One of the Funkiest bands to ever exist, Lowell George is one of my fave musicians of all time. The whole band is incredible but he always stood out! Worth the journey folks...
Yeah, I think Asia & BJ missed that... the song is the story of a gorgeous Southern Belle every man thinks is his, but she turns out to have quite a history and a full little black book.
I worked security for a little Feat show back in '78. They were great guys. I spent the most time with Sam Clayton, but I had no idea how special it was to have spent some time with Lowell, as he passed shortly thereafter. Little Feat "The Greatest Band Nobody Ever Heard Of"
Paul McCartney, The Doobie Brothers, Bonnie Rait and a million other rock artists idolized them. The are still on the circuit but it's just not Little Feat w/o Lowell George.
Asia & BJ their live album Waiting For Columbus is one of the best live albums ever recorded. Do Fat Man In The Bathtub & Oh Atlanta from that album next.
Any Doobie Brothers song that has those tickling piano notes in it(Sweet Maxine for example)is Billy Payne. He played on everyone of their albums including after Mike MacDonald joined. He's one of the most highly sought after session musicians around and is the only surviving original member.
"Willin’" ,"Spanish Moon","A Apolitical Blues" , "Fat Man in the Bathtub"-they were okay after Lowell George, spectacular with him, great live band, so tight, so talented. Thanks for this reaction ❤
The band got a sound-alike replacement after lead singer Lowell George passed, but I never felt the band was the same afterwards. RIP Lowell George. Thanks for reacting to this amazing band. BTW, Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris sang backup on this tune when they were young and b4 they were big stars in their own right.
One of the best bands of the seventies. The whole band were extremely talented musicians. Lowell George was another genius songwriter that left us too soon. He was also no slouch on slide. Many great songs. Check out Fat man in the bathtub. Another amazing tune. Check out all their
You've finally discovered Little Feat!! You will love their other stuff as well. "Waiting for Columbus" was a very popular album on college campus in 1976.
The style of music varies from one track to the next on most Little Feat albums. This variance demonstrates their creativity and stellar musicianship. Back in the day, many music critics felt that Little Feat's lack of commercial success was due to the fact that their music did not fit neatly into one or two categories. Their music is wonderful. Thank you for your reaction/review.
Lead Singer/slide guitarist Lowell George (R.I.P.) was a great player. Billy Payne one of the best pianists I've ever heard live. Their Waiting For Columbus live album is a CLASSIC!
Y’all done missed the whole meaning of this song about that southern lady in a little house at the edge of town. Oh my. And ALL the boys knew her well. Do the math.😎
Many folks think Little Feat are a Southern band, but their origins are really in Southern California. The only true Southerner in the group was Bassist Kenny Gradney, the rest were SoCal boys, and some SoCal girls on backing vocals. Little Feat are a vastly underrated group from the 70's through to today, they are still touring, but several members have passed since their real glory days. Founder and Lead Vocalist/Singer/Songwriter Lowell George, Guitarist/Vocalist Paul Barerre and Drummer Richie Hayward have left us, but Keyboardist/Vocalist Bill Payne, Conga Player/Vocalist Sam Clayton and Mr. Gradney are still going strong. Got to see them with Lowell back in the late 70's, and a bunch of times since without Mr. George, an always a GREAT show.. AMAZING.
One of the best bands of the seventies. Formed in Los Angeles by ex members of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Their live album, Waiting for Columbus, is top notch. The band was never the same after the death of Lowell George. The band reunited in the mid eighties, with the addition of Craig Fuller being the main songwriter and singer, but their sound was different.
Fat man in the bathtub is one of my lifelong favorite songs...I remember dancing in the living room to this album when I was barely out of toddler age...dixieland funk!
Little Feat was an L.A. band that just SOUNDED Southern. Great vocals, amazing slide guitar and a supernatural rhythm section. Throw in Bill Payne's piano, and you've the makings of a delicious musical stew.
Y'all would love their song Rock and Roll Doctor. Good call on the New Orleans reference. They definitely have some musical influences from that area. The Meters, Dr John, the Neville Brothers all have that flow.
Little Feat is such a fantastic band that's so totally overlooked. If you wanna hear their best stuff, you gotta look into their album Waiting For Columbus. Try checking out Fat Man in the Bathtub, Oh Atlanta and this song, Dixie Chicken, linked up with Tripe Face Boogie. Lowell George stepped in as America's foremost slide guitar player after we lost Duane Allman. The man and his metal sprocket slide could play stuff that would just slap ya upside the head.
Love me some Little Feat! Great reaction guys. They DO have that Southern sound... for a band from San Francisco. The live version of this does the band more justice.
No it doesn't. Their studio tracks were always superior plus Waiting for Columbus isn't completely "live" anyway. Lowell George went into a studio and re-recorded the vocals cause he sucked singing them live.
Lowell George had a great voice. This is actually a California band, but they do sound Southern. Now y’all need to listen to FAT MAN IN THE BATHTUB. There is a live version from a British tv show, I think it was called The Old Grey Whistle Test.
Little Feat’s Waiting For Columbus live lp has some awesome songs. Oh Atlanta, Fat Man in the Bathtub, Spanish Moon.. in fact the whole album is great.
Lowell George was a member of the Mothers of INvention, but got fired (stories vary about what truly happened, but FZ was notoriously anti-drugs). Zappa, however, thought Lowell George was talented & helped get him a recording contract with Warner Brothers. Little Feat was a reference from Mothers drummer Jimmy Carl Black about the size of Lowell's feet...lol. They are an amazing band and one the truly under the radar type of groups....just a gumbo of styles...they used to kill it live....**Lowell George produced the grateful dead's shakedown street album....
Now we’re talking! Magnificent band, should be and have been better known, although the folks who said they were never the same after Lowell left and subsequently passed are sadly right.
I have had this stuck in my head every time I drive lately. Find myself singing it by the time I hit the stop sign down the road. Bonnie Rait and Emmylou Harris usually would tour with Lowell back in the 70s.
First of all, let me say Little Feet are an amazing band. This song is about a beautiful southern belle that can charm the money out of any man's wallet. The proof is in the last line of this song when all the boys in the bar began to sing along. He wasn't the only guy who couldn't remember spending the money he put down. This particular beautiful southern belle knew exactly what she was doing, and it wasn't the first time she did it. I love this Little Feet song 11 out of 10.
Did anyone ever tell you these guys were from California? All but Billy Payne(piano)have passed away. May they all rest in peace. HoF worthy in every aspect. Also thank you for doing the studio version and not the live version that I'm sure the majority of commenters have mentioned. Most everyone only knows that live album and are clueless to their body of work or how good the studio versions are. Also Waiting On Columbus is not live. The vocals were all re-recorded in a studio because Lowell George didn't like the live versions.
The thing I love about you guys is how you can listen to a clever story-song like this classic and completely miss the point. This is a really funny song. Take another listen sometime. :-)
Love your reactions to all the music except the breaks in the middle because it does affect the continuity and the enjoyment for those watching you. there seem to be many people who react at the end of a performance without having themselves blocked by copywright! Little Feat were a fabulous band for the late Sixties and the Seventies bringing a great Southern Country funk to their music. Lowell George, their front man had an incredible Tang to his voice with some great tonal variety. Sadly he has passed
Or sounds just like the sort of thing you’d hear somewhere except nobody ever did it quite like that or nearly that well. There isn’t anything quite like it but you feel like you’ve heard it before
Unfortunately you missed the storyline in this one. The "Tennessee Lamb" was a Lady of the Night. When here Dixie Chicken went to the local bar, everyone was singing the same song she sang to him. Garth Brooks remade this song in the 90s. It's very similar, just a little spicier.
