Dizzee blew up from his social commentry in 'Boy in da Corner'. It won the Mercury Prize (which basically the thinking mans awards) along with Roni Size (Drum & Bass), Ms Dynamite, Skepta, Dave, Little Simz.

"Dizzee Rascal, I LUV U & The Birth of Grime | New British Canon 17:56" by TrashTheory seems like a decent documentary explaining the rise of Dizzee and his importance to Grime

Dizzee’s beats and his flow/tone/cadence, his style of MCing was - especially at the time he first came out - utterly unique and arresting; it demanded attention (and propelled him to quick success). Boy In Da Corner is a masterclass in Grime - particularly as an album - it really set the blueprint for the scene like nothing else; we’d never heard anything like it, or anything like him. If it doesn’t sound so special now, it’s only because so many MCs that have since come through the scene took those early cues from him. There’s a reason everyone refers to Wiley and Dizzee as the main originators of the Grime scene. Even Wiley speaks to this. Both Absolute legends. There’s some interesting docs on Dizzee/BIDC and also on Wiley & Eskibeat on RU-vid still which have a lot of great background. I’ll link them below.

This is a really good background on Dizzee, the only thing I think they got wrong is making out that Dizzee came along after the birth of Grime, as opposed to being part of its inception. I Luv You and other tunes from BIDC were originally written when Dizzee was still in college, on the Music Department computers. Several people have testified to the beat I Luv You being in circulation from 2001, hearing different MCs rap on it etc before Dizzee recorded it properly for the BiTC album. And this short interview clip is Wiley basically giving Dizzee his flowers and acknowledging the importance of Dizzee in the creation of the sound and the direction of the scene. Really interesting to hear about and kudos to Wiley for articulating this. Wiley interview: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TQNN2hpwIoU.html

Think with Dizzee we can remember what music was available in and around the time and how he stood out, not just sonically but hearing what an eastend boy from ends had to say, unfiltered. Was new to me.

Sometimes it takes time to realise why people big up a certain person. It took me like 6 years to like Ghetts lol

Still think you need to witness boy in da corner in all its glory. For me "cut em off" is my jam Theres also a live performance of the full album he did in recent years that's pretty ill

Stuttering is cool. I think I haven’t heard enough either so I just need to give the og more time.
