Marillion are from my home town of Aylesbury. Fish used to live 3 streets away. H has done a great job as the band’s second singer.

Marillion are so great at portraying the triumphs and tragedies of the human race. It was a marevelous idea to play them back to back like this. Thank you!

Never get bored listening to these masterpieces, one for 37 years, the other for 35. Thank you for sharing your appreciation of Marillion, please don't make us wait too long for the next one from this amazing band. 💕

A good depiction of both singers. Fish is passionate and poignant in Sugar Mice. Steve Hogarth is haunting in Easter. Great way to end the day. Cheers!

You're spoiling us tonight, Bandon : two beautifully melodic Marillion numbers. No doubt the band has lots of proggier material but Sugar Mice is special. I shiver every time I hear this big, burly Scottish bard admit “...if you want my address, it's number one at the end of the bar, where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars”. Ouch! As for Easter, one of the best from the “Hogarth” era, what with Steve Rothery's gripping guitar solo and the change-up that comes in like the winds of change, like a song of hope. Wonderful! 💙

Two brilliant tracks form a great band, who are still writing and playing better than ever. Steve Rothery's beautiful tones are a real trademark of this band. Years ago back in the 80s my brother was mad into them, I of course was young and foolish and thought they were just 'Genesis Lite'. How wrong I was they have had great albums over the years and their last one An Hour Before It's Dark was an amazing composition after all these years. Was lucky enough to see them live many times, the highlight for me was the Albert Hall in 2017 when they played Easter Live with mini orchestra as well, it was stunning with the whole audience singing along, an amazing sonic performance with again Steve Rothery playing the melodic line at the end over the violins, cello, flute and french horn. Great appreciation again Brandon.

Lastly, thank you for the very insightful commentary on these songs. ... Songs like Sugar Mice and Easter, despite being separated by their different eras of lead vocalists, will always stick with me as a soft spot of glory years for Marillion. Marillion MADE the '80s for me. They were the biggest thing going among me and my pals. When Fish left the group it was a gut-punch for us.

Marillion have always been one of my fav bands since their beginning. Great guys btw as well - met them (and Fish) on several occasions. The band influenced a mirad of proggers like Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, or Spocks Beard, was one of the fav bands by members of Iron Maiden and their Brave album was where Radiohead got their genereal ideas (and their shift from Britpop to something more proggy) for OK Computer - Marillion thanked them by recording the album Radiation. Unfortunately outside the musician's world they were not very well known from the mid 80s til... they hit it big again with their recent albums FEAR and An Hour Before It's Dark.

You've found two old beauties. And still this band rocks on. Glad you enjoyed songs I've held close for 35 years.

Nice to have Marillion back in the fold. Both great songs, each unique having a different singer. I’ve got both of these albums, a lot of good songs! You mentioned listening to “Estonia”…..definitely a great song, but you’ll need to listen to the title track from the “This Strange Engine” album. It a 17+ minute masterpiece! I’ve got several Fish solo albums, yet another rabbit hole if you dare!

Genesis has been my favorite forever, and Marillion became my second favorite pretty quickly. Highly recommend continuing to check them out. My favorites two from each singer are Misplaced Childhood (concept) and Clutching at Straws (thematic concept) with Fish, Brave (concept) and Marbles (thematic concept) with Steve Hogarth.

As with Genesis, there's a cleavage between Fish and H eras regarding Marillion. I love both as I discoverded them from the very start and immediately accepted H's arrival and personality. I encourage you to dig deeper into their work.

Good songwriting. The goal was for the music to highlight the story being told by the lyrics, solos/riffs matching. Not all artists can properly do this. Marillion, of course, does.

Marillion were great, but just the stuff with Fish, my main inspiration for playing guitar was Steve Rothery as well.

There is really a lot to dig with Marillion, you just got a glimpse of both vocalists of Marillion. Sugar Mice is a nice song, but relatively nostalgic straight and simple of what the band were about, Fish voice is really good, and Steve Rothery's guitar solo very effective, but I suggest you try there old earlier songs that got more of progressive moods and also more keyboard solo delights by Mark Kelly (try "Fugazi" or "the Web" or "bitter suite"), the other song Easter were among my favorite with Steve Hogarth with that Irish mood, beautiful acoustic guitar and that Rothery's solo is particularly moving than ever, nice change in Rythm style in the middle, great choice (see also the songs "Splintering heart" and "the space" you might love it!) cheers Brandon!

Fish is a Scot and his melancholy is totally of this land. Sugar mice are small condensed pink or white sweets that children of his era would have eaten for Xmas. Sugar mice obviously dissolve in water and when he sings we are sugar mice in the rain he is a dissolving man. Very touching.

lyrically i like fish more but cannae deny this is absolutely gorgeous

All albums with Fish as a vocalist are mandatory listening.

Brandon, my friend, totally off-topic, but as an '80s guy have you ever seen Giorgio Moroder's adaptation of the old 1927 silent movie "Metropolis"? (He took the original film and put a rock soundtrack on it. Stunning!) The soundtrack features vocals by Freddie Mercury, Pat Benetar, Bonnie Tyler, Jon Anderson, and others. I think your mouth would hang open in amazement.

Interesting to hear these again after a long break from Marillion. I don't love Sugar Mice as much as I used to. It now sounds a bit too close to a 1980's power ballad for comfort, and I don't like the self-pity in the lyrics, even though it has some great lines and it's one of Fish's best vocals. Still worth the price of admission for the guitar solo. But Easter still has the power to move me, and musically it's much more interesting.

Nice songs, I've always enjoyed listening to Marillion but for some reason I never became a "serious fan" of them. All of the elements are there that I tend to go for but they didn't click for me in a major way for some reason. 🤷‍♂ I even saw them live once at a small club and they hung out at our table for a while after the show, Fish and the rest of the band were very nice! 😎👍 My first exposure to them was when a dear friend (R.I.P. Liz!) gifted me two albums by different prog bands I'd never heard of before and one was Marillion's Script for a Jester's Tear. (I'd recommend "Forgotten Sons" and "Grendel" off of that album). The other album was Fact And Fiction by Twelfth Night and after a full listen to each album I only wanted to listen to Fact And Fiction and did so over an over. On a technical level in all honesty I'd say that Marillion has superior musicianship, better production quality, and more immediately accessible writing, BUT something about the style, passion, and greater creativity IMHO of Twelfth Night really won me over and I regularly listen to the Fact And Fiction album to this day and almost never pull out anything by Marillion. Especially the song "We Are Sane" which is amazing to me, both with over the top creativity and fascinating, literally prophetic, lyrics that in 1982 spoke of the current situation we are in with smart phones and social media! Well worth reading the lyrics at least! Twelfth Night is often as prog rock as Marillion but they also incorporate some sounds/styles of New Wave.

Like with sequels to great movies, I don't bother. So Hogarth I gave a miss..(no disrespect to his talent).Sugar Mice is such a heart-breaking classic where Rotherey pours out the emotion on guitar, and Fish tells the story so well. Your daddy took a rain check😢💔Thank you again Brandon.

Brandon, "Misplaced Childhood" B-side is waiting 4 u from centuries ago my friend, dividing that album into several reactions is a crime (I forgive you for that BIG detail), BUT to split it for a long period of time is the death penalty.

I prefer FISH'S more poetic style, but Hogarth's more straight forward lyrics appeals to me, I love them both...but as I said I prefer FISH angst fueled lyrics.

One of the few fish songs I like and one of the first H songs I like. Fish went off to flounder in the pond of mediocrity and H propelled Marillion into the sublime they’re a shadow of their drab 80’s past thank god.
