People have no idea what autotune even is. It's just an excuse people use when they don't like a singer. Autotune is just a digital pitch shifter, nothing more. Yes, they had autotune back then. They have been using pitch shifting and Harmonizers since the 1940's. Only difference today is it's digital and not analog and is able to be used real time, not just post production. Ever hear Alvin and the Chipmunks? That's a cranked up pitch shifter, Auto tune.
While autotune did not exist in 1981 when he wrote this, It did exist in 2011 (?) when he sang this version. That being said, this is not autotune. this is how he sounds. Pure Talent
@@catlady443 Better have pure talent using auto tune. You'll still sound like chit with or without it if you don't. Auto-tune doesn't make superstars. There's no audio engineer creating a Taylor Swift out of YOU. People are hilarious.
Phil Collins dominated the music charts during the 1980s and 90, both as a solo artist and with the band Genesis. He had hit after hit and sold more than 150 million reccords worldwide. Some of his best include: Against All Odds, Easy Lover, One More Night, Two Hearts, Another Day in Paradise, You'll be In My Heart, and Do They Know its Christmas. He was also a philanthropist and raised a ton of money for good causes. And yes, he was singing live on all his songs.
This is way before autotune...when artists actually had talent and their live performances were amazing. He was a drummer to start, then became lead singer for Genesis after Peter Gabriel left eventually having his own solo career. That is his voice for real.
One of the most iconic songs to ever exist in my opinion. Sadly he has a neurological disorder and can no longer perform. We truly did have the best decade of music.
wow, this was actually something i’ve never seen before. i knew he was amazing but damn, what a performance. great reaction too, nat. looks like it almost got you misty-eyed there at the end. me too. 🖤
You need to check out others because you can't even see the screen. His name is huge rate in the middle of it.The big point is to see it because it's amazing and it's blocked off or I hate it when somebody they cut it off right before him doing that or in the middle of it it sucks
Don't apologize for being late, new fans of Phil are always welcome to the party!! If you want more solo hits from him, I recommend "Another Day In Paradise", "Sussudio", "Against All Odds", "I Wish It Would Rain Down", "Both Sides Of The Story", for starters. Phil was also a member of the popular rock band Genesis, he joined as the drummer, then became their lead singer as well and they had several hits in tandem with his solo career. To check out his work with Genesis, I suggest "Mama", "No Son Of Mine", "Home By The Sea", "In Too Deep", "Hold On My Heart" for some of their radio hits. They also had some fan-favorite songs back in the 70s when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer: "Carpet Crawlers", "I Know What I Like", " The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", "Watcher Of The Skies", and "Counting Out TIme" should prepare you for their longer tracks! Great reaction!
Phil is so good live! You definitely should check out some of his live Genesis performances. One of my favorite of his solo ones is -I Don’t Care Anymore - live at Perkins Palace. It’s a song that resulted from his divorce just like this one and Angry Phil is the best!!
That's called pure talent...the drumkit was hidden and rose up just as he was getting to the top. You'll hear the audience react when the drums pop up because they know what's coming
Why do you think we were telling you that you had to see it. This is before auto tune. Just an amazing performance. I love your reactions. We had the best music in the 1980s. There is a large rabbit hole you are about to enjoy. Not to mention his hits as the lead singer of Genesis.
Original studio recording 1981, this live performance 23 years later. Voice is awesome, drums are awesome. Love my Phil. Thanks for the reaction. Cheers.
Baby he sounds like this for real. I seen him live anyone can tell you back in Phil's day when we came up. There was no autotune. That's Phil's voice. Been listening to Phil like a lot of others since the 70s. Babe these people had real singing ability and had pure talent!
I just love to see new people watch Phil perform this for the first time, you never expect the drum solo! He is a true philanthropist at every show he has buckets passed around to collect money, which is then used to help and support homeless citizens. You should check out 'Another Day in Paradise', fabulous song even better message. Peace and love brother!
Saw this live many years ago. As he was doing the buildup, his drum kit is rising up out of the stage, until he sits down and plays that drop that you see, very cool.
Absolutely no autotune, that's his real voice. This was in 2003, before there was atotune. Musical genius. One of the best drummer that's ever lived. This was his retirement tour.
Phil is an absolute legendary icon! Don’t need auto tune THIS IS THE REAL DEAL! Loved him for decades and he doesn’t have even one bad song in his whole catalog of tunes! This is the baddest divorce song in history! So heads up NEVER piss ol’ Phil off cuz he’ll drag your ass all over the world!😂 Seriously tho back in the 80’s when this song came out WE ALL PLAYED AIR DRUMS RIGHT ALONG WITH THIS SONG! U gotta admit this might be the most beautiful, mesmerizing, iconic live performance EVER! Change of subject - check out AC/DC Thunderstruck Live at River Plate! U won’t be disappointed! One more badass live performance!
Oh you didn’t know? Your ass betta call somebodyyyyy! That beat drop with the drums when he sits down is iconic with a capital i. Some people were made to make music. He is one of those people! This song is an absolute banger. One of his many many bangers.
Phil is a damn legend. I remember when I was 5 years old having Phil Colins tape (I just found it at home randomly, probably my moms or grandmoms) and a walkman, walking around listening to it. I didn't understand a single word of english at that time, (not my first language) but I freaking loved it. Played it until the tape broke 😂 You should check out "Susudio" by him next 🤘
A Legend and Master at work! Phil is a world class drummer with an outstanding voice. A true musical ICON. I am the only 1 who gets massive chills at the drum drop? Phil and this song are IMMORTAL one of the greatest performance ever given.
Yes, this was the best live performance you've ever heard. It's the best live performance anyone has ever heard! Your reaction was great -- it's always fun watching a Tarzan virgin as they get hit by his drum drop. BTW, no autotune, though a couple of times a vocoder was applied in real time to sort of double-up his voice.
As Phil Collins once said, I'm a drummer that can sing a Little." He is a Legend now and forever. Also, people in the audience when he sits on the drums: " I've been waiting for this moment all my Life." Everyone knew what was coming such a Legendary performance.
Thanks for the really nice reaction. If you wanna go on check out Phil Collins voice... there are many great performances. For me one of the greatest songs he sang is a bit creepy and with some weird art-elements and was published together with the band he was part even before he started his additional solo career. Band name: Genesis. Song: Mama Check out the life performance 1990 in Knebworth. Anyway - thanks a lot and wish you all the best for your channel and your whole life.
Phil Collins with the song "In The Air Tonight" makes various perceptions for singers and drummers become Mind Blowing. The question for the 2 band positions, both Singer and Drummer, is "How is it possible that Phil can sing while hitting the drums with precision and the right intonation? Phil Collins makes everything possible. Even the two positions he plays at the same time should make us very breathless. I I have to say he really deserves a very big round of applause from the singers and drummers because he is probably the only famous musician who can do both tasks in this song
Back in 1989, I was with a group of friends at the old Beverly Center Hard Rock Cafe in Los Angeles when this song came on. When the drum riff kicked off the entire restaurant shook as people joined in by pounding the table or stomping the floor in time. It was such a cool group experience we gave ourselves a round of applause. I really miss that old Hard Rock. It was a perfect restaurant.
Phil is definitely one of a kind. His talent is in a world of its own. I’m so grateful to have grown up listening to his music. He went from a drummer of Genesis to its lead singer before he went solo. He also did the entire soundtrack for the Disney movie Tarzan as well as songs on other soundtracks.
Phil is a drummer who happens to sing. 😅 He's one of the greats, no question. Check out his songs "Another Day In Paradise" and "Easy Lover". For some epic god-tier live performances, check out Kasey Chambers - Lose Yourself (Eminem Cover) and Matt Corby - Trick of the Light (Live on The Resolution Tour)
I saw Phil Collins concert in the 80s. It’s funny to hear you say the voice doesn’t seem to match him. I’ve never really thought about it, because I’m very familiar with his voice, so it seems appropriate to me it sounds exactly as it should 🤷🏻♀️😂
His Mum was a Theatrical Agent and was in "Oliver Twist" at a young age on Stage, I saw his original Group: Genesis play their first ever Top Of The Bill show in August 1972 in Croydon, South East London:, with 3,000 others.
No auto tune sweetie, wasn't a such thing. Please go down rabbit hole with Phil!! He has so many banger songs. He was solo artist as well as in a group called Genesis!! Very talented man!!! I've listened to him since I was a young kid and I'm 50 years old still rockin to Phil.
Check out this whole concert! One of the best live shows I've ever seen! Phil is a master and commands the stage like no one else and he's got some great great songs! Ballads, dance songs, everything! You'll get a real idea of who he is as an artist. In the Air Tonight is of course "the song" but he has so many others...
He never wants to be a singer but when the lead singer quit the band that he was In they needed to find a new lead singer and he thought that he would try out and everyone like his voice so he became the lead singer of the band GENISIS.
No auto tune and he sounds even better live than how he sounds recorded on an album or cd. He and Don Henley from the EAGLES are the 2 best lead singer/drummer's that have ever lived!!! Check out the EAGLES "Hotel California" or "life in the fast lane" or any of the many incredible songs that they have recorde. Their concerts are always sold out months in advance.
If you enjoyed this, you really MUST watch Phil Collins, live at Knebworth 1990, singing Mama. It is just awesome. It has to be this live version as you get maximum effect of the bass, lead guitar, drums, keyboards and, of course, Phil Collins amazing vocals. Also; take a look at the audience; it's huge.
Just watch this full concert in Paris. You'll get to hear many of his hits, (you might recognise a few), after he left Genesis. You will not regret a second of the time you spend listening/watching this concert performance!
Phil Collins started as the drummer for Genesis. I'd check out MAMA from them. A must experience is the song " I Wish it Would Rain Down", not the official video, too distracting from vocal performance. Just the album cover with his face and titled "But Seriously". You will be blown away!
The song is about the time he came home and caught his wife with her affair partner. Hence the lyric to him, "If you were drowning I would not lend a hand." And to her, "I saw what you did, I know where you been". Of course they divorced. You should also watch him sing with Philip Bailey the singer for Earth wind and Fire, "Easy Lover" official video. It is also greatness.
He was in his 50’s here! It was early 2000’s so maybe there was some autotune- but he sounded exactly like this BEFORE autotune. Hes one of the megastars of pop and rock as musician, composer and vocalist. Third biggest record seller of all time after the Beatles and MJ.
