This cover is one of the greatest melancholies ever recorded. The lyrics are haunting. No matter how many materialistic items we acquire in life they will never fill the void that we all have. It’s dark, bleak and soul crushing but we all have burning emptiness inside of us at times. Sorrow weighs far more than happiness in us. Think of the happiest time you’ve ever had, maybe 10 or more pop up immediately but the saddest time, you know exactly where you were, what caused this sorrow and what you were wearing. Pain teaches.

It’s that nihilistic feeling that nothing matters and no one cares. Possibly that feeling is even more overwhelming for extremely successful people who have more pressure and feel ungrateful. So they turn to drugs and even suicide. It is a mad world. Something is very wrong. All we can do is remember most of everyone else feels this way, too. And maybe just smile, start a conversation, give an unsolicited compliment. And for ourselves, drive an hour where there’s no light pollution and look at the stars. Pet your dog or cat. Go for a walk and pay attention to nature, if you have access to it, or just to people. It won’t cure it. But it can make it bearable for you and someone else.

It's originally from Tears for Fears in 1982. I love the original version, but I also love the Version of Gary Jules a s well. It's a song for eternity, in my opinion, both versions. I think I've never seen someone feeling this song almost in a spiritual way, I mean, everybody was like "oh this song is beautiful, what sad lyrics" or "I undertand the lyrics of the song" but this guy, just with his silence, expressed more than all of them. 🥺Consider yourself hugged. I’m sorry for the pain that it brought up for you. Watching/hearing this reminded me of when I was teaching. I had 1st graders and we were watching a movie. The little boy sitting next to me (we were all in the floor) looked up & asked if I was a mom. I said, I didn’t have any children yet. He said- I wish you were my mom. I told him that I hoped I’d have a boy as sweet as he was someday. Even at 22, I knew that I wouldn’t ever want my child to wish someone else was their mother. This boy was very quiet but noticed everything so I tried to notice him regularly. I’ll never forget his sweet face. I know all of your subscribers will make you feel better. ✨🧡

this version isn't creepy to be but sad because it's as if you're reading the words coming from a person who is clinically depressed. Which is why this song is so sad. The nihilism in the song, hopelessness, insecurity, not seeing the point of the daily rituals and grind of peop;e's daily lives. But it hits to the core because I don't think you have to be clinially depressed but have moments of depression which I think most people have had moments of. To wonder what's the point of this or that and just be in the dumps about life. Powerful song and version and I love how the music that comes in for the second verse really adds to the emotion of the song.

Some things hit too close to home. I don’t know if there is many things as crushing to a person than to feel like they are invisible. No validation, no empathy. If you are excluded, ridiculed, abused and ignored, do you even exist. That is what I felt like for many years. The road back is long and painful. I’m happy to say, I’m one of the lucky ones who lived long enough to turn things around. Your reaction is so powerful to me because anyone can see there is something that lies just beneath the surface. Leo, I understand your reaction completely. Wow, my experience in the school system in Columbus, Indiana from kindergarten through high school. The teachers looked right through me. I wasn’t from an elite family or neighborhood and that’s exactly how the teachers treated me and others like me. Yup... pretty much our first experience with this version of the song did the same to us, but we were in a Theatre watching 'Donny Darko'. Just stunned silence.

The 1st time i heard this song was in 2008, i was 13 and on my way home from our school trip to DC..it was dark and peaceful, and I was sharing a seat with one of the jocks who didn't necessarily avoid me;we just never spoke or interacted. (Mind you this was only a class of maybe 60 kids) we connected during the ride home, i was always very artistic and eccentric and i guess he saw that. He asked to show him my playlist, and then told me about this amazing song from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. He gave me his other earbud, and we just played it on repeat for the next few hrs, holding hands, leaning on one another....in the most platonic and meaningful way.It was almost magical to bond with a random person who i NEVER saw myself getting along with. If you see a chance to connect with someone...take it. You never know what it might mean to the other person.

Someone on a TV show once described the state of sadness as 'It's Happy for deep people' - and leaving aside any attempt at humour, what they're really getting at is melancholy. People brave a lot of things, but in the silent moments (and it's probably the reason many people avoid silent moments) this kind of thing may be living in their heads. Rent free...

Perhaps to go/be deep is to recognize the joke is on us. The swoon in a Laurence Sterne, Voltaire, or Chaucer-esque, or more contemporary Tom Robbins/John Irving et. al., satirical sense. They all take great delight in trolling melancholy. And for good reason.
