Wow! Hadn't heard this for many years. Was very into IQ in the 80's after they were featured on a flexi-e.p and free promotional album through the music paper Melody Maker. I must have given the Melody Maker album and this IQ album away when migrating overseas.Gonna have to get into streaming them. Really enjoyed this blast from the past.

@@retroreactions....Btw Brandon, I am hoping for another Ultravox reaction as it has been 2 months since you featured Vienna which has garnered 1.5k views! I hope you had chance to look at the video for it because it really adds something to the atmosphere of the song. There are lots of gems from the same album. Another option is the opening track from the following album - "The Voice". This was also a single. However, a deep cut you would love is "Man of Two Worlds" featuring additional Irish/Gaelic vocals by Mae McKenna. It is really haunting. Right up your street!

The last Human Gateway is nothing short of a master piece, as a Debut song of the Debut album, Utterly Amazing from Start to finish.

There are so many great ones . . .probably an all time top favorite for me would be "Further Away" off of 1993's Ever album (and the two songs after it are also quite good: "Leap of Faith" and "Came Down" . . . just start with "Further Away" and play through to the end of the album! 😅) Also, 1997's Subterranea album has a ton of great music on it! It's a double concept album and best listened to start to finish but if I had to pick a single song off of it I'd go with "The Narrow Margin" which it the last song and 20 minutes long and has a good variety of IQ greatness in it! And not for your channel since it's from 2009, but their Frequency album is one of my most favorite! If nothing else for a treat for yourself listen to "The Province" off of that album (that and the song right after it called "Closer") hhmmm, maybe you can start a second channel called "Reactions To New Music From Retro Bands" where you only react to music released from 2000 to the present but only from bands that were formed in the 60's - 90's? 😄 6.37K subscribers

Hi, thanks for the suggestions. I have actually reacted to these other IQ songs already: Further Away, The Darkest Hour, Subterranea and Sleepless Incidental. I will add your votes for the other songs mentioned to my list. I will be starting Patreon very soon and won't have any year restrictions, so I will add the 2 newer songs to my to do list for that platform. That 2nd channel sounds like an amazing idea...don't tempt me LOL...absolutely no time available though for that 😬🙂

For sure! Wish I could feature them more. Good sized discography. I know they won't make the monthly artist cut, but always a rewarding experience when I hear them. 2 days until the next winning monthly artist announced! BTW, really curious about what you think of tomorrow's band hehe...

I remember that Genesis said bye bye to the Mellotron in the end of the seventies, so other bands began to use those typical sounds afterwards (like the flutes and the choirs here), reminds me early Marillion , so IQ were among the faithful to those vintage tones of early days. Also for the monophonic Synth solos, string machines. It's an interesting and daring progressive journey for mid 80's, were music styles were heading everywhere. Reminds me also the Italian band "the watch" close to Genesis too. I liked particularly the soft passages, thanks for the ride as usual!

I could not miss this one ! This is the original track from their debut album recorded in a very few days and it obviously needs to be re recorded. However it still provides a lot and I really love it. Can't wait for their upcoming new album. Over 40 years after they're still alive and kicking !

Yea, a bit confusing. Spotify shows "Attic" album to be from 1994 for some reason. Then I see that only sections of this song are on other future releases. I'm sure I heard the complete thing. Oh wow, a new IQ album? Awesome!!

@@retroreactions.... I'd love to see you react to material with the other singer the band had in the 80's. I suggest Common Ground from 87. No doubt you'll love it. Historic prog rock tour de force. Lots don't like these 2 albums featuring Paul Menel on vocals but in my humble opinion, both are brilliant. There were radio friendly attempts for sure but even those tracks are not that bad at all. I know you quite like pop songs too. Prog gems however remain present and are really worth it.

To be honest, Peter Nicholl's early vocals threw me off IQ for many years. Then the album “Ever” came out: I couldn't believe how much his voice had improved. It is so distinctive, so unique, I can't even imagine IQ without him now (he is also a very charismatic front man). Like you said, the band “won't make the monthly artist cut” but I'm happy someone at least gives them a shot on YT.👍 Can't wait to hear more from them! 🐝

Yes, surely Subterranea has superior vocals, but he still has excellent emotional delivery here, apart from pitch. I swear I was hearing some Fish in this one hmmm 🤔 Maybe everyone was inspiring everyone in the 80s! Yes, IQ will be on rotation for the life of my channel for sure!! Have a beautiful night..

'TALES FROM THE LUSH ATTIC' is IQ's first album... and already in 1983, the band announced the very high quality of the prog they were going to produce. At one time I owned five IQ albums. Some good musician friends borrowed two from me to discover the music of this group. After over a decade, these two albums have yet to be returned to me. Really too good, I think!!! 😉 No worries, I know they are in good hands. IQ, one of my favorite neo-prog bands... with BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST, SHADOW GALLERY, THE FLOWER KINGS and PENDRAGON. Always a pleasure for the ear to listen to IQ's compositions again. Thanks Brandon. [NB: By BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST, I highly recommend listening to the song called "Poor Man's Moody Blues" (from the album 'Gone To Earth', 1977). A magnificent composition, directly inspired by THE MOODY BLUES' masterpiece, "Night In White Satin". A very beautiful musical rewriting with a variation of the lyrics. Somehow, an amazing and awesome tribute!]

Hi again. You mentioned the likelihood of Subterranea. It's good, but of the ones in your timeframe I think that 'Ever' is more representative of them. After another listen, I got the impression that Sub... (19 tracks) was a bit more down to quantity rather than quality.

Brandon, I can see why you like it, very Genesis-ish. While it doesn’t sound the same, I think you’d really enjoy the album “Moving Waves” by Focus; it does contain the hit “Hocus Pocus” (think prog with yodeling) but the rest of the album will give you very much the same feeling you like in this one.

Raptures of delight... IQ are back. This one spectacular, but not my favourite. Peter Nicholls excellent vocals not as on point as usual. I've been into them lately enough to buy 2 or 3 albums. 'Ever' and 'Subterranean' are good and in your time frame but they're a rare band who seem to have got better in the 2000's. 2014 'Road of Bones' is probably my favourite. Cheers Brandon.
