Flashdance is a fun 80s movie but Cara only did the theme song. Jennifer Beals is the actress in the video. Her dancing was mostly done with a dance double (Marine Jahan).
But there is a real actress - dancer, the blond with short hair; the first one we see in this video at the strip club' I think... and she is the pro dancer (actress) in the film Dirty Dancing.
Lara .... You're right ..... Irene Cara didn't act in "Flashdance" she only sang the theme song. I believe Irene Cara got her start on a children's TV show, something like "Seseme Street". She started in a movie about three young women in a singing group back in the 80's. I want to say it was called "Sparkle" but I'm not sure.
I can't express enough how grateful I am to have grown up in the 70s and 80s. It was so, so special, and that feeling of genuine fun and joy is just gone in general, and specifically in music now. We really did feel like this during the 80s, just so much more carefree and fun
If you were a teen or young person in the 80s, it was a requirement to see this movie.. lol. Everyone saw it! And we all saw “Fame” too. Both had excellent soundtracks that fit the vibe of the films.
I remember one moment in Flashdance where Jennifer Beals removed her bra from under her shirt like it was a magic trick in front of the guy who was her boss. I was just 14 when this movie came out & was going through/adjusting to puberty at the time so you don’t need to be a genius to figure out what THAT scene did to me 🤪🤪😂😂
@@shirleydurr411 … Good morning from Australia 🇦🇺✌️😁🇦🇺. As I mentioned to Elise, I was just 14 when I first saw the movie & that scene, thanks to my “raging out of control” hormones, damn well blew my mind 🤯🤯🤯. It wasn’t until after I graduated high school that I began to notice so many women at the time who could do it (literally) with their eyes shut 😆😆😆. To a normal adult male, it might seem like nothing at all, but to a wide eyed teenager (male) just starting his journey through puberty, the image implanted in his mind will send him bananas & become TATTOOED in his brain 😂😂😂. To me at the time, that was like something out of a David Copperfield “playbook” ✌️😄✌️
@@skinmeister1 … ABSOLUTELY!!! The title song itself was a monster hit for Kenny Loggins & the movie was released in the year I graduated high school. There were a number of other dance movies with songs that were huge in discos & dance halls like Fame, Flashdance & who can ever forget the iconic & legendary Saturday Night Fever & Grease??? Sadly, they don’t make dance movies like those anymore. That Footloose remake sucked in 2011 😖😖😖
Yes Maniac is a great song. This kind of movie is not my cup of coffee, but that song is great. I never saw the movie but What a feeling and Maniac were huge hits.
The song spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts around the world. It was awarded Gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of one million copies and won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song and earned Cara the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. btw, that is not Irene dancing.
Irene Cara had her big break in the movie Fame 1980, and won an Oscar for that song, as well as for this song from Flashdance! She was ripped off by the record industry initially for not receiving royalties from her fabulous work! I don't know if that was ever settled, but I hope for her sake it was! Irene is a New Yorker of Puerto Rican and Cuban heritage! Your other subs pointed out that Jennifer Beals actually starred in Flashdance, and a French dancer did most of the dancing doubling for Jennifer! Irene provided this Oscar winning song What A Feeling!
The original movie Fame was better than flashdance to me. And so far no one's done a reaction to fame. And Gene Anthony Ray, may he rest in peace who played Leroy he was a great dancer.
Rip Irene Cara 😢 11-26-22 ! Such a talented beautiful woman ! The other movie was Fame it was also a TV series of a Performing Arts High School in NYC ! Still open today!
She was also in "Fame" the movie. These films were a big influence on me, as a young boy in England at the time. Early Hip Hop and Breakdancing were coming through to the main stream and at the time we were hungry for anything like it. The film had a great message to inspire anyone.
She played coco in the tv series fame but didn’t play the character in the movie. But coco is the character who sings the song fame in the movie which Irene cara did for the theme for fame the tv series and movie
I think the film BJ is referring to is "FAME". This is the era that had all the girls wearing "Leg Warmers" around their ankles LOL Keep going with the reactions guys, absolutely love them Steve from the UK
Yes, you need to watch the movie. It is one for all time. Sad to say Irene Cara passed away 3 says ago. For you info the main actress Jennifer Beals had a body double who did all of her dancing. Her name is Marine Jahan who was not give credit for her performance. What a shame. Love you two and your reactions. Thanks!
The 80's were indeed a huge decade for dance. Including some very interesting and great, lesser known collaborations like the late great Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov in the film "White Nights". Another 80's quintessential dance song is Lambada by Kaoma!!!
Irene Cara is an actress (I believe the movie "Fame" was her first film.) but she does not act in the movie "Flashdance." She does sing this song plus she co-wrote it. She was also in the original "Sparkle" movie (1976) -- a far better movie than the remake in 2012.
Glad you guys played the video. The character, played by Jennifer Beals works in a steel mill and is an aspiring dancer with, as any good dancer, a rocking hot bod.
Irene Cara is not in this movie., She just sings the song. The star of this movie is Jennifer Beals, and most of her dancing is done by a double, except the closer-up shots. Irene Cara also sang the theme song to the movie "Fame", and she was in that movie.
Asia, BJ… This is easily one of the greatest & most recognisable dance floor hits of all time ☝️😄. I remember having a massive crush on Jennifer Beals at the time (I was just 14 when this released) & when I was old enough to go to dances & clubs & this song came on, the number of people who would swarm the dance floor to get down with their bad selves was phenomenal. It was, is & always will be one of the biggest dance floor hits of all time ✌️😄✌️. Best wishes to you both always from Australia 🇦🇺✌️😎🇦🇺
A HUGELY popular movie! Make time to watch it. It helped popularize the look of dance wear in the street (which real dancers did). The dancing is great, and Irene Cara's voice is the cherry on top. She acted in and sang in "Fame" about the students at a performing arts high school in NYC, and she was amazing. Listen to "Hot Lunch"--great scene filmed in the high school lunch room.
Irene Cara as everyone said below is not the dancer or actress in the video, Irene Cara sang this song, Theme from Fame and “Out Here on my Own”. As an actress, Irene Cara was in Fame but was also Sparkle in the original movie. She also was in Roots the Next generation.
This is a song from a movie soundtrack in the '80s so you have to remember they wrote it specifically for the movie and the video featured lots of movie clips. That's one thing I miss from back in the day is the incredible movie soundtracks. Irene Cara was in the movie Fame also the original sparkle movie and had a cameo in DC cab which she also wrote a song for the soundtrack. You guys could probably do a live event just based on '80s soundtracks and hear some of the best music ever
1983 wooooo! Great soundtrack! If you remember, Michael Sembello did the song "Maniac" that his wife sent into the producers and they loved it. "Out Here On My Own" is another song Irene did that you might want to check out sometime. The movie does have a good scene of break dancing. This song should be on your playlist.
Three different women are featured here: Irene Cara is singing, Jennifer Beals is playing the female lead in the movie from which the video is taken, and finally a professional dancer is is doing body double work for the dance scenes. Irene Cara did play one of the leading roles in the movie Fame though.
If you watch the video of Irene Cara singing this song back when it came out, she’s just adorable and looks similar to Jennifer Beals in the movie. Check out the movie- I think you’ll really like it!
Irene Cara was an actress in Fame and also sang in the movie. Flashdance only featured the song by Irene...she was not in the movie. This song won Irene an Academy Award for Best Song in a feature film. All the great dancing that was featured was done by a dance double. Jennifer did not dance any of the big scenes.
Iren Cara did only the soundtrack. Jennifer Beale(actress) used a double in the movie. she didn't do the dancing only acted. the soundtrack was hot. the ending of the song had so much gospel. i love this song. it stays on my music list. very uplifting
The actress in this movie Flashdance is Jennifer Beals the singer is Irene Cara who also had another big hit called Fame from the movie Fame Irene had great movies too she was the Original Sparkle !!
Jennifer Beals was not a professional dancer although she did the head shots. During the harder dance moves French dancer and actress Marine Jahan doubled for her. During that dance scene in the video, they also had a gymnast Sharon Shapiro double doing the flying and flip move and a male 16 year old break dancer Richard "Crazy Legs" Colon double for her doing the whip backspin moves. His group "Rocky Steady Crew" had a bit part in the film. Saw this film years ago as a kid it's quite good.
Irene Cara was cuuuute. She also sang the theme song for Fame. The studios screwed her and stole her money. Flash dance is an awesome movie if you've never seen it.
Irene Cara is a great singer and occasional actress. First became famous in the movie Fame in which she also sang the title track and some other songs in the film.
One of the greatest dance tracks from the 80s. But please react to her other hit, "Fame", where you can really see Irene in the video, she played the main role in the movie FAME. Another hit was "Breakdancin`"). btw you listened to a short version, there is a longer one.
Irene Cara is a great and beautiful singer, unfortunately she's not the lady in the video. That's Jennifer Beals, the star of the movie "Flashdance". "What a feeling" was the signature song of the movie and the video was basically a commercial for it. Flashdance was the biggest dance movie before "Dirty Dancing" came around. Secret fun fact, some of the more difficult dance scenes, like the audition scene shown in the video, were actually done by a professional male dancer, not by Jennifer.
Watch the entire movie. One of the most inspirational movies ever. And I dare either of you to watch the final audition scene without tearing up. Both of you. :)
That video doesn't feature Irene Cara (she's merely singing the song for the soundtrack). The actress in the role was Jennifer Beals, but the dancing was done using a stunt double. If you want to see Irene Cara check out "Fame" where she did sing and act.
2 things about this film. Not only was in extremely low budget to make with huge success for the 83 year but it also came at a time where it seems nobody blinked an eye at serious age gaps. Jennifer Beals was 19 filming and her boyfriend Michael Nouri was either 37 or 38. Song was pure fire at the time and Beals cut out sweatshirts became a fashion for a while.
Some humans... dancers, actors, martial artists, acrobats sports folks etc, just engage so much with the physical nature of our existance, they are amazing to watch.
Irene Cara was in the Movie FAME, and a song she sings, OUT ON MY OWN is awesome. Irene Cara, is not the dancer your looking at. She sang the Song only👍🏽. FAME the movie is one I recommend watching, it was inspirational for a young girl like me to watch back in 1980 to want to become a singer, actress, dancer. It was about young talent going to a school of art. Very cool.
In 1980, Fame the movie was released. 🎥 Irene Cara was 1 of the actresses. She sang the title song. Suggested next video 📹 Why Me. In 1983, Flashdance starring Jennifer Beals was released. Irene Cara sang the title song. Great song 👍 It won 1 Grammy and 1 Oscar 🏆 The music video has an Easter egg!🐣 L🤣L Lyrics written by Irene Cara and Keith Forsey. Music by Georgio Moroder. Back in the 1970s, he wrote songs for late Donna Sommer and a number of dance music singers💃 1980 GM wrote Call Me with Debbie Harry. 1982 GM wrote Cat People 🐈 with David Bowie.
This is actress, Jennifer Beale, in the video. Irene Cara acted in Fame, and sang the theme song. Irene Cara was also in Roots, The next generation, the sequel to Alex Haley's Roots
This was filmed in my hometown of Pittsburgh pa in the 80s when steel mills where still operating I miss Pittsburgh but I still have the accent lol the movie is awesome
@@notwokevikingrules401 Actually a male was used for just ONE move ( the breakdance move), For the rest of it they used a female dancer called Marine Jahan.
Sadly, we just lost her. If you want more, you need to see the movie "Fame" and listen to the song "Fame," also an academy award winning song. She was also nominated for for an academy award for the song "out there on my own" during the same year. She was a real talent.
I watch your video reactions and enjoy them a lot! I'm sure someone must of mentioned your hair Asia but I didn't see any as I don't always read each comment but I love it! You are a beautiful lady either way . Your fan from Canada! 🇨🇦 😁
No guys that Jennifer Beals. BJ are you talking about Fame, when you're talking about Irene?. Irene just did the soundtrack to this. Thanks 👍♥️, this was Circa,83-84 Era.
Brings me back....so many memories I have goosebumps! Just like Lara said, that's not Jennifer Beals dancing. She had a dance double. I love that movie. BJ, I think you're talking about Fame the movie.
Jennifer Beals wasn’t the real dancer in the movie Flashdance. it was a double that did all the dance scenes. The skater was played by her friend actor in the movie. This was Jennifer Beals first movie ever.
I remember being upset when I found out that the mean star who is Jennifer Beals is not dancing. Irene Cara was the star of the TV show Fame where she does dance. A great TV show about a performing arts high school in NYC. Check out the Fame song and Video !
Need to check out Irene Cara 's ballet "Don't Throw Your Love Away" from her 1982 Album [Anyone Can See].One of the BEST Latina voices of The 80s music decade just above Lisa Velez aka (Lisa Lisa) of Cult Jam.🔥❤️
Irene Cara sang the song, Jennifer Beals did the acting, Marine Jahan was the actual dancer for the character's dance scenes. You have to watch the movie, it's awesome.
Flashdance made Jennifer Beals a star literally overnight. She could have continued acting permanently, but chose to put that on hold to finish college, graduating from Yale in 1987. She's done some really good work in films and tv down through the years, but playing Bette Porter on The L Word is my favorite!
BJ is right. It was the struggling artist times. I went to Music & Art High School and when I tested for the school it was pins and needles to see if I would be accepted, I was. The school combined with Performing Arts and became LaGuardia H.S. in NYC. Thanks for the nostalgia, I ❤️ the 80s.
The dancer in the video is Jennifer Beals, (though not actually her dancing as it was a stand-in's Marine Jahan dancer and gymnast Sharon Shapiro not Irena Cara who sang the song. Irene Cara was an actress as well as singer as many others have said, most noticeable for the original film Fame and Fame T.V series.
I know errrybody gonna call BJ out for saying that was Irene Cara in this video dancing!🤣🤣she did the song for the movie flash dance she was not in it.🤣🤣
