As a drummer, that intro is one of the best things I've ever heard. The 24/16 + 21/16 pattern over the 4/4 (headbangable) pulse that repeats 45 times is just mind blowing! I spent months learning that intro alone. Thank you for reacting to this great band!

I didn't watch the opening Olympic ceremony, but the next morning my mother called and asked me if I knew of the band Gojira? I said I did and asked why she wanted to know. She told me that they played during the Olympic ceremony and that she thought their part was cool. She also said she watched the video Another World by them later on that night and that she really enjoyed it. My mother is going to be 78 years old in a few days.

Hi Bethany, if you want to hear more of Joe Duplantier's vocal range (and his brother Mario's drumming), I recommend these Gojira performances: "The Gift of Guilt" (Live at Brixton Academy, London 2013) "Silvera" (Live at Hellfest 2016) "Pray" (Live at Red Rocks 2017) "Where Dragons Dwell (Live at Hellfest 2013) "The Heaviest Matter of The Universe" (Live at Vieilles Charrues Festival 2010)

Gojira’s vocals are so unique, I don’t get how he sounds so harsh but so clear at the same time. I’ve never had trouble understanding what’s being said and I think that’s important for the band because of their lyrical content.

For me, it's not even that the lyrics are audible but just the actual tone of his scream is incredible, and I have no idea how he does it. I can do all the ridiculous over-the-top deathcore stuff with no issues, but I just do not understand how to get Joe's tone whatsoever.

"Harmonizing with himself" is actually a perfect way to describe Joe's vocals. It almost feels like theres a track with clean voice underneath his harsh growls and screams, but he is just singing like that every time. Its not just a pitch scream too I think, its like a mix of clean voice, false chords and fry all going at the same time. His vocals are very harsh but theres always veru audible pitch, and he also choses how audible he wants this pitch to be in certain parts of the songs with a flawless control over that harsh/pitch balance. I absolutely love the way he sings, feels so emotional and raw, almost like yelling, never heard any other vocalist who sounds like Joe to be honest
@Megawatt

There are a lot of reasons why Gojira (and this song) is so highly valued by the fanbase, but man, one of the things that will always stand out to me is the lyrics to this song. Combined with the vocal style and composition, it just feels so contemplative and profound. An examination of how we live in life, how we prepare (or didn't prepare) ourselves for the crossing over from life into death. _"Neglected emotions lead to \ Catastrophic voyage on the other side"_ always catches me, and is the start of concepts throughout that will inevitable choke me up every time. For me, the most chaotic parts of the song feel like they're actually representing life itself, with the peaceful breaks representing the crossing over, the journey - finally - and perhaps then, the peace of death. I could gush and quote the lyrics all throughout this comment, but I highly encourage anybody reading or listening to this to read the lyrics themselves, apart from the music. And then alongside the song. *_"I cannot stomach these forms and colors anymore / But I'm here to continue, after all I have been through / I try to keep my eyes open, I am realizing / This life and death more precious than anything"_* One thing that a lot of people new to Gojira's music might not immediately feel, is how _hopeful,_ and tender Gojira's messages can be. The aggressive music isn't "anger" like it often is in the metal space, Gojira's aggression conveys passion and can be thought of as meant to evoke the weight of experience, or _an_ experience. The weight of the journey, the trials, the wound and the healing. But the one thing that you will consistently find with Gojira, is that they most often speak of growth, healing, finding peace, or transcendence, and the journey between. I love these guys. They're proper artists, and people. Passionate, thoughtful, evocative, poetic, and exciting.

I’ve seen Gojira twice at the gate and they are a very tight band. I don’t know if there is a right or wrong song to choose for Gojira because the band is 30 years old and they have a lot of different styles. You kinda gotta pick through the albums. You might run into the chant or shooting star and then run into To Sirius, Flying Whales or Remembrance. A lot of variety
@jez_77
@jez_77 21 день назад
Intro is basically a massive bar of 45/4 time signature. Its groups of 5s and 3s, the repeating pattern goes like this: 5 5 5 3 3 then 5 5 5 3 3 3 and then repeats, alternating between these two. On top of that theres a constant beat on cymbals (ride, then crash) in 4/4 that makes it a completely syncopated, unique beat. It was once a training excercise for their drummer, Mario Duplantier. Sounds so chaotic, listening it for the first time makes you feel like the accents are all over the place. Pretty tough for brain to figure out, even for very experienced drummers, not to mention playing it as tight as Mario does.

When I listen to this song I like to think of the frantic drumming and beats as a hearts last gasp trying to pump to sustain a life. The desperate chaos of it, matched with the lyrics, make this picture in my mind of a person going through their death throes with the music as their heartbeat and the lyrics their thoughts with that last section the person slowly fading out of consciousness.

Although this is a fan favourite track, this is not the best live performance to introduce you to Gojira - it brings the passion and intensity, but it's not as clean as other live performances (or the studio version of this track). There are 3 live performances I strongly recommend checking out though, if you prefer live to studio: "Where Dragons Dwell" Live at Hellfest 2013, my fav live performance, so intense yet very very clean - drummer legs of steel in 2nd half... "Pray" Live at Red Rocks 2017, a very beautiful rendition with extra section special for the show, it's phenomenal "The Gift of Guilt" Live at Brixton Academy 2013, probably the fan favourite live performance, largely due to closeness to studio version and hypnotic finale Studio tracks to consider: Flying Whales (their signature track) Stranded (most commercial) Born For One Thing or Amazonia (singles from latest album, accessible) L'Enfant Sauvage (critically acclaimed) or, just for me, Global Warming live at silvercord studio, my favourite Gojira track, hauntingly powerful call to action (they're environmentalists, it's the subject of many of their songs) Please keep going with Gojira, they're the best metal band in the past 25yrs and will be looked back on in the same breath of the greats in previous generations like Metallica, Sabbath, Pantera etc.

Thanks so much for checking out this song. Gojira are by far my favourite band.. The intro's percussive rhythm is explained PERFECTLY by Yogev Gabay's video which talks specifically about this intro. In my opinion, as a drummer, this is genius songwriting because it could be very easy to "cheat" when playing this song by playing it with a leading right hand as opposed to doing it *correctly* which would mean alternating the lead hand since it's counted in uneven beats. Once you get this feeling down, in your hands, it's SUPER fun to mess around with and it easily transposes onto other rhythmical instruments too. Gojira are GENIUS! Here's Yogev's video ; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JLYeGJzJMdU.html Enjoy the mind-warp and Mr.Bean....(you'll see...) 🥰

The reason for the "space between vocal lines" is that the first verse is in speech rhythm and intonation but growl technique, and that's a pretty hard combination to achieve while playing guitar on tempo. So, in this live version at least (don't know about others) the singer just comes in later.

I recently got into this band (way before the Olympic performance). Mainly because my sons have been to see them about 5 times. They are amazing. Mario is my favourite drummer hands down and I have been a metalhead for 61 years. (You are born one.) This song in particular is one of my faves. But I also love the groove of Lizard Skin and The Gift of Guilt live at Brixton Academy. Those are musts. The drums on The Forest from the album Terra Incognita will blow your mind. If you want vocal contrast: "Stranded" has some clean vocals in it.

Yeah, definitely go deeper into Gojira. Most reactors don't do this, but for maybe check out the Studio Live version of "Global Warming". That might be vocally their most interesting performance, and since it's recorded live in studio, it really shows his voice in all its glory. Although that performance is definitely done with the idea in mind that he doesn't have to do that every night on tour.

Good day! I must say, your voice is truly remarkable. Your beauty is extraordinary, and in today’s world, women with such authentic grace and elegance are a rare find. Even in the grandest museums, at the finest operas, or at distinguished scientific or art exhibitions, encountering someone with your refined presence is quite rare. Thank you for your delightful videos; they are a source of pure aesthetic joy. As a creator, you bring not only art but also emotional fulfillment, and I find your work to be profoundly enriching. ❤️‍🔥🤘🏻

Joe essentially has 3 parts that make up his vocal sound. The first (you don't get to hear it much in this song) is true vocal cord pitch. The second is a Fat Albert or Kermit the Frog pushing down and forward of the larynx. This protects his true vocal cords and gives some of the low gravel. The last part is the harmonic overtone of fry.

I completely get what you mean by the 70s rock vibe. Gojira are great at making rhythms that put you in a trance, it's kind of like psychedelic rock in that way, just a lot more metal! I'd love to see more reaction to them, for something different I'd suggest "born in winter"

Thanks for a good reaction. Gojira has a lot of environmental awareness in their lyrics. Mario is one of the best drummer in metal.

If you think Gojira is controlled chaos, you need to listen to the grandfathers of controlled chaos - Meshuggah, specially their track Clockworks.

For this style of metal, this is the best out there. So powerful! To totally give you a completely different style (progish), I’d recommend Fates Warning. Especially with Ray Alder on vocals. Point of View, Monument, The Eleventh Hour! A great lengthy one is The Light and Shade of Things. Awesome musicianship and great vocals.

Some recommendations: - Morbid Angel: God of Emptiness - Sepultura: Territory, Dead Embryonic Cells or stuff like Ratamahatta - Cynic: Evolutionary Sleeper - Candlemass: anything from the first two albums (in the second album isn't the same vocalist, but, both are killers) - Isengard: Over De Syngende Øde Moer - Mercyful Fate: Satan's Fall or Time... Or whatever. - Judas Priest: Victim of Changes (Epitaph live version) - Slayer: Crionics or Hell Awaits - Iced Earth: Dante's Inferno (Alive in Athens) - Batushka: Live at Brutal Assault - Angra: Rebirth or Late Redemption

Bethany, a few suggestions for your consideration: • Being Alive - Barbra Streisand (The Broadway Album); shows her talent is unmatched • Stoney End - Streisand; 1970 pop song, a shift away from Broadway tunes • The Carnival is Over - The Seekers (Judith Durham) ; a very special pure voice; also Georgie Girl and I'll Never Find Another You • I Am Australian - The Seekers; 2000 live version has HQ audio • The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - Joan Baez; 1971 • Up On a Roof - James Taylor; wonderful lyrics by Gerry Goffin and Carole King

I really like the way you analyse videos, including voices and overall performances. You should really check out some Skunk Anansie, especially the songs 'weak' and 'secretly'. It's not my favorite band, but i love those songs and I'd love to hear your opinions!

This song is heavy with the meanings, the lyrics are so good. The mixing in this show wasn't the best, but still their performance was insanely good. One song that is more mellow and I'd recommend is Low Lands from Magma. Very underrated song with clean vocals throug most of it, and in the end there's some harsh vocals. The melody is also very good, and it's a song they wrote as homage for their mother (the vocalist and drummer are brothers) who passed away before they began writing the album. I don't think they ever played it live since it's a personal song, but regardless worth checking it out. The album 'Magma' in general is a very good entry for their catalog seeing how it's not as heavy and it's very melodic, something that not a lot of metalheads will usually recommend lol. Most tracks from this album are very good (and underrated amongst metalheads) and they mostly have clean vocals.

Because you liked the trudging/stretched/heavy sound of this, I want to recommend you listen to some Sludge/Post Metal. One of my favourites of these genres are Cult of Luna and Russian Circles. Saw them last time last year (on tour together - jackpot!) and for me the whole concert felt like being stuck in a swamp while seeing sunbeams in the sky - if that makes sense to anysone :D

Its fun to see all these vocal coach reaction channels dip their toes into metal. However, literally none of them have done reactions to Messiah Marcolin with Candlemass, which is a real shame. I would love to see that reaction to his legendary operatic metal voice. There's really nothing else like it.
