"My Heart with You" is another 5 part harmony masterpiece. When they sign it in concert, they put down the mikes and circle around a lamp. It is magical. They are so in tune with each other, you will see that sometimes they even have their eyes closed. They don't need the visuals to stay together. They feel each other's heartbeat.
"Run To You" is a master class in singing 5 part harmony. It has Avi providing the bass notes. They have another one that is similar in that it is just them, no rhythm or percussion needed. Another master class in 5 part harmony. This time with Matt providing the bass notes.
If you check out the version of My Heart With You from their Hollywood Bowl concert, Mitch closes his eyes about halfway through the first verse and, as far as I can tell, doesn't open them again until the song is over. In the version from the Christmas Under the Stars TV show, I don't think there's a single clear shot of him with his eyes open for the entire song.
I think they have a hive-mind when they sing. No cues, no flub-ups, flawless. You watch other bands and singers, they all give nods and cues, but not Pentatonics.
I can't believe that after telling you there was another song that was a master class in 5 part harmony singing with Matt singing the bass notes, I forgot to say that that song is "My Heart With You". Duh. Sorry I'm so confusing.
The first time I heard this song, I was stunned. At the point in the bridge where they sing, "...break my shackles to set me free" - I was so overwhelmed, I began crying. You're right. Their voices fit together like a puzzle creating a cohesive, perfect whole.
Beautiful, solemn song performed by the best vocal group out there. You REALLY need to watch them singing Creep for the Masked Singer show. The best version is them doing it after they were eliminated and unmasked so you can watch how involved they are with the song and who is singing what parts. It's pretty incredible.
I wanted to suggest the same thing! This is one you will be floored by when you listen to it, and yes, the best one to see is the unmasked one. The official one is great as well, but it's audio only and you don't get to see their emotion as they sing. I know you usually have a lot of other things to get to before coming back to PTX, but I urge you to change up your schedule to bring this one on sooner. By the way, there are instruments in it that you don't see.
The Mitch slaps delivered to the judges was fabulous. The reaction to Mitch was awesome. His notes were angelic. I think that the judges were expecting Kirstie to be hitting them.
By leaving out the vocal percussion, Kevin and Avi are able to sing choral parts, which adds to the richness of the chords. This style of song is called "homophonic" because they are mostly all singing the same words at the same time, but different notes, which forms chords. PTX has several songs in that style, including your last reaction, "Can't Help Falling in Love". When they sing those songs in concert, they usually ask the audience for quiet, put down their individual mics, stand in a circle around a mic and just sing to each other.
That abrupt cut off at about the 6:00 mark at the top of that crescendo…now imagine that live in a dead quiet auditorium or coliseum packed with 12,000 people. Goosebumps and tears the first time I heard them do this one live. Same with ‘My Heart With You’.
The bridge in this song is the part that always affects me the most. So much emotion, the split melody, ending it with the dissonance that resolves a few seconds later...it's just so good. This song was inspired by My Heart With You, which is in my top 5 songs from Pentatonix - highly recommend it!
When Scott was in his first year of college, he joined the school's a capella singing group and they did a cover of "My Heart With You", a 2008 hit for US pop group The Rescues, who were known for their harmonies. A year or two later, Pentatonix had formed, quit school, won The SingOff, moved to Los Angeles and were trying to get back their record contract with RU-vid hits. Scott taught "My Heart With You" to the rest of the group and it became an important song for them -- 5-part tight harmonies, no vocal percussion, just something that brought them musically close together. They didn't record "My Heart With You" then, but when Scott and Avi wrote "Run to You" it was in the same style. Ten years later, for Pentatonix's 2021 Christmas album, they finally recorded "My Heart With You". And they are doing it on this year's world tour; here's a fan video from March 20, 2023, in Perth, Australia -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qLiAackT1zg.html
This song was inspired by My Heart with You, they said that song inspired a lot of their arrangements and originals, and they finally covered in the Evergreen album, you should definitely listen to that one. Also, about the Masked Singer, you could still react to their new single of Creep they did for the show that they recorded.
PTX ORIGINAL and FIRE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 My Heart With You is another masterpiece, not an original like Run To You but another vocal perfection. I saw them do it live 2 years ago in concert and you could hear a pin drop in a stadium that held 30,000 people. It was INCREDIBLE ❤️🔥🙌
I was the person fortunate enough to mix this record for Pentatonix (I've been involved with them since the Sing-Off days). Usually there is a lot of trickery involved when thickening up vocals, especially in contemporary a cappella, but this one was so pure. Literally five channels, and just their voices with a bit of reverb. Also, they sang this live in the studio with no click track. We did go through a lot of mixes just to get every chord to ring as it should, and I have to admit getting quite emotional a few times while I was mixing this! A very special track indeed.
This one is amazing... One of my favourites of theirs. They're EPIC. 'My Heart With You' and 'Light in the Hallway' are others that are great. You should watch Live recordings of these!
This is just absolutely breathtaking. They are just so in sync with each other and just become as one with the song as if they are all one person. It just a phenomenal performance! 🎶💖
"This is fucking stunning to listen to." Yes, yes sir. It's like they open their mouths and this beautiful sound comes out that wraps around your heart and just squeezes and holds it. Like, it hurts so bad but it feels so amazingly good!!
Finally! Loved your reaction, as always. Someone once asked "Do they do any sad songs?", and this is one of those that fits that description. To show the flakes going up during the chorus, they filmed it with them mouthing the words of the chorus backwards, and then played it backwards and sang over it. It's such an interesting effect. I agree - the stars aligned perfectly to bring this group together.
This song is soo beautiful!! If you want more like that, their songs Light in a Hallway (original) and My Heart With You (cover and what inspired this song) are amazing! Also whenever the snow is going up, they're actually mouthing the words backwards to make it look right.
I'm a regular watcher of The Masked Singer but I'm also an original Pentaholic (Sing Off days) so yeah as soon as Scott started to sing I *Knew* it was PTX
The five-part harmony is brilliantly perfect. Their synchronicity in the pauses, all stopping and starting at exactly the same time is amazing. They are even taking their breaths at the same time. This is SO good.
THIS IS THE SONG THAT I THOUGHT "WITHOUT LOVE" SOUNDED LIKE. I remember hearing "Without Love" from Vinland Saga for the first time, and thinking it sounded familiar, and I think the reason is because I've heard this song before! it's the melody! like, in the refrain bit, where the lyrics literally repeat "without love" three times... the melody is similar to the part of this song where the lyrics are "I'll run, I'll run, I'll run, run to you" which is fine by me... I love both! "Without Love" is so thematically important to Vinland Saga in so many ways... it's an actual unskippable ED because of how hugely it enhances what you just watched, every single time you hear it. tbh, the lyrics of "Run to You" aren't far off base either.
This was an incredible performance and song by this wonderful group! This proves how talented they are at putting harmonies together. When I saw California rolls I immediately knew it was PTX! You cannot mistake their voices. You could do their final performance after they were revealed! Their cover of Creep is awesome. I look forward to you reacting to Mad World and My Favorite Things.
When you need something chill but amazingly beautiful, you NEED to check out Kevin Olusola (PTX percussionist) and Sam Smith - Stay With Me. One of Kevin's solo works where his cello absolutely SINGS!!! Emotional and just a gorgeous work!
The highest parts are sung by Kirstie and Kevin. People don’t realize how high and pure Kevin’s falsetto is. Mitch is singing main melody in this song.
Another five part harmony that floors you is “Light In The Hallway” again in concert, the put down the personal mic’s and stand around just one mic. This is another original song you’ll love.
It was actually Avi & Kevin, although Avi wrote most of it, using his composition and arranging training (also working with Ben Bram to finalize the arrangement). In 2017, shortly before he left PTX, he was invited to conduct the song at an a cappella workshop. Here's how that went. I love watching how he draws the emotion out of the singers with his movements. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xYVPyw8Q9fI.html
I agree with everything you said, this is perfection. I’m particularly moved by Avi’s voice. His solo work is stunning as well and I hope you will continue reacting to it, eg “First place I go”.
there is a movie in their early years one of their first tours called pentatonix on my way home its a behind the scenes and you get to know their personalities watching it i would recomend a reaction to that
There is a compilation of California roll and all the songs they sang on the masked singer, I think you should react to it. Also they released creep as an audio only, which is amazing for the sound quality, but they also sing it unmasked on the show and the visuals are necessary to see. This song is beyond words!
I remember well the first time I heard this song. I hadn't eaten in probably 18 hours, was starving. So I pulled into a chicken place and somehow managed to order the roasted chicken instead of fried, and green beans instead of potatoes. I was sitting in my car feeling sorry instead of strong. Then this song started, and I cried as I listened, and I couldn't articulate why. Why was I crying? I think just because it was so beautiful. I cried every time I heard it for the first 10 times, and every time I was frustrated with myself, saying "WHY am I crying?" To this day, I don't know why, other than I was hearing perfection and my heart was reacting to it.
Yay, more PTX 😁 If you like to mix in some more "quiet/late-night-vibing" ones in-between their epic songs, I'd suggest: "Thank you", "Silent night (live)", and "When the party's over". Also, kinda shook you have yet to watch Mitch's cover of "Your power" - it's beautiful!! And finally, for when you need to laugh, watch Superfruit's "HIP HOP GOES BROADWAY 1 & 2" pls 😁
Always so happy when you give us another PTX reaction. Requesting you go all the way back to their origin story. "The Sing Off". mrduckbear11 has all the videos you will need (performances 1 thru 12 pluse the finale). They include all the elements you need for an enjoyable, successful journey back in time. SO looking forward to joining you on this roller coaster of a ride!
This song is, hands down, my favorite Pentatonix song. Great harmonies, and dissonance, plus powerful lyrics. What surprised me most was the lack of percussion - that Kevin sang so well with the others. Anyways, I suggest Mad World a future reaction video. It doesn't have the harmonies as Run To You, but it's an intense song where their performance really digs into the meaning of the lyrics, moreso than Tears for Fears did (IMO).
I'm so glad you finally got around to reviewing this masterpiece. It was reportedly written by "meat and potatoes" Kevin and Avi in the first few years after the Sing-Off, and it is the benchmark for studies in achieving perfect harmony.
Your intros, enthusiasm, infectious positivity and all-around good juju (as my grandmother used to say) always, always, ALWAYS make my day. I just came out of one of the most frustrating parts of my day with a headache I could sell to science, and you've made me smile in an instant. I love your reactions, and especially when you react to Pentatonix videos. Thanks for brightening my evening and making it so I don't have to go to bed with a scowl on my face. You're the best!
I agree with you. I was stunned into silence the first time I heard this. It simply took my breath away. It is in my top 5 of their songs. It’s simply the best of the best from the best!
Thanks for the ❤️. And I agree with all the others who pushed for you to listen to “ My heart with you.” Another magnificent, intimate piece with gorgeous chord progressions that they NAIL as only they can. There are a few live version clips on RU-vid…I’d listen to one of those, because they’re live so you know they are really singing it, and it’s amazing to hear the audience (sometimes as many as a few thousand people) just stop making noise as a resulting hush descends while all those people listen, and PTX sing, facing each other. It becomes an ‘experience’ to hold your breathe for, not just a beautiful song.
Saw this title on the masterpiece that is PTX Volume 2 EP and thought Bryan Adams or Whitney Houston remake. Was far from disappointed. This was just beautiful and stunning. This song was inspired by the song My Heart With You which came out around this time. They also remade My Heart With You a couple of years ago. They made sheet music available for this and many high school acapella choirs sing this.
Love the new colour in your room - it looks totally transformed! Thanks for reacting to this - it's been so long since I last heard it, i'd forgotten just how darn great it is. So simple, but so effective. Still looking forward to you reacting to 'Valhalla Calling' from Voiceplay, by the way. I appreciate you must have a queue of reactions to do that's as long as the Great Wall of China, so this isn't a nag - just a friendly reminder so it doesn't get lost in the mists and you miss out on ever hearing it. 😊
I agree with 100% of your comments. "Fucking Stunning". You're right, this song was designed to showcase their harmonic skills. They were meant to be together.
Great reaction! I think Kevin and Avi wrote this one. As others have said, 'My heart with you is also a harmony masterpiece' and they sang it at the concert in London when I saw them on 4 May. Oh my god! Best live concert I've ever been to in nearly 40 years of live music!
This is my Favorite original of theirs. My favorite cover, with 5 part harmony, is Mad World, which I believe you've seen. PTX is the pinnacle of a Capella, imo
You really should take the Sing Off journey. It will stun you. Seriously, seeing how good they were after just meeting, and their progression, it's just nuts.
I think this is my favorite song of theirs. I've heard (though I haven't seen this confirmed) that to get the petals floating up in the chorus they actually learned to lip sync the chorus backwards!
This is the first song I ever heard from PTX a bunch of years ago, and it started me on my Pentatonix journey. But you may also be thinking of a recent original song called "My Heart With You"; an absolutely beautiful 5-part song that is mesmerizing, as well. btw" Love your reactions.
There is nothing they can't do. The masked singer just proved that they sound just as amazing with instruments, but this group definitely don't need the instruments. It would be cool if they did a album with instruments though. Their version of Creep after they got unmasked was amazing and everyone there got Mitch Slapped hard.....😂
I agree that this is some of their best harmony work,, with the possible exception of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.". Very different styles, of course, but stunning and complex blending of these wonderful voices in both cases. May I suggest that you rebalance the volumes of the video and your mike? While the video is at a reasonable volume, the level makes your voice into an earbuster, especially when you get excited (which is one the main reasons to enjoy your reaction). If you would lower your sound level, or raise the video's, it would help make the experience more comfortable. Thank you
Hokulea Crew is in Alaska. Voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa and her crew have set sail for Yakutat, this marks the beginning of the first leg of the Alaska Heritage Sail, a pre-voyage through the Southeast region of Alaska before the Global Launch of the Moananuiākea Voyage circumnavigation of the Pacific on June 15, 2023. The Alaska Heritage Sail will pay homage to Alaska Natives and the places that played a part in the 30-year history between Hawaiʻi’s voyaging community and Alaska. For the past week, crew members have been busy spending their days preparing Hōkūleʻa for the Alaska Heritage Sail and the Moananuiākea Voyage. The work has involved measuring and checking sails, lashing of the canvas areas, washing and rinsing the decks, and loading supplies. The crew also met with the Coast Guard to share their safety procedures and protocols and to learn how the Coast Guard would be able to provide emergency support if needed. The Coast Guard also shared advice based on their knowledge and expertise of the local area and waterways. The crew also received a tour of Sealaska, an Alaska Native Corporation owned by more than 25,000 Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian shareholders who are focused on protecting the oceans, forests and people of Southeast Alaska. Public engagements with Hōkūleʻan and the crew will begin on June 10, when Hōkūleʻa returns to Juneau after the Alaska Heritage Sail and is welcomed with a tribal ceremony. The Global Launch of the Moananuiākea Voyage, a circumnavigation of the Pacific, will take place on June 15, 2023. Further details on the sail plan and public engagement schedule for the Moananuiākea Voyage will be announced soon. I think the masked singer would be cool to see you react too, we all know it's PTX obviously but it's new songs to see you react to fro them but also they are trying to sing without sounding like them (we knew it was them) but it's cool to see! ❤😊
