Mariah ruled airplay, charts and sales around the world, after media and GP told her she was "over". This song went to sell 10M copies WW, remained at #1 for 14 weeks, won 2 GRAMMYs and was Billboard's Song of the Decade (2000-2010). Mariah recorded the climax (where she went UP) in just one take and you guys, you have no idea of what she can do or what she did vocally + SHE WROTE AND PRODUCED THAT SONG. The song's album, "The Emancipation of Mimi" was the best selling album by solo artist in 2005 and the best selling album of the year in the United States.

Lex R I’m not a fan of hers but here’s the deal: just because the music press or the tabloids try to impose a “failure” narrative on an artist who every Christmas consistently rakes in the $$$ and tops the charts doesn’t mean that it’s ACTUALLY the case. That narrative that was pushed hard at the time was possibly related to her divorce from a CEO of Sony Entertainment and the systemic misogyny in entertainment news outlets than anything else. As for her hiring a team to do the album: she could afford to do so and that’s how the business was starting to be run. Beyonce did and does the same?

The song was released back in 2005. She has a seven octave voice. She can hit those high notes! If you really want to hear her hit the high notes, listen to Emotions. She will blow you away for sure! She could break glass! She just turned 50 this year and still looks good!

For anyone who's thinking what is the whistle octave, there are notes so high that when a soprano hits them it has been nicknamed "whistling." Singers rarely have the technique to do it outside of opera. A classic example of real "whistling" is in the soprano "Queen of the Night" aria in Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) by Mozart. Another gorgeous aria in the same opera is "Ach, Ich fuls" (Oh, I feel) which was my final voice exam one semester in music school for classical voice. It's gorgeous.

Check out Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love" - it was HUGE. There is no need to apologize for not knowing about certain artists- access is not a universal thing and people have different circumstances growing up. I'm 41 and still discovering new music and I'm so grateful for that. I consider myself lucky to have grown up in a musical family. The important thing is you are finding and enjoying them now, and we get to re-experience the brilliance with you both.

I'm guessing that you missed the melodic throwback she wrote into this song. When she mentions "Bobby Womack's on the radio," she follows it by singing a bit of his song. She then does the same thing again when she then mentions hearing Babyface. Oh and yes... that's right. She is the primary writer of this song.

They are only 21 or 22 so no, they didn't pick up on any of that. I have to remind myself quite often they are ~16 years behind me. Like they did MC Hammer and I was like wait, I had parachute pants! And Vanilla Ice....that was a song everyone could do the rap part. Kriss Kross. The music of the 90s was about the best decade. But I def love my 80s stuff too with Queen, Journey, Styxx, REO Speedwagon, Springsteen, KISS, AC/DC, Zepplin, Aerosmith, Run DMC, et al. I love the walk down memory lane and watching these guys enjoy truly talented artists and musicians.

I just finished having an emotional breakdown. My mother is sick (for 8 YEARS now) and she is refusing to go to the hospital. Also, I suffer from mental illness, and that influenced my breakdown, as well. But I went to my bedroom and watched you boys love on one of my very favourite artists/songs, and boys, I actually LAUGHED. Out loud. Just from sheer DELIGHT at your reaction. I feel better now. This song was actually named the “Song of the Decade” from the year 2000-2010. It was literally that successful! She was around the age of 35 in this video too. She is a legend and my favorite singer of all time. Love her so much. ❤
