From the countless reactions of Kelly Clarkson, it's kinda dumbfounding how people don't realize how awesome she is. This woman, in my opinion, is inthe top 0.001% of all vocalists in the 21st century, AT LEAST. She can sing all genres with impeccability and finesse. The fact that people haven't known that just proves how underrated she is.

As a math teacher, your percentage was that she sucks. 😞 I consider her in the top 90 percent or higher because she has pretty much covered every genre there is. In my opinion, Kelly Clarkson isn't afraid to try any type of genre. She does an outstanding job with all of them.

She’s amazing she can literally sing anything, her range is huge, she was doing a mixture of Dollys version and Whitney’s version with a little Kelly flare, she adds extra inflections sometimes for emotional effect. She sang Whitney’s version on “that’s my jam” and nailed every single riff and run that Whitney does.

Confused by the energy comment. This was a tender rendition. She doesn’t really get nervous when singing. You need to listen to her more. This was in honor of the song writer and original singer of this beautiful song, Dolly Parton. Dolly’s version is much sweeter, and “less energetic” than Whitney’s. This seems to me to be Kelly’s version with Whitney’s and Dolly’s. She can sing the super high whistle notes, but doesn’t much (American Idol performance of “Natural Woman”). She is also a wonderful songwriter: “Stronger” (Best Pop Vocal album Grammy winner), “Piece by Piece”, “Breakaway” (Best Pop Vocal album winner - not sure if she wrote that or not), “Because if You”. Early songs “Miss Independent”, “Since U Been Gone” (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Grammy winner) . She has also written one or two Christmas songs that are sure to be classics and that came out to rave reviews: “Wrapped in Red” and “Underneath the Tree”. I won’t be surprised if “Christmas isn’t Cancelled, Just You” becomes a classic, too. Lots if other awards and nominations.

Dolly was the original singer but I'm almost 100% positive Willie Nelson wrote that little gem but Kelly can sing the phone book nervous no she was not nervous the "energy" was where it needed to be . You didn't mention Willie Nelson so I wondered if you knew I'm so glad he let dolly sing it and Whitney cause it would not be the huge song if Willie had sung it he is ok but those ladies are awesome

Like everyone has said, Kelly wasn’t intending to replicate Whitney Houston’s cover, and she also incorporates Miss Dolly Parton’s version since she was there that night. Plus Kelly always makes each cover her own with smart, stylistic choices that suit her voice.

Whatever weakness you may have heard in this performance is due to emotions of her current divorce issues. She is living this song! I would suggest that you check out her performance from Garth Brooks Kennedy Center Honors. She performs one of his best songs "The Dance". I believe Garth's expressions during and at the finish will say it all. Kelly is a beautiful, powerful, amazing singer.

There were no weaknesses to her performance, she was staying true to Dolly's version. I'm sure her divorce isn't influencing any emotions from her at this point, except maybe relief that it's final.

Listen to Dolly's version, and then come back and listen to Kelly's again. You will hear that she was trying to keep her version closer to the original rather than to Whitney's version... Kelly never disappoints!

Kelly Clarkson is an emotional singer, however she’s not nervous because she’s singing in front of a lot of people, cause she’s very used to it. She’s emotional because she’s doing a homage to Dolly Parton, she always gets emotional when she does this tributes to legends. When you get emotional is very hard to speak, imagine sing… And another thing, is that she had a history with Whitney. Rumour has it that Whitney called her to convice her to sing the “princess diaries 2” soundtrack, a movie in which Whitney was a producer.

That said ...this version is her balancing the Dolly version and Whitney's version with her own style! She's fantastic at paying homage without upstaging! You want to check out Her live version of Pieces...she performs it live on what was supposed to be the last episode of American Idol...ironic now since moving to ABC its now in its 5th season. After that pick a song . .any song.. she doesn't have one you won't like! She's also a fantastic coach on The Voice!!! She also has a weekday talkshow where she opens with a song request by an audience member...nothing like singing on the spot! Classic!!!

Kelly Clarkson is a classically trained singer who won the very first season of American Idol. The amount of soul and depth and richness she has in her voice is incredible. She can literally sing ANY style of music and do it well. On her talk show she does Kellyoke where you can see exactly that lol . Aretha Franklyn once predicted that Kelly would do great things with her voice and she was right. She is one of the best belters out there and she has an amazing range and tonality whether she is singing full on or in a more intimate setting. I encourage you to listen to some of her music. You will be glad you did. Kelly has had an amazing career since winning the first ever American Idol. She's a hoot during interviews as well. Totally off the wall funny. She sings a variety of styles. She can sing pop, country, and blues flawlessly. She's written some of her most famous songs as well. Too many great songs to list, but this will get you started: Stronger Because of You Since U Been Gone A Moment Like This Piece By Piece I Don't Think About You Heartbeat Song Dark Side Sober Walk Away If you want to listen to something really special, track down the CMT Crossroads Special that Kelly Clarkson did with Reba McEntire in 2007. They did duets of their songs together. You could really tell the two of them had a lot of fun performing together. It was a really special night. My favorite performances from that special were Does He Love You and Why Haven't I Heard from You. I highly suggest listening to Reba's version of Why Haven't I Heard from You first because it's totally and completely different from the way Kelly and Reba sing it during the CMT special. It completely blew me away. Kelly also sang Why Haven't I Heard from You solo during the CMT Giants: Honoring Reba McEntire. It was an outstanding performance.

Dude Kelly has been doing this at the big time level for 20 years. I mean she won American Idol in 2002 and has had like 34 Billboard top 30 hits, 17 of those being top 10 and 3 number 1's. I don't think those two parts you mentioned sounded "wonky" at all. Was not off key. They sounded simply like stylistic choices. She has hosted her own day time talk show for three seasons starting in 2019. I don't think there were any nerves at this point honestly. And to say she has a solid voice is quite the understatement, this girl has definitely been one of the very top female vocalist the last two decades. You need to check her out more and see for yourself.

She's not lacking energy. She's staying true to Dolly's version, which was bittersweet. She's doing it HER way. She doesn't need to copy anyone. You need to listen to more of her music so you understand her nuances and the emotion she brings to every song. Also, she never gets nervous singing.

Yes she loves to slowly build a song up to an explosive end. Qnd since she was doing q tribute to the original by Dolly she was doing a mix of Dolly's and Whitney's with her own spin. Check out her Nashville sessions, The Garth tribute and her Billboard Music awards medley from 2018 and 2019. She is amazing! And one of her favorite things to do is to purposefully showcase a break her in her voice to emphasize the ache or pain in her voice.

I've been subbed to the channel for a few months but this is the first time I think I've been actively offended by a reaction, hehe. Kelly is a queen, and as much as I thought Idol was trash basically from season 3 or 4 on... she's the real deal. She isn't nervous. She sang Garth to Garth at the Kennedy Center Honors. The only time I've seen her break on stage was the Piece by Piece on the finale of Idol, which you should absolutely do because of the raw emotion. But don't go judging those vocals... you'll understand why by the time it's over.

OMG the thumbnail on this RU-vid is definitely not the review you gave. Kelly Clarkson is a vocal beast. I doubt she was scared. She just got divorced and the meaning of the song had to be difficult for her. This was a little Dolly and a little Whitney.

I agree with the other comments. People think it's Whitney Houston song but Dolly Parton took it to number one before Whitney ever sang it. To be honest I prefer Dolly's version because it's like a caress and I feel it has more heart. Dolly's version is like a lover waking up before their partner getting dressed getting packed and waking them up with the back of their hands and singing this to them to say goodbye. Kelly did an amazing job she paid tribute to Dolly's version Whitney's fusion and yet found ways to make it her own other singers it might as well just be karaoke. I think what Kelly did was pure artistry not just karaoke.

After Kelly won American Idol she went on tour and I took my daughter who's now in her 30s to see her. I thought she was going to be a one hit wonder until I saw her perform. Wow she was amazing and was I wrong lol

Yes Kelly can sing!! This performance doesn't show Kelly's real voice. It really felt like she took Dolly's version and Whitney's version and mixed them, because both versions are incredible, and are the complete opposite of each other. That may be why it seems off to you. To hear Kelly, try Walk Away, Break Away, Since U Been Gone, Piece by Piece (live on American Idol, an outstanding performance), or her singing toe to toe with Reba live doing Does He Love You (a great performance by both ladies). Get to know Kelly. She is a great singer. She has many other great songs.

Oh sir, Kelly can sang sang. She is a vocal beast capable of singing damn near anything. I knew it when she was on and won Idol. Hopefully you will look into more of music and/or live performances. Kellyoke snippets from her talk show are pretty good too. 🙂

Thank you Zone15. It is incredibly difficult to sing a song that the world knows one way. Dolly sang this in 1974. #1 for her then again on the soundtrack of Best little horehouse in Texas. #1 again. Kelly is singing in the style of Dolly & Whitney with a big splash of Ms Clarkson who has been killing it vocally for 20 years. Last thing her own divorce that has been ugly just finalized. Add that to singing in front of Dolly and the world live. Brilliant

She honored both Whitney and Dolly while putting her own stamp on it. Kelly is one of the greatest vocalists in the world today. She’s also a beautiful soul. Have you reacted to her song Piece By Piece ? It’s about her Dad abandoning her and finding trust with her husband- who ended up swindling her and breaking her heart.

You should check out her "Because of You" Grammy performance and her live "Piece By Piece" from American Idol (as a performer, not a contestant) and then there is also her rendition of "Up To The Mountain" from Idol Gives Back Charity show. All three are beyond stellar and epitomize her as an artist.

Kelly Clarkston is an awesome singer, with unbelievable range. Listen to some of her other songs!! She doesn’t need to emulate Whitney!! She is in a class all her own!
