Not only are the brothers self taught dancers, but they did this in ONE TAKE. Even Gene Kelly called this the GREATEST dance moment of all time.

Your enthusiasm and excitement to Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers brought me to tears. I'm a 63 yr old fat white guy and my dad turned me on to this vibe when I was just a kid. People don't even realize that he was the grandfather of rap and hip hop. These men had the swag b4 swag was a word. I was blessed enough to have seen him live as a kid and I also got to shake hands with Fayard the older brother on the Blvd yrs later. I wish that we all had cameras in our pockets back then, how cool of a selfie would that would've been? I just love the way that old school music works with you...

Cab Calloway was the Prince of his day, equally talented and off-the-chart COOL! By the way, the performances seemed effortless because they highly disciplined maniacs for perfection and relentless when it came to practice.

I'm a fat old white guy who loves and respects the man. IMO he invented the swag, rock and pop that we all enjoy today. I was lucky enough to have seen him perform live as a teenager and I will never forget being able to sing the call back Hidee Hidee Hoe song with the icons. BTW he wrote a great autobiography that makes the whole story so much more amazing...

Love this. Cab Calloway was such an entertainer. This is big band/swing music. Its awesome. It gets you moving. You should react to couples swing dancing...bet no one nowadays could do it. Fred Astaire was once quoted as saying this was the best dance routine ever recorded on film. He felt his talent could never even hold a candle to theirs, and he was the most famous dancer in history. The Nicholas Brothers deserve a lot more recognition than they get.

There was a greeting back in the day: "What's swingin', gates?" Gates swing, so a swinger was a gate. Cab mentions "gate" & "gaters" in his song; he wasn't speaking of aligators, but gates, swingers.

i was born nine years after this was filmed, so I was familiar with it from watching it on TV. It never fails to amaze me. I love watching the reactions of people who have never seen this before, especially young adults I have to chuckle when they can't believe their eyes. When the Harold and Fayard get to those first splits, I can't help but think 'You ain't seen nothing yet!'

That comment about brothers is sooo true you need to check out the isley Brothers too you love Guitar Ernie Isley is a prodigy of Jimi Hendrix who played with the Isley brothers before they recruited there younger brothers in Brother in law to join them. The Haro'd Brothers are Tap legends that preceded Sammy Davis Jr. Gregory Hines and Savion Glover. Harold Nichols went on to more know to Folks as his iconic role in the Bill Cosby Sidney Poitier Film Uptown Saturday Night as the gangster " Little Seymour"

They did not have formal dance training! They just watched folks and added their own moves. Neither had hip or knee surgery. (At least it's not mentioned in their biography.) Fayard, (taller one -- (1914 - 2006.--stroke) Harold (short one) -- (1921 - 2000 -- heart attack) Fred Astaire once told the brothers that this dance number was the greatest movie musical sequence he had ever seen! No one can do this today. Computer-generated jumps would have to be made. (side note) I don't know if you've ever watched 'Good Times' (James and Florida Evans). The orchestra conductor, Cab Calloway, is the man said to had been Ja'Net DuBois' father. She played Wilona Woods on the show. She did not tell anyone because she wanted to make a name for herself, and not be known as his daughter.

And for the connection: A rather very young Janet Jackson was also on that show, who both loved and studied both Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers. That came full circle when she released the video to "Alright" in 1990. Both Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers are in that video.
