A most amazing musician! This song is so recognizable and I love it. Back in the day my favorite TV show was Miami Vice and this song was playing during the opening credits and throughout the pilot episode. It was said to change television forever. Thanks for a great reaction.

Not in the opening credits...that was a longer version of the standard Miami Vice theme. In The Air Tonight was playing during the climactic scene as Crockett and Tubbs were driving thru Miami late at night hunting down the drug lord they were after.

He is one of the all-time most talented musicians ever. His timing in every aspect is impeccable. He gets to the drums at the precise right moment. He hits every beat, with hands and feet, while his voice remains steady. Today's musicians are more concerned with their social media popularity. Collins's focus was only the art, and it shows.

This demonstrates the difference between a true musician and a mere performer. And yes the best way to enjoy this song is to get into your car at 1AM on a warm night (when there's no one else on the road), roll down the window, crank up the volume, and ride.
@PurpleIrishSweater

Yes!! Except it’s a dirt road, on a summer night, with a storm coming in so that the road is randomly lit up by the lightening flashing through the sky - and the rain doesn’t start until the song ends. Then the song feels like it has its own light show, and the night sky is applauding with the rest of us.💜

Phil was the drummer for one of my favorite bands at the end of the 60s into the mid-70s. Peter Gabriel, their lead singer, left to pursue a solo career. We all thought that was the end of the band. Then Phil jumped up and showed he could sing, even while drumming. Genesis found even more success! Then Phil continued with Genesis while also pursuing solo and other projects. Phil Collins was the sound of the 1980s! He did numerous movie soundtracks and was the backbone of the sound of Miami Vice. You basically couldn't watch a Disney movie without hearing Phil's voice. His age and neurological disease have basically ended his career.

As a former studio drummer, I really appreciate when a group as professional as this can perform this well live. The man with the long beard on bass is Leland Sklar, the best Bassist of all time. He's certainly the top studio bassist having played with hundreds of the top groups and solo artist on albums. Great performance!!

Phil Collins is one of the greatest. I'm happy to see the younger generation enjoying and appreciating his talent. A little background on him: he got famous as the lead singer of the group Genesis; he's got many hits with them and afterwards he went solo and straight up blew up. He's in a league of his own.

Phil was one of the biggest singers of the 80's and into the 90's. His group Genesis had major hits and his solo career was huge too. Phil is one of the legends, one of the great ones. I was in 7th grade when his first big hit ( with Genesis)"That's All" came out. I loved the song "Misunderstanding" Honestly every Phil ( Genesis) song is great! "I Wish it Would Rain", excellent song!

That weird ‘snapped’ drum sound you hear was accidentally invented during the recording of this album. It’s called gated reverb, and it went to become huge in 80s music. But this is the iconic version of the sound, and you are now obligated to break out the air drums whenever you hear this song, lol, it’s like a law or something.

What a joy to watch and listen to you react to one of the best ever pieces of musicianship ever. I held my breath waiting for you to get zapped by Collins’ drumming. When the song first came out I made a tape of my top 20 faves to play in my car. It starts with this song. Over the years I’ve listened to it over a thousand times. In fact, I even insisted on a cassette player in my car so that I could play this tape. Sidebar: A boyfriend was one of Genesis’ roadies… So now you know that I’m old enough to be your grandmother. Lots of us grandmothers came up during some amazing musical eras.

And to think the subject of the song isn't as dark as the song itself is. The song is, however, very visceral, which is why most people react so strongly to it...in a good way. You feel every note of music and rhythm in your bones! And if you don't do Air Drums during that epic skin pounding solo, then you're not human. One of the greatest performances, period!
