I remember in my interview with Brent Smith of Shinedown that he was close friends of Sully from Godsmack, and I should give them a listen. And I didn't listen. A lot of time has passed, and I finally decided to take the plunge and hear what I was missing out on. And I was missing out on A LOT!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Godsmack for the first time, performing "I Stand Alone”.

Hi Elizabeth, a huuuge Godsmack fan here. I highly recommend checking out Sully Erna's work outside of the band, it's a lot more diverse and intricate. His performance of 7 Years off the Avalon album would be an amazing place to start and would be a great way for you to not only analize Sully's vocals but also get an introduction into Lisa Guyer who is a phenomenal and a criminally underappreciated singer. Guys, if anyone wants that, too, please upvote so Elizabeth sees this 😄

I think for balance, Under Your Scars, and Broken Road, although Until Then would probably be well-appreciated for the Cello.

if you're gonna do Godsmack from a vocal perspective, you really oughta listen to "Voodoo".

1998, I was sixteen and in a weird mood, I ripped Voodoo off my CD, extracted the intro part up to "...don't remember why I came" until juuust before the *ting* with whatever software we used like Audacity before Audacity. it's like 17 seconds. I dropped that file in Winamp and listened to it on repeat for four hours while playing through Quake (with the music off and the sound effects low). I thought for sure I would never be able to hear that song again afterwards, but nah, still like it to this day. and had a very memorable gaming experience into the bargain.

Sully is actually a drummer first and a vocalist second. However as the lead singer of Godsmack he does play guitar too, he has that tone of grit and power but he also has a very melodic and tender voice, very recognizable I would hope that you check more out, this band is great and he’s very versatile and I think you could grow to appreciate him

You're not alone at all in feeling that way. :) I'm VERY happy that you chose this song as your introduction to this band - on here at least. hahaha, it's crazy that you've never heard any of this! lol, this and Voodoo were played on the radio nonstop over the years and were played in a few films while also being featured in some video games as well. :P For future listening of Godsmack, I like many others will recommend that you check the song Voodoo out! Thank you for your analysis and reactions... The movie Scorpion King was so-so but the soundtrack was excellent... Godsmack starts out the album... System of a Down, P.O.D., Drowning Pool, Hoobastank, Rob Zombie, Sevendust... so many great groups. I really liked the song "Only the Strong" by Flaw from the soundtrack. They layer Chris Voltz' vocals during the chorus and cause a harmonic resonance that I can't get enough of...

I know you’re a huge advocate for mental well-being...Godsmack has a song called “ Under your scars” to remind everyone they’re perfectly imperfect. They (Godsmack) and Sully Erna started the “ Scars Foundation” for mental health. That song seems to have a lot of aspects you love as well....piano, orchestra etc...and shows a different side of his vocals. A lot of others are recommending “ Voodoo”...which is also great. I personally would do “ My Light” written about his daughter. It’s his Solo stuff, but showcases a lot of his diversity.

Finally! Their first 3 albums were the soundtrack of my teen years. I've seen them live 3 times and each show was amazing! Sully is an amazing musician and vocalist. In concert, he comes rolling out on a drum set of his own and will perform with/battle drummer Shannon Larkin(ex drummer Tommy is seen in the I Stand Alone video). This has been named Batalla de los Tambores and is a staple in their live performances. The band does a lot of community work and have also opened a charity called The Scars Foundation to help raise awareness for mental health issues. To hear a different side of Sully, I highly recommend checking out his solo Avalon album. He brings in Lisa Guyer on vocals as well. The video for the song '7 Years' can be found on his channel. Their voices harmonize perfectly and it is a must listen imo haha!!

As both a classically trained vocalist and a semi-professional amateur metal singer (mostly death metal), I love your breakdowns of some of my favorite music. I am grateful for my classical training in that I totally understand you as you break down the theory and methods. As a metal vocalist I can say that we don't always think things out and just feel the music and do what fits.I am a 90's kid, and this is my high school musical experience. I love that you love music for what it is, and you truly listen. I am thankful that you exist because you enrich my life.

A huge vocal nerd like you can't avoid to listen one of the best extreme singer: phil bozeman of the band called whitechapel. he has an unique talent you can hear very clear a lot of the words he sings, despite the growl or scream (in the 2 latest album he has addeded an unespected clean vocals too, that remember Maynard keenan). the band is so awesome, my suggestions for a first time reaction is “anticure” “i will find you" or “when a demon defiles a witch"

Voodoo's got to be the way to go in terms of vocal analysis of Sully's voice. I like singing karaoke and this is the song I always choose to sing because it's at the same time very well paced but also covers a wide range of pitches. Also, the intro requires a very good breath technique (something I certainly lack but I try to do my best).

They're still doing pretty well for themselves, though. They can pack 8,000+ seat arenas no problem, and still get new songs played on radio. Not bad considering that the whole nu-metal/post-grunge trend largely went out of fashion over 10 years, they held up far better than most of their peers.
