Otis was dynamite performing live... his performance of this song at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is one of my favourite concert film experiences. Check it out!

Redding wrote this with Jerry Butler ("For Your Precious Love," "Only the Strong Survive") in a Buffalo hotel room. The song finds Otis in a predicament: his love affair is going cold, but he's been loving her for so long, he can't stop now. This was Redding's best selling single and biggest hit while he was alive. Redding died in a plane crash on December 10, 1967

I hope someday you two get to see the footage of his incredible performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, less than six months before his death. Backed by members of Booker T and the MGs, his was one of the most popular acts, and he was warmly received by an auditorium full of hippy rockers, much to his amazement.

When my wife left me years ago, I listened to this song on a loop. Kind of masochistic, but when it comes to love, we can't always control our emotions. My mom caught me listening to it and said that song was her and my fathers dating song. It's one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. The only thing more powerful is watching him perform it. That video is on you tube.

Otis is absolute soul, 100 percent. He didn't have the time to stretch as as far as Marvin Gaye did, and buttery Sam Cooke is still my personal favorite. But try to follow the suggestions to watch Redding's entire Monterey Pop performance, and for that half-hour you will feel like you are watching the greatest soul singer who ever lived.

I never knew who Otis Redding was until I heard he had died in a plane crash. The King of Soul. The release of Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay made me cry. Here was a man who was about to reach superstardom was gone. Six months after his appearance at Monterey Pop in 1967 where 3 unknowns stole the show (Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix) along with Otis playing with the MGs. Otis Redding wrote most of his songs with friend legendary Steve Cropper. His guitar on Otis' song were so beautiful. Whether it is The Dock of the Bay, Try A Little Tenderness, I've Been Loving You Too Long or These Arms of Mine his music was so moving.

I'm an old woman, so I was a young woman back in the day when all the soul singers were in their heyday. Every turn of the radio dial brought forth the best music ever. With all the wonderful artists to choose from, Otis was at the top of my list. Another artist was Sam Moore of the group Sam and Dave. One of his performances that no one has reacted to is at Atlantic Records 50th reunion when Sam paid tribute to Otis by singing I've Been Loving You Too Long. Sam entered the stage wearing a red suit, looking great. What followed is one of the most iconic Performances EVER! PLEASE, react to this one for me and all your followers that love the best music on the planet. I know what I'm talking about! Btw, I love your reactions. Keep on keeping on guys!

I'm from Macon, GA, so I've always known about Otis Redding's music. I was 7 years old when he died and I remember my whole family was devastated. My cousins attended his funeral at the Macon City Auditorium. Years later, I met Otis's wife, Zelma, and their daughter Karla (she owned an upscale shoe boutique), Otis III and Dexter. They are all wonderful people, very protective of Otis's legacy, and have just recently opened the Otis Redding Foundation which provides local underprivileged children with instruments and teaching. Though the Reddings could have gone anywhere in the world that they chose, they stayed in Macon.

You can see why I love the r&b/soul music of the late '60s and '70s, up until disco ruined everything. After wearing out the 6 disc Rhino box set "Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience" I dug back into the soul charts of the period and my 8 more discs on my own. From the best known artists to obscure 1-hit wonders, fantastic music and artistry.

My favorite singer. Sitting on the dock of the bay is so haunting because he died three days after recording it in a plane crash. I read an article on the crash and I clicked on the next page and it actually showed him dead in the airplane seat, still strapped in. Really disrespectful In my opinion. Even in death he was so impeccably dressed. He was known for always being dressed well. I love this song and another one of my favorites is ‘Tramp’. Whenever I hear tramp I can just imagine everyone in a club dancing in unison. ‘I’ve been loving you too long’ and ‘fa fa fa fa fa’ are some other great ones

You have to check out his performance of this song at the historic 1967 Monterrey Pop concert that included The Who, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Most of the groups were some variation of rock and Otis was the only soul artist on the bill. But he turned those rocking hippies into soul lovers that night when he does this song as he completely wins them over. Sadly, he would die in a plane crash only a few months later.
