First Time Hearing Madonna - Mer Girl / Sky Fits Heaven (LIVE) 

The artistic talent that Madonna has overflows from that brain and heart of hers…she truly is an incredible “Artist” in any form. Madonna deserves so much more respect than she gets from her peers in every realm of creativity. Does she fail sometimes? Yes, but at least she’s always experimenting and trying to make us think. To me, her greatest gift is her lyrical writing…she’s a lyrical poet.

That actually IS Madonna in the video. Always thought it was reflective of what just played out onstage...a woman who has been in a fierce battle, is bloody and bruised, yet emerges triumphant. That smirk on her face is everything. "Mer Girl" is the closing track on the Ray of Light album (her masterwork, imo) The song is poignant and poetic and almost shocking in its raw minimalism.

Here she did what it takes a lot of effort, time, skill and talent to do !! Really, no one comes close to her artistry, no one. She really earned the title of the Greatest Performer of all Time!! I'm eager to see what she has prepared for her next world tour "Celebration". Long live the Queen!!

The Geisha Girl act began with a video interlude of "Paradise (Not For Me)", showing Madonna as a geisha. Also present were nearly naked dancers who hung upside down from the ceiling. As the video ended, the dancers stood in front of the stage and opened their mouths, which were lit from inside. The singer then emerged in a short black wig and a hand-painted black kimono with fifty-two-feet long red sleeves, to sing "Frozen". A short intro of "Open Your Heart" (1986) led to "Nobody's Perfect", where Madonna was portrayed to be sacrificed for her sins. This was followed by "Mer Girl", which turned into the fast-action, ninja/samurai martial arts battle performance of "Sky Fits Heaven". A video of a beaten, bruised Madonna played on the main screen during this final part. The singer then proceeded to grab a shotgun and pretended to shoot one of her dancers. A remix interlude of "What It Feels Like for a Girl" closed the section; dancers in anime and manga inspired costumes swung from wires as the backdrops featured interspersed footage from Satoshi Kon's 1997 film Perfect Blue and hentai anime Urotsukidōji.

You may do an extra "Ray of Light" reaction and listen to the entire album in one go. It's a masterpiece and way ahead of everything. At that point in 1998 I thought well, Madonna has done everything, biy was I wrong, she's just warming up for the last 16 years....

From what I understand first part during the tour was in the song Nobody’s Perfect which shows a woman (Madonna) in an abusive relationship. This section shows her rising up and ultimately killing her tormentor, presumably husband. The woman on the screen (Madonna) was the bruised and battered wife who smiles in the end after wiping the blood of her mouth because she has killed her abuser. The end bit that got cut off was her shooting that dancer in black. There is more symbolism there which I’m missing too. This song was followed by video interlude of What It Feels Like For Girl. It was anime played on screen. Really intense. Highly recommend watching it. What it Feels Like A Girl was done both as video interlude and performed too. You want to get the video interlude. Also highly highly recommend watching La Isla Bonita from Drowned World Tour. It’s done in a completely different style.

This is part of the 2nd act of the Drowned World Tour and the full arc consists of Paradise (Not for Me) / Frozen / Nobody's Perfect / Mer Girl / Sky Fits Heaven / Mer Girl" and properly ends during the start of the next interlude (What It Feels Like for a Girl).

Both are album tracks from the Ray of Light album. They weren't singles. That's probably why no one has recommended them outside this live performance. For the next live reaction I would LOVE to see you do "Music Inferno" from the Confessions Tour.

She has been a favorite since 1983. ( I guess I’m old) I enjoy that you find the same excitement that I did and have experiencing Madonna. I highly suggest “Isaac” from the Celebration Tour. And, I cannot wait to see her again in Brooklyn, NY in December !

Both songs are from her Grammy Award winning album Ray Of Light. Neither one was released as singles but they were both fan favorites. Madonna doesn't just perform songs that were hits but songs that she likes and the fans like. She is a true artist in every sense of the word. My favorite part in the video is the fight scene.

The part at the beginning and the end is Mer Girl and it's about a dream Madonna had about the death of her mother and visiting the grave

Madonna's shows often tell a loose narrative story, but you can also enjoy individual songs out of context. This one is part of a longer segment (which included "Frozen"). "Mer Girl" is about the death of her mother, but it's used in a different context here. I highly recommend reacting to these two songs on their own - they're from her Ray Of Light album. Both very different but amazing in their own ways. "Mer Girl" is beautiful and haunting and experimental. "Sky Fits Heaven" is just a killer dance/techno song.

Madonna shoots the figure and disappears into the ground. Next, there's an interlude segment featuring a remix of "What It Feels Like for a Girl." During this interlude, dancers are wearing costumes inspired by anime and manga and they swing from wires while scenes from Satoshi Kon's 1997 film Perfect Blue and the hentai anime Urotsukidōji appear in the background. I love this segment. This tour was the highest-grossing solo artist concert tour of 2001, which I didn't know and had to look up. 😆

Madonna constantly reinvents and recreates the art of stage performance. She is the master at it, like no one before her or perhaps after her - she is unique in every way. Mer Girl is like a beautiful poem - both the lyrics and the atmosphere she creates are out of this world. Sky Fits Heaven is more about real life, life's wisdoms, connections between people, coincidences in life, but also about the heart deciding in the end which path we should take. Both songs are full of beauty and we should all be grateful for this high quality of art that only artists like Madonna give us.

one of my favorite live shows just because of the harness work and choreography but I definitely recommend checking out the studio version of Mer Girl. One of my all time favorite songs of hers. IT's so haunting and beautiful. It's partially about her mothers death and finding herself. Her mother's death is a recurring theme in a lot of her music throughout her career and a big part of why she adopted 4 children. This tour was a complete departure from the pop Madonna most people knew and wasn't as well received but has always been my favorite and just shows what a legit artist she really is.

Actually :D The wig-thing. That actually started in London, where in one of her concerts the wig was not put on correctly and it started to come off during the "Sky Fits Heaven" -performance, and it pissed off Madonna (as the perfectionist she is!), and at the end of the performance she took the wig off on the stage. It was not planned, it just happened. And I guess, Madonna liked the drama of it and maybe the audiences reaction that she started to include this in the show during the American leg of the tour. The London incident I remember reading on the newspaper, but it was only after the DVD was released and I watched it at home I realized that the wig thing had become a part of the performance.

that male dancer with horns - in black costume is Eko Supriyanto. a Javanese dancer and traditional artist from my country Indonesia🇮🇩 he did those Javanese choreos there which suited the Japanese music playing. woohoo🎉 this DWT was so special, it shows how Madonna DID HIRE professionals with specific and unique talents. and Eko passed the audition. EKO said in an interview that one day they were practicing the choreos with Madonna and he said that she never wore perfume - or atleast not often - so he could smell M’s body odour ʜᴀʜᴀ 𝙃𝘼𝙃𝘼 😄 it is also said that wearing perfume can cause breast cancer, so I can understand that ʜᴀʜᴀ 𝙃𝘼𝙃𝘼 😄

I would love to see your reaction to another non-single performance of hers, like Mother & Father from the Re-Invention Tour, or Why’s It So Hard from The Girlie Show (by the way, the bass in this one is amazing!) Now, for context to this specific performance: the previous song is Nobody’s Perfect and this samurai/demon is mistreating her throughout the entire song. So after Mer Girl part 2 she shoots him in revenge. Then there’s a video interlude before starting the cowboy section. This whole show (drowned world) is inspired by the book named drowned worlds by JG Ballard and all four civilisations in the book are shown in this concert.

By the time of the tour, she suffered of the hunting of paparazzis (Lady Di came to die because of it), it was a hard time for women considering as objects to sell (much different from the empowered 'Kardashian' profiles of today, like or not,, where women have more control their own business). At that time the Music Industry ruled by men didn't like her as she managed her own music label and was starting to make worldwide tours highly profitable by her own, hasn't been done before. The lyrics talk about her inner pressure (her lack of a mother support) and the pressure from the system and the industry that gave her as death... she finally end up with her album "Ray Of Light" and open the doors to a new millennium not only for music but for pop culture. She took her revenge, this is why she took of her wig and made an stand.
