Kelly's father left her and her sister when she was 6 and wanted nothing to do with her until she became rich and famous... Her step father stepped up.
She's said in interviews it's not about a stepfather but about how her (then) husband put her pieces back together and that he would always be a good father to their children....
@@ccormx lol the song obviously did not hint about a husband so she must have assumed a stepfather because if you think about it, it makes much more sense to deduce the song for a stepfather
Kelly writes about her life, that is why all of her songs feel so real. The damage her parents, especially her father, did to her as a child has been the fire that drives her and is reflected in her music. Her and her Momma are good now, I believe she still has nothing to do with her bio dad.
Kelly was also nine months pregnant here- so that was adding to her emotions about her dirtbag dad. Tragically, her husband was robbing her and she had to divorce him - shortly after this. Kelly deserves the best- she brings joy to so many.
Citizenesse Dad, yes. Ex husband, no. He’s still milking her & probably will for life. So gross. He and Kfed should start a band and make their own coin🙄🤢😂
Now you have to listen to the updated lyrics. Good god almighty…seeing her live singing before Idol and then again in Vegas …..this was absolutely INSANE…Kelly has so many songs that start faster tempo that she strips down to the bare bones. Her covers are L E G E N D..she even did Lose Yourself!!!
Kelly has powerhouse vocals!!! she was the winner of the 1st season of American Idol…they asked her to perform for the 20th anniversary…she happen to be 9 months pregnant for this performance…she is an incredible singer/songwriter
She is singing about her dad who left her. The man who picked her up piece by piece is her husband, now ex husband, but that's who she was talking about when she wrote the song.
This song is about her father who abandoned her and the family when she was like 4-5 years old. Comes back to her once she is successful wanting a relationship with her.
Besides all the other comments about it being a true story this was also the very first time she performed it and had a hard time getting through it. Also Keith Urban was crying because his father had just recently passed away.
She wrote this about being abandoned by her father as a child. And the man she is comparing him to is her husband (at the time). The album version is an up tempo song so to hear it like this was a wake up call to me as to how it’s amazingly written and Kelly sure can break ur heart while exposing hers. For something different yet amazing by her, check out a song called Walk Away from CD USA. Kelly thrives in live performances. She doesn’t get enough credit for her work but she is truly an amazing artist
I don't know one person that didn't feel her pain deep in their core watching her sing this. Even if you can't relate you felt it. I felt this song deeply for both myself and my son.
Kelly wrote this song about her father abandoning her when she was a little girl and how he didn't want anything to do with her until she became rich and famous!
Keith Urban is such a caring soul. Wonderful human being and, Unbelievable Musician and Songwriter. A very powerful video I highly recommend is his live concert footage of his song to his fans Keith Urban - Everybody (live 2006)
I think you misunderstood. She's not competing here. She's been invited back as the very first American Idol winner to sing during the farewell season. she did write this song, so yes, it has a lot of meaning for her. :)
@@sunnystormy4973 yea I know. It was supposed to be. I'm not sure what happened, if it got bought out or something, but it came back two years later with different judges and new ways of doing things.
She wrote it about her little girl while she was pregnant with her little girl and now she is pregnant with her little boy while she's performing it here. She actually says that at the end. She didn't write it while pregnant with her little boy :)
@@HangingwithMonica I know. Sorry, should have put that as part of the comment, but I thought that was obvious. the point I was making, though, is that she didn't write it while pregnant with her son. She sang it here while pregnant with him, but she wrote it while pregnant with her daughter two years before this. :)
@@adiarainfoster it's all good when I wrote the comment I didn't hear her say she wrote it while she was pregnant with her daughter I meant she sing it well pregnant with her son
He father abandoned his kids and only wanted back in her life when she became famous. You should check out her song, Because of you. It's also about her life.
Basically this song is about her being abandoned by her father at 6 years old and how her children's father restored her faith that some men do take care of their children. Once she got famous that same "father" that abandoned her all of a sudden tried to come back because now she has money and made something of herself without him. Kelly Clarkson won the 1st season of American Idol, became extremely successful, won tons of awards, and now has her own talk show. Men need to stop creating children and abandoning them.
This preformance was years after she was a contestant on idol. She was the first idol winner. This was done on the last season before they brought it back. She was a superstar already when she did this.
Yessss it’s about her dad, her husband and her daughter….her father abandoned her, so she wrote this to him saying her husband gave her faith in fathers again because her and him will never do her daughter that way
you are a young father and I hope no matter what your relationship is with her Mom - you always remember this song and what it does to a child to have an absent parent. It definitely had a negative effect on my life. The abandonment never leaves you.
Always feel this from her when I hear it. She’s so good at conveying emotion. That’s my favorite thing about any artist…when they can make something you’ve never experienced relatable, just in the passion behind their voice. You should check out Yebba My Mind, live at Sofar NY. She’ll make you wanna throw your shoes. 🖤🖤
To answer your question about how you can sing when you are hurting.... I just sang at my dad's funeral, my brother's when he died at 23, and all my grandparents... best way I can do it is to focus on the music itself rather than on the meaning of the words I'm singing so i dont get too upset but sometimes you also have to just take a breath and gather yourself back together. It's really hard but it's doable
This is a powerful song and straight from her heart. Written about how her biological father abandoned her as a child and only tried being in her life once she became a success. And as she said, being pregnant and hormonal didn't help. She was Idol's 1st winner and this was the finale of the show. So it had that goodbye sentiment added to it as well. I cry every single time I see this video.
I still come to tears watching this.....parents can seriously mentally damage their children....kudos to Kelly for being able to overcome her past.❤ Love the reaction.
This was about her dad and did the song for her daughter.. it is so emotional for her. This was the first time she sang it in public as well. I cried that night myself, and still do today.
Her true story. She is talking about her Dad abandoning her & then when she became famous, he wanted back in her life. And she is talking about her hubby who now loves her & is kind & will stay for their kids. Sadly, she has since divorced him. This was her first performance of this. She won the first season & was a guest on this night. She made Keith Urban cry.
This song is about her and her father. How he wanted nothing to do with her til she got famous. Singing about how her and her husband would never do their child like that.
The song is the story of her life. She wrote this song. Her father left when she was 6 years old. She was pregnant when she sang this song. She was affected because she was about to be a parent. She couldn't understand how her father could abandon her.
This is the song/performance that got me "hooked on Kelly"! It gets me every time 😢. There is another version that's not as powerful...but still great!
Its about what her father did to her at six yrs old..true song..and she talks about how her husband got her through and picked her up..she talks about her daughter..
She had a terrible relationship with her Father from what I understand. She wrote this after her second pregnancy about her Father. I think after her Father’s passing. Great reaction!!!
This song is about her father & don't think he came in her life until she won American Idol. Ryan Seacrest is right there. He has been there since 1st Season wich was Kelly Season. If u watched all her performances u would be blown away cuz she can kick out those just everyone else.
As noted below she wrote this song about childhood & healing. She didn’t trust men based on how her father abandoned her then wanted $ when she became famous. When she met her now ex-husband he was everything she dreamed a man should be & felt he put her back together showing love & commitment. He had a child from a previous marriage & was a devoted dad then they had a child & was the husband & mother she deserved but never had. Unfortunately he changed & by the time this performance happened they were getting a divorce and he was using the kids to try and get way more of her money than he was entitled to & % of future earnings. He went from the man who put her back together to the same kind of selfish nightmare father who hurt her so badly. The only happy ending is that he failed in his attempt to extort $$ and use the children and damage them. It’s so sad that the happiness she waited so long for became a nightmare with another father hurting his children and stealing from her.
This is would sum up the relationship between my 2 sons biological father and their step dad (my wonderful husband who ever though they gave him hell proved he wasn't running away). My husband earned the title of their dad no matter who the sperm donor may of been.
Thank you so much for this video. Subscribed immediately. Could you please react to part 1 of this song called Because of you? It's also about her dad leaving her at a very young age. And also a song called I dare you (multilingual version) recorded live during a zoom session in 6 different languages with 5 other artists. It's amazing 👌👌👌
