So much to say about this reaction... You've mentioned the "noises" and the clarity of the recording. Jimmy Page produced all of LZ's records. Before joining the Yardbirds (which became Led Zep) he was a highly sought-after session musician in London. He paid close attention to how the artists were recorded and he became of master of microphone placement, particularly with the drums which is one reason John Bonham has such a big sound. He took great pains to record in such a way that each of the musicians could be heard. As far as the electronic sounds go: John Paul Jones used pianos, electric organs, and an instrument called a mellotron, a keyboard instrument which used magnetic tape pre-recorded with orchestral sounds to produce some of the string effects. Based on your comments in this reaction, I think you are really going to enjoy their 5th album: Houses of the Holy. Remember this is a band with 4 musicians all of whom were the best in their fields. Keep up the good work.

You got into the part that Jimmy Page plays that beautiful haunting pedal steel guitar.. they play the instruments and they don't program stuff like they do now and btw LZ are incredibly diverse because you will find out they can rock with the best but they will also do blues, middle eastern influenced rock, English folk music, funk, they are impossible to pigeonhole...thus the GOATs in my personal opinion

You are going to love this journey.... Keep in mind: the lead singer, Robert Plant, and the drummer, John Bonham, are both 20 years old when this album was recorded. Zeppelin hit the airwaves like a force of nature, and dominated the rock world for the 1970's.

As someone else mentioned, bassist John Paul Jones is playing a Hammond organ throughout while playing the bass pedals with his feet for the bass notes. Guitarist Jimmy Page is playing acoustic guitar throughout as well as pedal steel guitar. The pedal steel makes that low to high, stretched out sounding tone on the second half of the song (where he sings "it's my turn to cry" you hear it, I believe). This is a breakup song done Led Zeppelin style; Jimmy wrote it after a relationship ended. As far as the sounds you hear goes, sometimes it's the instrument, for example the Hammond organ or pedal steel, and sometimes it's what was done in the production/mixing part, like, maybe backward echo was added or compression, etc. I'm very glad you're enjoying the journey so far.

Haven't listened to this song in many years as so many Zeppelin songs it's fantastic

The instruments used were drums by Bonham, guitar by Jimmy, vocals snd harmonica by Robert, John Paul Jones played bass, mandolin , keyboards including mellotron. Mellotron could sound like a piano, organ, flute etc

FYI , Robert Plant and John Bonham were 20 yrs old when they made this album in 1968

Your hitting on the premise that Jimmy Page wanted the band to sound like. Page spent hours in the studio layering different guitar tracks into songs.

This really speaks to their diversity of sound on their first album. This is a basically country/gospel style.

I love lo-fi chill, downtempo, ambient stuff too. Radiohead is at the top of my list. Pentangle for 60's folk rock. ♡

Try listening to the Madison Square Garden version of Whole lotta love. Jimmy uses a theramin stick. It's the instrument they used in a lot of 50s Sci fi so I'm sure you know the sound. And if you like electro music I would reccomend a British band called the Chemical Brothers. They were massive in the 90s.

they are using the original hammond organ, the keyboard that every synth was born from. on you music tastes, i think you would like the group "The Moody Blues" they are the orchestral rock guru's. still playing today with only 3 changes due to age/death and illness.

That sound you are hearing is Jimmy page using slide guitar technique on top of JPJ playing keyboards. Feel free to ask I can tell you just about anything you want to know. I can definitely hear a couple of layers over dubbed, but they are just as magnificent playing raw live

Some 70s 80s instrumental music you may not be aware of, called "New Age", my favorite that comes to mind is Andreas Vollenweider (his virtuoso harp playing, intertwined with other cool acoustic instruments, and interesting sounds). Some other prog bands from this era are Uriah Heep, Camel, Jethro Tull & Blodwyn Pig. All great, all different, all musically inventive, but LZ will always be my number 1 because of their diversity.
