One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "I Am, I Said", "Cherry, Cherry", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Shiloh", "Holly Holy", "Song Sung Blue", "Longfellow Serenade", "Desirée", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" etc. He wrote the song "I'm A Believer" which became a big hit for the Monkees in 1966. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable.

Neil was on tour in Northern Canada. He asked one of the local women responsible for looking after him at this venue what people did up here in the winter because it was so cold. She told him a story about the fact they had a lot of dances. The only problem was, was that there were twice as many men to women. The ones that didn't hook up found themselves at the liquor store buying a cheap wine, they called Rosie. Her story continued and Neil walked away knowing he was going to write a song about this. He said it was the one good thing that came out of the cold. Vowed to never return in the winter

The wine was the brand Crackling Rose'. The natives "renamed" the wine Cracklin' Rosie so it could pass for their "women" for the night.

LOL, we had 3 channels in 1970, ABC, NBC, and CBS. I was 9 y/o with 2 younger brothers. We were the 'remote'. Dad would say get up and change the channel! Sometimes he had to go outside and turn the antenna and we yelled out the window when to stop turning (no air conditioning then)! Some things are better now!

We had 4 channels in 1970! ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS through local affiliates. That was if your antenna (which was mounted on the roof) could get all 4. Most of the time we only got the 3 big network affiliate channels, PBS was spotty.

@@davidgross990 Yeah, we had the rabbit ears on top of the TV, not the antenna on the roof. I was the youngest child so I was often the one who had to get up and adjust the antenna when the reception was bad. Of course, I’d get it in just the right position where the picture was clear but as soon as I moved my hand away the static would come back and someone would suggest that I just stay there with my hand touching the antenna. 🤦‍♀

I was a pure Rock and Roll girl. I was 18 and my sister-in-law asked me to go to a Neil Diamond concert, I had heard of him, we had the best time, and he was one of the sexiest men I had ever seen in person, I was a fan from then on. My favorite song he does is called "I am I said." Great song.

Try Holly Holy next. Neil was one of the singers you sang along with on the radio! Love his music just as music as I did then. And, AB, we had 4 TV channels- ABC, NBC, CBS, and local PBS. Hated how the hearings on Vietnam and Watergate tied up every channel for weeks!

Oh my gosh! I hated hearing about Watergate! I was used to hearing about Vietnam at the beginning of the news broadcast because that had been the norm for as long as I could remember. Once during Desert Storm when the news came on they showed, in the top left or right corner of the screen, the number of US soldiers wounded and maybe killed, if there were any fatalities that day. For me it was like a flashback to when I was a kid and they always showed the numbers of soldiers killed in action (KIA), wounded (WIA), and missing (MIA). It seems to me that they gave the total for that day but maybe it was the running total for the whole time we were involved. The numbers didn’t mean anything to me then because I was a kid and didn’t realize just how young the soldiers were (average age was 19, I think) or how many people could be affected by just one death. Thankfully in Desert Storm the numbers were much smaller. In 1990-1991 some of my coworkers were younger and I realized they hadn’t grown up seeing images of war on the nightly news. We had Vietnam, protests, riots, assassinations, and before that ended we had Watergate. What an introduction to the world at large for my generation.

#Cracklin' Rosie is the name of a sparkling (bubbly, carbonated) wine. Neil wrote the song based on a Canadian Indian tribe and the 'man to woman ratio' within. The story goes that the men outnumbered the women. So, when the weekend would finally come around .. the men, who had dates or ol' ladies, went out and had a good time. The men , who had NO date, would go to the local store and BUY their date ... hense Neil's line ... 🎶Cracklin' Rose you're a store bought woman You make me sing like a guitar hummin'🎶 Anyway ... that is what the song is about ... lonely men getting shitfaced on cheap wine!! 😏
