As well as MC5, The hall is a sham. So much great music came out of Michigan. I saw GFR sitting on the floor crosslegged about thirty feet from the stage at an old ballroom in Lima Ohio right after the ON TIME album release. Mark Farner was dynamic. Great rhythm section. Even though it was a long time ago, I remember it well.

This may be the best live performance ever posted on You Tube in the history of the channel. And it should be noted that this sound is coming from only three guys who are between 18 (Mel on bass) and 20 years old (Don and Mark). . Grand Funk railroad was the best live band in the world from 1969 to 1975, selling out across the globe at every venue. Mark Farner is one of the most talented musicians to ever walk on a stage... he wrote 90% of the songs, was the lead guitarist, lead vocalist, played drums, keyboards in several songs, bass (early in his career) and the harmonica and played them all at such a high level. Super talented front man super talented band.

And the amazing thing is, before all of this major bands broke out, a lot of us got to see music like this while they were still touring tons of clubs that sat maybe 100-200 people. Or maybe they were big enough to open for someone already big. People could actually hang with the bands during their smoke breaks etc. My brothers saw *Heart* and *The Who* in bars. I saw *Billy Idol* in a university club. And the best part is, at least we were smart enough to realize that we were lucky to be there.

I grew up in the Detroit area in the 60's and 70's. Great bands would just show up in bars. Frijjid Pink GFR, Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger. Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, MC5...all local bands back in the day. I saw Hendrix warm up for the Monkees in 1967. The good old days!

I liked seeing good opening bands. Most of the main audience for the headliner wouldn't have even showed up yet. You could stand right up front without a huge crush from a crowd. And the opening band might be a little nervous, and would be thrilled to discover that there were enthusiastic people up front who were there to see them. It would create a bond between the band and the audience that was very exciting.

@@Rogers_Ranger My aunt who is only 8 years older than me took me to see the Monkees at Olympia Stadium in 1967. I was 10. Hendrix was the warm up act. It warped my little mind! That's why I got into the rock radio business. After seeing Hendrix I tossed out the Alvin and the Chipmunks LP's and got into The Animals and Spencer Davis.

We can sure be proud of our "homies"! I too grew up in Flint and saw them numerous times. My male cousin was a classmate of Donny Brewer, his sister had Donny's mother as her teacher (in Swartz Creek) and I worked with Mark's brother at the Drayton Plains GMPD.

My husband was raised in Battle Creek Michigan. They used to go to Flint and listen to them in the garage when they were a GarageBand! Saw them in Atlanta & they were phenomenal!! 😮😂❤

Watch the live performance from Shea Stadium …I’m Your Captain. The crowd was stomping and rocking out so much they had to call in the engineers to check the stadiums foundation. This is a great experience of what it was like to attend a real concert back in the day..65,000 people going crazy.

I saw these guys in Milwaukee about 3 months after I returned home from Vietnam ( 1970 ) and my ears were ringing for two weeks. Up until attending this concert the loudest things I heard were screaming F4 Phantom Jets 1600 mph and 175mm, 155mm artillery fire missions. Absolutely one of the best rock shows I saw in my youth. I'm 71 now and I have their cd's playing in the truck all the time.

This band rocks you every time. Saw them several times in the early 70s. They put on the best live performances you can imagine. Just rocked us all night long! This band deserves to be in the R&R Hall of Fame. Three performers! (although they did add a keyboardist some time later)

They brought on Craig Frost as a keyboardist ~ When GFR broke up, both Craig Frost and Don Brewer joined up with Bob Seger for years, although only Frost became a member of Silver Bullet Band.

The long haired handsome man on lead guitar and vocals is Mr Mark Farner. He has been one of my neighbors for 30 some years and he is as kind and down to earth a family man as he is talented. Mark-what a voice!!! Don-Groovemaster 3000 on the drums (did anyone notice the portion during the harmonica solo that his drum pattern resembled a steam engine train chugging down the tracks?) Then there is the monster in the room, Mel. His amp tone is epically terrifying. It sounds like every tube in that West Avalon amp is melting! The overdrive he’s getting out of those tubes is gorgeous! His grooves are infectious. GFR to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame please!!!!!

Lotsa folk won't do cover songs. Personally, I think you have to be comfortable in your own skin to do them. As a fan, I think the covers they did (this, Gimme Shelter, The Loco-Motion, Feelin' Alright) were some of their best work.

Grand Funk Railroad sold out Shea stadium faster then the Beatles did. When they played live there were no gimmicks or any of that, they were raw, funky, and soulful. Just like one of their songs says they definitely had that "rock-'n'-roll soul".

Grand Funk Railroad is a great American rock band from the 70's. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is one of my favorites. But they had a lot of great hits such as "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "The Loco-Motion", "Walk Like A Man", "Shinin' On", "Bad Time" etc.

How great to see one of my teenage favorites listened too and appreciated, all these generations later. Asia, that smile never left your face and I loved every second of it. It is great to hear how you guys appreciated the fact that they were performing live. There were no enhancements of any kind. It was just THREE guys - great, talented, practiced musicians, driving that funk-filled performance of rock for over nine minutes. And those vocals by Mark Farner were so fantastic. The music I grew up with was incredible. This was a joy to watch.

This is absolutely Rock and Soul. No other band can compare. Only three in the band and they blew it out of the Studio. I used to hear this with my cousin Billy when we would cruise Whittier Blvd. L.A. back in the day. He had a Low Rider, and we would blast the 8 track when this song came on and of course we were high. Miss him dearly he passed on 10/31/2021. Beautiful Memories. Now I am retired at 67 years old.

I sang this great rocker in our band TYne KYte back in the 70s when we played Bowling Green, Ohio. We were from LaPorte, Ind. area. Kicked off my shoes and danced in bare feet with the cute school newspaper editor right in front of me. She was sweet and took my shoes and put them out of the way and after the gig she interviewed me on a large wooden porch swing out front. She got my autograph and a kiss on the cheek. I was 20 then. Loved it... even though two gigs over in Ohio was for a bunch of strait laced college kids. Nerds. Grand Funk was one of the first LPs (Red Album this song was on) I ever bought in 1969. The second one I bought was Led Zeppelin 1 .Peace. (PS.. Rest in Peace drummer,and friend, Bill Kopkowski.)

Check out their live performance in 1974 of the song Heartbreaker. He’s another piece of info. Grand Funk Railroad has still not been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.

Lot of talent with yet another 3 guys making music. While I never was able to see GFR live, I did manage to catch Mark Farner with Ringo Starr's 3rd All-Star Band. He just stood in the back playing guitar to all these other's music. When it was time for him to play his songs he stepped to the front and became so much more - Professional musicians never cease to amaze me. [edit] While the quality of the recording is a bit rough, the performance was note for note from the album. Back in the day before cable (MTV) we had 'In Concert', 'Don Kirschner's Rock Concert', and 'The Midnight Special' (which survived many years).

One of my go-to bands in high school. Grand Funk deserves to be in the Hall but I think their drama has hindered that...had some bad luck with a bad manager syphoning their money and the internal drama with them in how they treated Mark in breaking up...but yeah, tons of rocking going on here with Mark, Don and Mel and whoever the pianist was. Got to see them in the 90s when they had the reunion tour. Still a great show, took my younger cousin who grew up with this music because of his dad who was my age...'so this is the band who did this music?' was what I heard at the concert, ha ha...so he enjoyed it too!

Watched a ton of reactions of this song cuz its one of my favorite. BJ nailed the summary. They left everything on the stage. Great analogy of the starving artists and the big moment. It's an electric performance from the soul. All 3 were taking it to 11.

We got a copy of their Grand Funk (Live Album) way back in the day and imagine a set with 10 songs with all that energy and we could hear the crowd having a great time. Even listening to that album after all these years you can still feel that great energy. The first time I saw them in concert they were already Big-Time and the opening act that night was a band we hadn't heard of, Black Sabbath. Needless to say that started a whole new adventure.

They didn’t have anything to prove by then I don’t think. Before this, they were playing at a festival in Atlanta and a scout was in the crowd who was floored by them and signed them immediately. They didn’t have to do the usual having to prove themselves for a record company that most bands did.❤️👏👏👏

It was a 1969 PBS show they were at in this video...GFR were ALWAYS even better live than on their records. They were always like this all 3 of them giving their all. And Mark Farner wrote most songs, sang most of them, played lead guitar, harmonica and also played the keyboards live a lot. He is still playing still this day and his "guitar licks" are still astounding! I saw GFR at the Forum in Los Angeles I believe it was 72 or 73. I brought my two sisters and a friend with me so I wouldn't have to go alone, none of them really heard or were into GFR until they were at this concert and I laughed so hard watching all 3 of them head banging like you wouldn't believe! They absolutely loved it, the audience went crazy!! As we got on the freeway and drove home (to the valley) our ears rang all the way up until the next day, those amps were so loud but loved it all!

Mark Farner is wild on lead guitar. GFR was immensly popular back then. Bought their albums. He s still singing today although it s mostly Christian music as he has mellowed. His voice still sounds great. This is pure talent from all three. Rare to have just 3 band mates let alone crush a rock n roll song that is as iconic and fabulous as this incredible masterpiece.

He's also playing a 100 dollar guitar he made payments on. The amps were built buy their good friend "West". Mark still uses the speakers out of the original cabinets. You also might check this song out on the "Caught in the Act" album. Oh, and they out sold "The Beatles" at Shea Stadium

They were fantastic live. For another band with unbelievable soul and energy check out the album Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore by Humble Pie. Mark Farner, Grand Funk Railroad's guitarist, said when they were flying into Shea Stadium to play they could see the structure of the stadium shaking from Humble Pie who was their opening act. He said they were a great band.

I was 13 when I saw them live and experienced their energy live. They are my favorite band of all time, period!!! Great reaction. You need to list to their first album, self-titled, but universally called The Red album, not a clunker in the entire album. BTW, not one of them was over 20 in 1969.

My older brother took me to see Grand Funk live at Cobo Hall in Detroit in April 1971.. a couple of weeks before I left for Vietnam.. these guys were excellent to see live.. I still remember it like it was yesterday..

This band was so good Live, no other bands out there would add them as an opening act. Led Zeppelin kicked them off their tour after 2 shows, in the middle of one of them. YES! They were THAT good. And sadly, yet another band ignored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with The Monkees, Harry Nilsson, and more.

This is a 3 piece band playing live! The bass is a killer! They have a ton of great songs. This band was out of Michigan. It is an absolute shame that they are not in the rock hall of fame. What a sham! There are some groups in the hall that couldn't be roadies for these guys!

Saw them live in NYC at Shea stadium in 1971. The entire upper deck was literally rocking up and down. Great band!

What a rock band looks and sounds like! I remember coming back from Lima, OH and seeing GFR Painted on a railroad bridge back in the 70s. I had to be in my early teens.

This album this song came from came out when I was eight years old. My Father never heard it, but he thought the 8 track tape of the album looked like something I would like. As a very young drummer, this tape changed my style of playing forever. A year before this video was made, they opened a show for Led Zeppelin. The crowd was going so insane over this band Zeppelin's manager saw this and knew his band could not follow them, so he had the plug pulled on Grand Funk so they would have to stop playing, blame a power outage, then bring on Zeppelin. Dirty pool.

Hey you ALL!!! Funk is one of the kick butt ROCK bands from my youth. This is a darn good cover!! The bass is killer!! And Mark is tearing it UP! These guys could get funky!!! Real funky...!! !!!!!!!!!! I was in my mid-teens when Funk came out with this masterpiece!!!! I am a lucky & blessed MAN!! O K you ALL -- this is rock & roll!!! Get DOWN!.......... You know it when you hear it!! Good stuff.... Raw talent you ALL!!!................... WOW is the correct response!!........ Funk was really GOOD!....... But you two know that now!............... MAY I suggest you two locate & review Funk's cover the Rolling Stones Gimme Me Shelter. THE live version is great....... What I love is just pure raw talent and there’s just three guys up there a drummer a guitarist and a bassist and the drummer does lead vocals some songs and the guitarist does lead vocals so they are complete band with just three people! It shows you don’t need 20 back up singers and back up dancers and all kinds of stuff on the stage to put a great performance on!!

One of my all-time favorite bands. I first saw them live in 1974 and another 7 times. This was one of the greatest live rock performances ever in my opinion.

This performance was recorded in Hershey, PA at the Hershey Community Center by WITF-TV channel 33 (PBS station) in 1969 for their show titled "The Show". There were only a few handfuls of people watching it live.

I hear ya! I’ve been there since the beginning. What we had in truly monumentally great music, they can’t claim that, ever. I feel sorry for the later generations, because their music can’t compare. I’m sure you’ll remember that, back then we had so much great music being released so frequently that we had to decide what we could buy and what had to wait. Now look at us. Instant music.
