Yep, I’m 59 but when I hear this I’m 16, in my bedroom with my headphones on, falling in love with Sylvians astonishing vocal, the wonderful oboe part and being blown away by lyrics such as ‘the width of a room that can hold so much pleasure inside’. Genius

Around 82 there was rumours of an unreleased song from Polaroids called 'Some Kind Of Fool', I remember it being denied at the time. In 2000 Sylvian released his compilation 'Everything and Nothing' and I eventually got to hear this beautiful piece; all be it with a new vocal and just like 'Night Porter' is been a fave ever since. I guess David knows how to capture a soul. My recommendation is the sublime 'Blackwater' from the 1991 'Rain Tree Crow' album. Sylvian has so many works of emotional art, dare I say masterpieces to name but he is very much worth a deep dive. For a different flavour of Japan try something from the first two albums, 'Adolescent Sex' and 'Obscure Alternatives' they are more in the style of the New York Dolls but still a good listen, though I remain happy that they changed tact and we got to here Sylvians fantastic baritone. Always very happy when someone dips into the Japan/Sylvian world, both sadly get ignored by so many. Than you.

Great new artist! This is the first I’ve ever listened to them….what a treat! We’ll bud, we’re back in sync, before you mentioned either, I was thinking about the melancholy sound, and I also got the carnival vibes!! I do remember seeing that Richard Barbieri had been in Japan. Looks like a new rabbit hole 🐇🥕! Lol

Cool, so I think you like Japan more than the Sylvian solo stuff I did. We are usually so N Sync, we might as well form a 90s boy band 😂😂😂 Probably time to change the channel name to "Rabbit Hole Reactions"!!!!

@@retroreactions.... Then perhaps you'd be interested in Steve Hackett's “Sketches of Satie”, an album of classical guitar pieces he recorded with his brother John on flute - a nice intro to Satie's music. As for Japan, you'll always get my attention whenever you feature the voice of David Sylvian.😍

It was 1980. Disco reigned still. Dissatisfied listeners like me were desperate for something else. Most radio stations couldn’t get past classic rock or Top 40. Simmering underground were artists like Japan, The New Musik, Depeche Mode, OMD, Magazine, Talking Heads, The Police, The Cure, Kate Bush & U2 and so many more. What a great time for music. They called it New Wave. 🌊🌊🌊. It tsunamied disco. Arguably a turning point for musical expression.

Hey Brandon, thank you so much for reacting to this. It's been a long long time secret (kinda) favourite song of mine. I thought not many people know it. Maybe it's just me but I expected David Sylvian to appear in the background, sit down on that rocking chair and wait for night life to begin. Hi Brandon, it's such a pleasure to listen to your voice and watch you enjoying the music, especially when you're listening to some of my all time fave songs. This is one of them, the others being "Forbidden Colours" or Talk Talk's "Renée" for example. Mick Karn played the oboe. There's a beautiful live version of "Nightporter" on the OIL ON CANVAS album. Talking about oboes in pop songs: Ever listened to Tanita Tikaram's "Twist In My Sobriety" (1988)?

Haha, nice! He'd go perfect in that dark room, as expressed in the lyrics. So happy that you like my channel and some of my song picks. I definitely try to be diverse. Japan live should be my next off camera quest here. I have definitely never heard of that artist or song. Is there a specific genre that they are in? Thanks so much for stopping by today 😊

My favourite Japan track on my favourite Japan album, good choice for a start. Did you know that Japan were supposedly a big early influence on Duran Duran? Their early image was heavily based on Sylvian and co, though they very quickly surpassed Japan in terms of fame. I think I've heard Richard Barbieri recalling times when Duran Duran used to be big fanboys at their gigs.
@retroreactions....
@retroreactions.... 2 месяца назад
Hi Stephen. So glad I picked your fave! Oh yes, I've heard people say more than once that Duran actually copied Japan. Of course Duran is my # 4 fave band, but I don't know Japan's music to be able to say if I agree or not about the copying. Yes, clearly Duran became huge in the 80s, but it's an interesting case where behind the "poster boy" images were highly talented musicians and amazing songs. I'm sure you've heard that said many times too. Ah, OK, read your last sentence. Well there's the proof right there. If I was in an active new wave band in the 80s, I'd certainly use Sylvian as inspiration/influence too!! Thanks so much for watching...🙂

@@retroreactions.... I think you can hear and see the influence mostly on Duran Duran's first album, but they took off in a different direction after that, with many more influences from other genres.

Beautiful song with some piano, never heard before. Certainly inspired by a Gymnopedie from Eric Satie and also probably Ryuchi Sakamoto. Not typical mood from Japan at all which are usually experimental electronics. Have a nice weekend Brandon!

David Sylvian has taken the aesthetics of pop to a new, higher level. For me, he's in the same league as Kate Bush, Scott Walker and Bryan Ferry.

Of course I like it Brandon, that was quite a curve ball. Thank you for holding your word, even though it's far from my favourite Japan song. David Sylvian had this very weird career, some of his solo work is wonderful, then he descended into himself and explorations no one can enjoy but himself. Cheers from Paris dearest ❤

I know Japan is supposed to be New Wave, but, this song is a piano piece that needs the proper production and the right singer to fully flesh out the lyrics. Spoiler alert: they found the right singer and it is well produced. Well done
