It is a rock opera, exactly. The whole American Idiot album is. It follows the life of Jesus of Suburbia as he struggles to find his place in the world, has a toxic relationship that ends, and then disillusioned with life in general, sets off for the city ("the lights of masochists.") When he reaches the city, he sees that a revolution is starting and the youth is in revolt. In the song "Holiday," - The People are complaining about how they are sent to die for the whims of a greedy, violent, and bigoted government - "I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies - this is the dawning of the rest of our lives." Jesus continues on his journey, lamenting his loneliness and isolation in "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." At the end of his lonesome walk, he finds himself standing in the heart of the city at night and "Are We The Waiting" changes the mood to a pensive, melancholy one in which he resigns himself to wait for something to change, and proclaims that "The Jesus of Suburbia is a lie." At this time, he has a psychological break and invents an alter ego named "St. Jimmy". St. Jimmy is everything that Jesus was afraid to be. After his manic episode as St. Jimmy, he falls back into a sedated, depressive state with "Give Me Novacaine," and then he meets a riot girl called Whatsername in "She's a Rebel." She's fighting a revolution and draws him in. "Extraordinary Girl" is more about Whatsername and her indomitable spirit, then "Letterbomb" applies the brakes. It is about the revolution getting out of hand and the stress building until Whatsername finally tells Jesus/St. Jimmy, "I can't take this place. I'm leaving here (and you) behind." "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is a song Billie Joe Armstrong wrote about his father passing away, and he placed it here to represent how absolutely heartbroken Jesus/St. Jimmy is at this point. He is deeply wounded, and in fact, grieving what he has lost. In "Homecoming," St. Jimmy commits suicide ("Jimmy died today. He blew his brains out into the bay. In this state of mind, it's my own private suicide."), leaving Jesus as the only surviving personality. Jesus abandons the revolution and goes back home to the place where he grew up. He gets an awful dead-end job and reflects on his journey. Finally, in "Whatsername," he thinks back to the greatest love of his life and how he ended up in this place. "Seems that she disappeared without a trace Did she ever marry ol' Whatshisface? I made a point to burn all of the photographs She went away, and then I took a different path I remember the face, but I can't recall the name Now I wonder how Whatsername has been"

I've loved this whole album for years but I've only recently learnt the story and meaning behind it. When listening to the deluxe edition of the album it also includes the songs "Too much too soon", "Shoplifter" and "Governator" and I was wondering if you knew if they had a story behind them aswell like the rest of the album?

@@QuikVidGuy I always thought "September" relates to 9/11 that event and the wars it caused shaped the opening decades of the century and the "war on terror" felt everlasting like it would never end. Which makes sense since it's basically a war on war.

This is the bohemian rhapsody of punk. I can relate to this song ALOT. My parents divorced i blamed my mom, got an alcoholic step father that traumatized me into being an extremely passive sociopath, essentially making me socially and emotionally independent at 5 years of age. I never considered myself to be part of society and not a single person gave a fuck about me in my youth. I grew up in a small village in the mountains surrounded by farmers who where heavily religious. Logically i was bullied heavily but since i was sociopathic i didn't care about others opinions which saved me from taking it seriously. Instead i protected myself with violence which worked out very well for me because i NEVER got the punishment i definitely would have deserved. This is the product of a very obviously broken society. I just happened to be not a part of it so i got the best whiff of it. I got my life under control by now. I got more money than i need so i decided to study physics because it is my passion. Let's see where that leads me. I still want to stay true to my punk roots. I am going to be a punk physicist. I am going to wear my weird clothes and paint my nails for the rest of my life just to live out a special "fuck you" to people who can't handle it because i know there are enaugh. The amount of dedication someone can bring up, not only out of honest passion but also out of spite for others who doubt you is immaculate.

I saw them in Manchester (UK) a few weeks ago, and god damn is this accurate - while arguably not the absolute best from a music perspective (still has a lot of reliance of music preferences - friend loves them, I like them but only really listen to particular songs, 2nd friend is "they're good but not quite for me"), the three of us went and it stands as the best live performance any of us have been to so far, the way they still just throw themselves into the show is something else.

While they went on doing what they wanted, careers and dating and meds and therapy, many of us sat on the couch (our crucifix) while they were off doing their thing. The album "American Idiot" that this comes from was a concept album inspired by contemporary American political events, particularly 9/11, the Iraq War, and the presidency of George W. Bush. While the content is clearly of the times, (Billie Joe) Armstrong hoped it would remain timeless and become more an overarching statement on social confusion & anxiety. It was adapted into a Broadway musical of the same name that told the story of three friends from a small town called Johnny, Will & Tunny. Tl/dr, Johnny gets into drugs, Tunny joins the army & Will gets a girl pregnant.

Your analysis is pretty spot on. This is from their first Rock Opera and this song is the exposition of the main character of the play. You need to listen to the whole album in order for full context, but it's a play about discovery, corruption, internal struggle, love and loss in a very cohesive manner. They even have a freaking soliloquy in it! Very well done and one of my favorite albums of all time. The ending is incredibly powerful as well.

American Idiot is definitely a Prog album and no one gives it credit for that. This is my favorite song from Green Day. It's truly amazing.

Someone else has probably already commented, but this song is quasi-autobiographical. The song was written/recorded when Billie Joe Armstrong was in his early 30s, but the song draws from his teenage years. His dad died when he was 10 and his mom (a really nice lady) had a string of male "friends" that Billie didn't always get along with. He grew up in a small town and attended HS in a slightly larger town, two towns over in the SF East Bay. Neither town had/has much going for it, especially for young people. The 7-11 is across the street from the high school and the parking lot would always be full of kids before and after school (probably during too). abandoned

American Idiot is a concept album, and you have happened to have done the first two songs in order. You should continue down the album! The song Holiday would be next

Check out Silk Sonic's performance of 'Love's Train' on the Billboard Music Awards. It's a cover of Con Funk Shun's 1982 R & B hit. They added it to the music streaming platforms after the release of their album, 'An Evening With Silk Sonic'. It will appear on the official website vinyl version in August.

Green Day is the kind of band I enjoy. It helps me understand SOME of the “mind sets” of today’s youth. To me, this song represents the chaos of a generation that’s thrown too much information & no knowledge. I think the many tempo changes represent that. Their lyrics are inspiring IF you take the time to break them down. Most of their songs reflect the world around them with little to NO parental supervision. They’re from Oakland, California that were just starting out in 1987(?). They’ve remained popular bcuz their lyrics are as relatable today as they were then. The destruction of the bathroom & the fixing it seems like it’s being readied for someone else’s epiphany. Or it represents a fresh start. That’s just my opinion. What do I know??? TikToker’s say I’m from the mid-1900’s!!! 😂

Not this album, but my next door really liked the Dookie album and played it loud. Like really loud. We shared a wall so it resonated. I really did not mind, it was good music I liked. 2 AM on a Tuesday was a bit excessive, but really not that big of a deal really. A good decent neighbor who I said "hi" to in the hall occasionally. Mostly, I did not mind.

12:18 Not sure, this is just a theory, but maybe there wasn't a father figure apparent in the household in the video as the lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, lost his dad at age 10, as said in the song of that same album, Wake Me Up when September Ends
