The song WAS WRITTEN as a farewell. Dolly was leaving the TV show she had told up front that she was only staying 5 yrs. Host was arguing with her and not :listening" to what she was saying so she decided to do what she did best. She wrote this song and took it to work the next day and sang this song to explain that she really was leaving.

There was a time when Porter Wagoner had money troubles, so Dolly bought his catalog, and then gave it back to him---so, of course, he not only got "instant money", it also enabled him to continue to make money, off his catalog!! Dolly's got a heart, as big as Texas; her philanthropy is renowned!!

Dolly Parton wrote this song and sang it as a farewell to Porter Waggoner who had given Dolly her big break, featuring her on his TV show that not only was filmed live In Nashville before an audience, but carried on TV stations throughout the Southern USA (in those days there were only four channels to choose from) and this song marked her break from the incredible time with his show to strike out on her own. Whitney Houston’s cover much later feature’s unbelievable and masterful vocals, but for me no performance of this song emotes on the personal, human level than Dolly’s original and subsequent performances. Often, many dwell on her accent, humor, or appearance - which are totally unrelated to her masterful songwriting and tremendous storytelling buoyed by exceptional vocal nuances. She shares this with Joni Mitchell, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, Linda Ronstadt & the other greats of her era.

I love Dolly, Shes a class act. On the red carpet when this song was popular during the body guard movie, Whitney sang it more up beat and made it more popular than Dolly did. The red carpet interviewers would ask Dolly how she felt about whitney making that song more popular than she ever did. Trying to get a cat fight going in hollyyweird. Dolly never took the bait. Dolly just said, Im happy for whitney Houston she made that song more well known than I ever did, Good for her . Because of her I made 11 million in royalties from her singing it. Years later when kentucky got hit with a string of tornados and destroyed lots of homes there. Dolly donated 11 million dollars for the people to rebuild. Very big heart among other things I wont mention. She wrote over 5,000 songs in her carerr. And shes still going. God Bless Dolly.

Those of us who are well seasoned, remember Dolly using this song as the outro to her variety show, so we got to hear her do this, or something similar every week. Whitney performed all sorts or acoustic gymnastics, but Dolly gave us the soul. And your appreciation of Dolly's talent is very much appreciated. If you haven't seen it, you owe yourself the Thanksgiving halftime show she did at AT & T stadium this year. 77 years young and still looks like a Cowboy cheerleader....

Elvis wanted this song. She wouldn't give it to him. It was an agonizing decision on her part. She was up all night crying about it. Colonel Tom insisted on having Elvis get half of all the publishing royalties to the songs he recorded by new artists. She has said she would have loved to have heard him sing it, but that it was her property and she needed to protect her work. She was asked, "How did you feel about Whitney going to Number One with the song?" She said, "When my version was a hit, I cried all the way to the bank. When Whitney hit Number One with it, I BOUGHT the bank!" What a wonderful sense of humor and what a wonderful person she is!

The film _The Bodyguard_ was originally planned to feature "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted," but rather than a rights issue, it was because the song was featured as performed by Paul Young in the movie _Fried Green Tomatoes_ while _The Bodyguard_ was filming that they decided not to use it. When they were looking for a song to replace it, Kevin Costner said he had an idea and brought in Linda Ronstadt's 1975 album _Prisoner in Disguise_ and played that version of "I Will Always Love You" for Whitney and the other people working on the film. You can find Linda Ronstadt's version easily enough on RU-vid if you're curious about the version Whitney first heard.

When I saw Dolly Parton live at Newcastle arena she described this as "The sing that is going to follow me for the rest of my life." and that probably has more to do with Whitney Houston than Dolly herself. I would suggest that eDolly is more well known for "Jolene" or "Islands in the Stream" the duet she sang with Kenny Rogers, another Country and Western artist I saw live when I was going through a period when I went to see any band or singer I hadn't seen perform live irrespective of muic genre!

Beth, she wrote the song, of course she sings it perfectly. Fun fact, Porter produced that song for her as a condition of her leaving.

Great reaction. Whitney was a talented young singer. But this is the version I find really touches my heart. I would love to hear a reaction to Reba and Dolly singing "Does He Love You:

She's also charitable, the Dolly Parton Foundation gives free books to teachers who request it for needy students. My favorite song she sings is Deportee by Woody Guthrie. Dolly Parton is loved by both Americans and Mexicans because of the beauty of her soul.

I prefer Parton's version over Houston's, the honesty and emotion is worth way more than bombastic voice and arrangement. same with "Your song" Elton John vs Moulin Rouge, "All by myself" Eric Carmen vs Celine Dion, and even "Je suis malade"...

Can you imagine the moment when she first sang this to Porter Wagoner alone in his office as a farewell message to him.

A more updated cover is by Ailee. A Korean American vocalist. Absolutely amazing. It was on a Korean song contest show. Channeled Whitney and added her own vocal range. All the instruments drop out for the second verse. Wow.

I saw the show when Dolly sang this for the first time. The Porter Waggoner show. 1970 something.

I haven't read all the comments, but its heartening to read so many folks agreeing with me. And not just because its nice to have people agree with you! LOL! It is, but I just adore Dolly and this song so much. Whitney was and always will be amazing, and she has songs that express gentle emotion....but this cover wasn't that, and I feel like it just isn't the same without Dolly's gentle treatment of the song...I just feel tons more emotion from her original version. I know part of that is because she actually was FEELING those emotions when she wrote and sang it. But more so I think it loses a lot with the belts. Nothing against belting songs or belting singers, I just think it wasn't as suited to this song as it is to many others. Love Dolly! I'd love to hear what you think Beth, of Dolly and Kelly Clarkson's slowed down version of 9 to 5??) Congratulations on your new music! Loving it! Happy New Year!
