance passed,..lung cancer. i'd asked her "what song best describes how u care for me" she chose that one. # "Forever" - KISS (good video, the power ballad love song feel to it is uniqe) enjoy, n bless ya :-)
Hi Amanda. Just wanna to say hi from Brazil. I really enjoy your reactions. I'll love to see you reacting to the newest Citizen Soldier's song, Burden.
You are absolutely correct about music in the '80s and even older having more soul, more depth and feeling. Even in this video it's really nothing more than a bunch of guys playing musical instruments on a stage and singing. So-Called music these days is at least as much about the show as it is the music. It's all auto-tuned computer generated with a dozen backup dancers and multiple costume changes, maybe a trapeze and some fireworks. All that does is distract from the music. ;
If you really dig deep down heartfelt emotional love songs like this song Faithfully by Journey. If only for your own personal listening pleasures to enjoy an energy vibe in the message of the music & the voice in the song. I'd highly suggest you to check out all the obscure John Waite solo albums or the songs John wrote in The Babys & Bad English. Just wanted to share a cool vibe & spread the love of good music. ++Peace Funk & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend++ 🤘😉🤘
One song you MUST react to "Leave the Light On" by Beth Hart; the story of living a suicidal life because of the abuse she endured as a child; her life is a testimony to living a "recovered life" daily.
Your first comments about post-trauma caused me to immediately pause the video. One of my favorite podcasters (Andy Stumpf of Cleared Hot) was the first person I heard say that. He doesn't use the disorder part of what's usually referred to as post-traumatic stress disorder. A disorder is an unnatural reaction to something. Traumatic stress causes very natural reactions to stresses that are beyond one's normal existence. Having reactions to things is not a disorder. Honestly, if you are *not* changed or affected by traumatic situations, *that* would be a disorder. Post-traumatic stress, yes. Disorder only if you allow it to control you.
Hello Amanda, a bit ago I would text you and you gave some great advice to me. Well I have a new challenge in my life, not sure if it's a mental health thing, but maybe a way hearing from you and all the subscribers. So yesterday 8/13, I've been diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. The news blew me away, I'm going Thursday to talk with my Doc and see what's best in terms of treatment. I'd be lying if I said I'm not scared, the biggest thing is knowing a did so little for the people who it, and poor kids. To me, this is mental, I want to forgive, amend, and let everyone know, it can be over at any time. Take a road less traveled, do what others wouldn't, and take time to care for yourself, we forgot who we are and why we are here! I don't know why I'm rambling, but still in shock about it. Amanda and this whole community, have been there for each other, stay true and know, one day one word or an act of kindness, could change a life, or prevent tragedy. Thank God for all of you, it's the humidity inside to make us strong, don't be selfish and if you a person in need, just acknowledge it, sometimes that's all it takes. Good people sense good people, your all amazing! 🥲
I’m deeply sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Receiving news like this is overwhelming, and it’s completely natural to feel scared and uncertain. It’s inspiring, though, to see how you’re reflecting on your life and seeking to make amends and live fully. You might enjoy the song Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw. Not that you are, there are a lot of treatment options at stage 2, but I suspect the message might resonate with you. Your message about taking a different path, caring for yourself, and acknowledging the importance of kindness is incredibly powerful. It’s a reminder that even in the toughest times, there is strength in vulnerability and the connections we make with others. The support of this community is here for you, and we’re all rooting for you as you navigate this journey. Remember, it’s okay to lean on others and to express what you’re feeling. Sometimes, sharing and receiving support can make a big difference. If you aren't already in our discord, here is the link: discord.gg/TUZ2vvma
Hi Amanda! I have two song suggestions for you to react to. Aphrodite's Child - spring, summer, winter and fall. The other is, Chris de Burgh - Turning round. I hope you like it!
Once again throwin' out a request for Aerosmith - Amazing - if you haven't heard that one, the lyrics will amaze you (see what I did there?) On a very different note - Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley & Allison Krauss, and the official video for Savin' Me by Nickelback.
