This is at or near the pinnacle of the Marillion catalog. But it is not intended to be heard as a stand-alone song. It is the true finale of the 1993 concept album "Brave", which describes in a series of songs the horrible and painful life of a beautiful young woman who, as a child, was molested by her "respectable" father, who ran away from home to escape the habitual molestation, got caught and placed in an asylum when people chose to believe she was not sane to accuse her father of such behavior, who ran away from the asylum to live alone and underage in the big city, who fell into a crowd of heartless recreational drug users, who eventually found love, only to be rejected, and who then decided to end her life of unendurable pain by throwng herself off a high suspension bridge to her death in the murky waters below. That is "The Great Escape" this song tells us about, sung by the incredible Steve Hogarth in the first person. The "why did you hurt the very one that you should have protected" lyric, where Hogarth cups his hands like he's holding someone's precious heart, is a reference to her father. I'ts tough for a reactor to invest so much time, but maybe on your own you could give a listen to "Brave" in its entirety. When the band took the finished album to its record label, the execs were aghast that they were being asked to publish a record which seemed to suggest that suicide was a good way for a young person to end their emotional distress, so they made Marillion go back into the studio and add one more song, "Made Again", which gave us the girl still alive and successful at climbing out of her pit of acute depression. It is a wonderful favorite of fans who've been there themselves at one point in their lives, but "The Great Escape" will always be considered the final song in the young girl's tragic story. The vinyl album had a very clever artistic compromise built into it. If the needle veered one way near the end, you got "Made Again". If it veered the other way, you got about 15 minutes of water lapping on a shoreline.

@@BlessingReacts. Be forewarned that with the original singer, Marillion is a completely different band playing a different style of music. Some fans love it. Others, like myself, can take it or leave it, at best.
