I know this song from the TV series Supernatural. So if she's ever seen that, that is probably why she thinks it's from a movie . It's one of Dean's favorite songs.
The next song of theirs you guys should check out is "Dust In The Wind". It's probably their most popular song but it's an absolutely beautiful composition, you've got to hear it.
This is on of those songs where all the instruments are going crazy. The guitar riff and solo is great. The drumming is constant and wow throughout. But ... this is one of those songs that makes me wish I knew how to play the keyboards. If you like some violin in your rock music, try Kansas's "Dust In the Wind" ... its beautiful.
Kansas is a very underrated band... Formed & rose to prominence in the 70's, Kansas has kept recording and touring w/ their brand of progressive rock music until today w/ a changing line-up for decades... Current Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse was once a member of Kansas. They are known to craft music w/ complex arrangements like Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, and Tool. The band was formed by Phil Ehart (drums) and debuted in 1974 w/ Rich Williams (guitar)... Steve Walsh (vocals & keyboards) did this 1976 record 'Leftoverture' w/ Kerry Livgren (guitar/ piano/ synthesizers), Robby Steinhardt (violin/ viola) & Dave Hope (bass) ...This line-up also recorded the other big Kansas single 'Dust in the wind' (from the 1977 album 'Point of know return') Kansas has released 16 studio albums since 1974 ...their latest records being 'The prelude implicit' (2016) and 'The absence of presence' (2020)... The current Kansas line-up: Phil Ehart (drums), Rich Williams (guitar), Ronnie Platt (lead vocals), Billy Greer (bass & vocals), Tom Brislin (keyboards & vocals), and David Ragsdale (violin/ guitar)
Towards the end of recording this album, they realized they needed one more track. Kerry Livgren, lead guitarist and songwriter, went back to his room and knocked this masterpiece out...in one freakin' night! He came to the studio the next morning and asked the band: "What do you think?" Needless to say, the band rather liked it, lol.
Welcome to Kansas. So many more good songs to check out by them. This song was thrown on the album at the last minute and made them a household name, but there are so many great songs in their catalog of music.
"Kansas" is one of the best Prog Rock bands of the '70s, with many epic songs. It's one of those bands that you need to pull up the lyrics, because they're usually deep. I recommend "Song for America", "Dust in the Wind", "The Wall", "Child of Innocence", "Point of Know Return", and "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)".
Idk i would put rush over them. First of all rush was great for farrrr longer, but in the 70s alone rush changed quite a bit while kansas kinda stayed the same.
@@trenken Note I didn't say "the best", but "one of the best". I recognize that "Yes", "Pink Floyd", and "Rush" (I love all 3) were in the same era and are all are great. I think "Kansas" is generally under-appreciated, though.
@@roccaclassico9028 kansas never really got that big even at their peak. Dust in the wind in their only super recognizable song by average people so the band was kind of forgotten about over time. They also werent that productive after the 80s so that didnt help.
@@trenken Not true. They were very popular at their peak (in the '70s). They had 5 platinum albums, three of those are multi-platinum. They were playing to sold-out stadiums, including Madison Square Garden. Yes, their popularity faded in the '80s because they had lineup changes. But, I was pointing out that they were one of the best Prog Rock bands in the '70s, and didn't claim that they had they same longevity as others. Your statement that they weren't that big at their peak proves my point how under-appreciated they are.
@@roccaclassico9028 i meant relative to rush who got much bigger than kansas bc of permanent waves and moving pictures. Rush also put out far more albums and sold far more. And its bc they kept the same lineup that was working. Kansas couldnt keep their key players and people lost interest.
I was born and raised in Texas and had never heard of the band Kansas until one summer night at a traveling carnival I won a game of target shooting. Some of the prizes were mirrors with the name of bands and their logos printed on them, Kansas being one of them. For some reason I was drawn to it and chose that one as my prize. That was late 70's or early 80's and I've been a fan ever since.
Did you listen to any rock stations during that time? I know Kansas weren't as big as some of the other mainstream bands, but they did get played a lot. This tune (along with Dust In The Wind and Point Of No Return) were pretty popular.
@@funkster007 I was around 9 at the time and didn't have my own radio and no control over what station was chosen, most of the time. It was mostly country, btw. When MTV was out about a couple of years, we got cable and a whole new world opened up to me.
Freshmen year of college. Every song brings me a memory. It’s why music is so important to me. When you are old, keeping your memory sharp is really key to growing old gracefully. Every time you react, you take me to a time and place. Left you a note in Messenger. Go to Def Leppard RU-vid page. They announced tour with Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett. They just added five new cities, one of which is Indianapolis. Thought you might want to check it out. Instead of watching concert crowds, you can be in the crowd. Now a lot of older peeps are gonna be there. But you will love it. I hope you get to go. ❤️
A religious song example their will be peace on earth when you are done...that's what jesus does when he returns if you listen to the song in this aspect you will see a whole new meaning to the song.
I was 14 when your mother was born....watching you two react to the music I grew up with is amazing and to think of all of the music you're missing. You should listen to "What's On My Mind" by Kansas. I think you'd really like it.
Great song. I love to watch the official video for this song. It gives a better appreciation of the musician's talents. The lead singer was playing multiple instruments as well as singing. It's Classic and Timeless!!
Saw them in concert with heart. They had 4 or five classical musicians come out in front of the curtain and start playing, I was right up front and was getting disappointed when the oboe Basson player stood up and went 1234 and slammed his instrument on the ground with a loud explosion coming out of it and the curtain dropped and they sang this song! Blew me away
This song be on supernatural the show ALOT. That’s probably where she recognized it from if she watched that show. Really good show. But dope song glad yall reacted to it
Must check out a live version of this super great song!! Please check out some REO Speedwagon, Allman Brothers (anything from there live at the Fillmore East album), Styx (Renegade, Blue Collar man), and definitely some Bob Seger!
This was one of my favorite songs when it came out in the 70's. Other great Kansas songs are "Song For America", "Journey From Mariabronn" , "The Wall", And "Dust In The Wind"
I was 11 years old when this song came out! This song played on the radio , on our way to many beach trips!!! Myself , my older brother, and older sister in the car would be banging our heads to this!! Good memories!! Miss that yellow and brown station wagon and the memories!! Dust in the wind was also good! Deep meaning on that song!! This song was used on Supernatural a television show as well!
This song was actually the theme song from a 1976 movie called Heroes and in the movie Henry Winkler was a Vietnam veteran that returned and was looking throughout the movie for his friend that he served with.
One of my faves by them was the combo of "The Spider", into "Portrait" off of the "Point of Know Return" album. Anyone who hasn't heard it is missing out on one of their classics.
Loving having the day off from work for Presidents Day . I got to jump in and watch early , like I did thru the holidays being off . Can’t wait for summer to be able to jump on every morning and have my coffee with y’all . KEEP ROCKIN
No autotune, kids. Their are vid's floating around showing them doing this great acapella intro live, no autotune. Listen to that guy hit & hold those high notes at end of song. Great, real, singing. Of course Kerry Livgren on guitar was great & great writer too.
This was my son's first concert when he was 12 years old (he loves 70's music) it was an awesome show at a local casino........ check out the song"dust in the wind" slow and melodic song ❤️ you would dig it ✌️
love this song!this is THEE song of show supernatural.usually used to do the previously bit at the beginnging.they fight evil every week which is mentally, emotionally and physically tireing.so the song says carry on my wayward son they'll be peace when you are done.rest your weary head don't you cry no more.
I live in Topeka Kansas just a few miles away from the tiny house that the band Kansas lived in during their early days. Steve Walsh who was the lead singer slept in a closet! There are two original members that still tour to this day. Dust in the wind and Point of know return are two other great songs that you need to check out.
Steve Walsh on lead vocals, with Robbie Steinhardt backing him up on vocals (and violin on other songs, RIP Big Red), and yes, the awesome Kerry Livgren.
Was 13 sitting in my room on a Friday with a cassetteplayer/recorder to hope for some good new songs to record... that same day i catched first Heart - Barracuda.... then suddenly: Carry on my wayward son .............. dont you cry no more... do-do do-do-dah! *Ex-fukken-plosion* That was 45 years ago and still i keep this song as one of the best ever. Chrystal clear sound, varied, groovy, catchy, raw riffin
And..... They sounded just like this live.. I got to see the original Kansas ... The very last show they did, until the reunion thing. Incredible doesn't begin to describe it!
If you like music with transitions, you should definitely listen to the group "Yes", and their song "Roundabout" is a good first step into their world.
This is my jam 😂 It meant something to me when coming up. I was pretty sad and needed a lift. Even pass religious feelings. Its a song you can just feel powerful and new and reflective which I appreciate. Plus those guitars and drums and all that. Just beautiful
Kansas had so many great songs they had some radio hits, but much better songs that wasn't radio airplay. First 5 albums all great. Next 2 or 3 were pretty good.
Everyone jumping on the Wayward Son bandwagon. Why not listen to "Sparks of Tempest." Music is just as heavy but lyrics even heavier. The theme is about people aimlessly voting without question and much more. Love the way the vocals switch from singer to singer. LISTEN DAMNIT!!
👁 "Dust in the Wind" was written after the guitarist Kerry Livgren read a book of old Native American poems. He said they reminded him of the Bible verse "from dust you were made and to dust you shall return" (don't remember the exact verse). A "you can't take it with you" song. VERY beautiful!! Please do the official video.
Back in the early 70s we had a band show up in our small town in Ellinwood Kansas at the opera house bar on Main Street called White clover and we thought they were the greatest band we’ve ever heard little did we know that this band would become Kansas and here I am 50 years later i’m listening to Kansas on this video and enjoying their music just like I did in my home town of Elmwood
So my friend bought this Huge stereo system. It was freaking awesome. This was one of the 1st albums he played on it. Like I've said before sweet memories and a little sad. If you can keep your friends close. Glad to see you guys appreciating music 🎶 memories
Lonely Wind,Distant Vision but The Coming Dawn will speak volumes to you.THe WALL ? A masterpiece with so many others.Kerry was a genius lyrically on a quest for truth he found in 1980.His words reflect it.
I was born the same year as your mom and as your parent, I'd be proud that you're keeping an open mind and showing appreciation for music and culture beyond what you might have grown up with and experienced up until this stage in your life. Keep that growth mindset up and you will go far.
What you just got your first taste of progressive rock. You were saying earlier about how the song "transitions" so quickly, is exactly what progressive rock does. It progresses. That is the beauty of the genre. Kansas is my favorite band, and their singer, Steve Walsh, is one of the greatest of all time in rock and roll. There is a reason they are *the only* American prog band that come to mind. They made prog a thing in the Americas, and there has never been a band nearly as impactful and famous as them over here. Their lyrics are the best and most impactful out of any band I've ever heard, and you have Kerry Livgren to thank for that. They are just so deep and emotionally intellectual. I can't describe how happy I am that you guys reacted to Kansas. If you guys want to hear more of Steve's vocal prowess, I recommend songs like Journey From Mariabronn, Belexes, and Dust In The Wind and if you want to hear more of the band's sound, I recommend Song For America, The Wall, and Apercu. You HAVE to listen to Apercu. It's a masterpiece in musicianship. You don't wanna miss it. Don't let Carry On Wayward Son let you have a false idea of what this band sounds like though. They actually use the violin in 95% of their songs, which is what garnered them that unique sound that set them apart from the rest. it's a crime they aren't a part of the R&R HOF, but they are one of the best prog bands for a reason. They still tour and I'm seeing them on Saturday. Propelled by six country bumpkins from the middle-of-nowhere Kansas, they made themselves who they are.
