FIRST TIME HEARING Pink Floyd- "Sheep" (Reaction) 

You hit the nail on the head: The first part of the song is sheep going into a slaughterhouse. One thing that has struck me deep about Pink Floyd is the use of siren sounds. I cannot personally verify this but I have heard that the "stone, stone, stone" effect in this song is in the exact same spot as it is on the flip side of the record in "Dogs." The stone kept falling THROUGH the record to the other side.

I enjoyed your reaction to Sheep. It is such a great experience with many memorable moments. My take on the ending is that after revolting against the dogs, some of the sheep become dog-like and start to boss the herd. So, it produces a cyclical situation where the new that replaces old, repeats the same mistakes/behaviour. Just my personal thoughts. Just my two pence as we say over here, lol!

Music is time machine - I exactly remember my first listen to the Sheep and my chin just fell down. Oh god how I was amazed by breaks, tricks and sound of this masterpiece! 😉

Sheep and dogs were originally written as raving and drooling & you gotta be crazy. They were played in original form as early as 1974. The vocals were changed when pigs was written. There's several concert audio here on RU-vid where you can here them in their original incantations. Pigs on the wing was split for space reasons. On the 8-track tape version, they are played together with a Snowy White solo not heard on the LP. Search youtube for the 8-track version.

Hi Brandon, and thanks for the reaction! This was the first Pink Floyd song I ever heard. When I was at school, there was a radio programme that played new music every Friday afternoon. Since that time, when I started buying up the back catalogue, I have come to prefer earlier Pink Floyd songs, but this one still remains my favourite song from "Animals". I remember being drawn in by the vocals morphing into the synth sound, as you mentioned. That, and the vocoder type vocals on "The Lord is my Shepherd" bit. Altogether, quite an amazingly atmospheric track! 😎😎❤❤😊😊

Another great one Brandon! This is my favorite off of Animals, of course with Dogs and Pigs just behind. As a suggestion, another of my favorite bands from the 70s is Uriah Heep. They just released a new album just a few weeks ago. One of my favorite songs of theirs is “The Wizard”. It’s from their 1972 album “Demons and Wizards”. It’s a great classic album with must listens like “Circle of Hands” and “Rainbow Demon”. Their 1973 album “Uriah Heep Live” features the track “Gypsy” which features the synths and other keyboards, is over 13 minutes long and I’m certain one you’d love.

Wow man, I’m so glad you covered this ominous, epic song. I’m a huge Floyd fan and obviously it’s NOT easy choosing as absolute favorite from those guys. But I didn’t know about this song until I was college, 5 years after its initial release. Once I discovered it’s deep, dynamic magnitude, I was blown away and ultimately this would become my personal favorite. It still is today.

There's a song off "The Final Cut" album, Roger's last with Pink Floyd, called "The Gunner's Dream"... Sung by Roger it features the cleanest most emotional voice into musical instrument morph you will ever hear. BTW, the full song ain't that bad either!

Comfortably numb is the greatest rock anthum of all time with two amazing guitar solos, the outro solo is generally considered to be the greatest ever. It evolved over time doubling over as gilmour continued with waters to do two major world sradum tours and solo shows after rick wrights death.

To me, this is the golden age of Pink Floyd. Between the two albums of DSOTM and The Wall. Willing to make something totally different that really appeals to a more experienced Floyd fan. It's not as easily approachable as Dark Side or even WIsh you were here. But there's just so much there.

You have to listen to Pink Floyd live at Pompei live 2016. The show is awesome! There's a playlist in order on youtube. Guitar rip at the end of sorrow is amazing. And of course comfortably numb. Best version I''ve heard not in person ( I wish!) And the backup singers are crazy good.

Echoes is probably one of the grestest songs ever written. look foe the concert from the pompei version with both halves put together. They were split on the actual concert film like shine on you crazy diamond was split. Pompeii is the best version due to the ixing. strong base ang nick mason went crazy on the drums.

Gilmour's Floyd does not play this song live, but Roger and his band do. They played it during the DSOTM tour in 2006 and current tour "this is not a drill".

So much great music from these guys. This album may be my fav. Love the raw edge that Sheep has. Almost Punk. Almost industrial rock. Always Floyd. Definitely not 'Mary had a little lamb'!

Great reaction Brandon! I always loved the vocal into synth fade! Most people miss it. I agree dogs and sheep favs but pigs is so good too! I also agree I wish animals appeared in Pulse. Most people think it’s cos it was political and film our never plays any of it, but I think it’s because it was a really tough time for them and Rick got sacked by Roger after this album. But often the most inspirational music comes out of tense situations!

Always loved this song. Maybe one of their strongest tunes. It's my first exposure to the new mix released last year (I guess it is) and it was very interesting but I still prefer the original for now. I probably need several listenings.

My 2nd fave PF album , just a little bit behind DSOTM, and curiously neither of them include my favorite song from this super band... "Echoes"

Good catch...the sheep do, in fact, revolt...taking their frustrations out on the dogs. But , having no discernable effect on the pigs, they meekly fall back into their simple existence, doing what they are told - now directly by the pigs. The metaphors relating to human life are in the forefront here, much as they were in Orwell's novel.

If the genius of David Gilmour could be summed to a single chord, it would be the chord he strung just after 3:52 ... but of course, musical context is extremely relevant here.

Four hours ago I looked over your Pink Floyd vids and hoped I’d find sheep. Turns out I had to wait an hour and you did it. Awesome. But this remaster on Sheep is such a let down. The original has cohesion and less separation and important sounds are upfront where they should be. I guess you know where I stand on this subject. Oh well. Love the channel. Subscribed whole heartedly.

Having gotten to know your musical preferences - most relevant to this, how you responded to Dogs and Pigs....I must say I'm pleasantly surprised this was to your liking. Just goes to show NO musical taste is without its exceptions and outliers. I described this album as getting increasingly aggressive as it goes and I hold to that in terms of subject matter, but through your ears I can hear how much more musically rich Sheep is than Pigs.You ask about Pigs on the Wing pts 1 and 2 - it won't get you a ton of traffic but the completionist in me is twitching his eye at the idea of you not doing it. lol Being just one song cut in half, there is the 8-track version out there that has a bridging guitar solo, that would be ideal for the reaction format if you decide to go for it.

I have a request which you can follow up alone or do as a reaction - it's your call. It is the song Pigs on the Wing as one song and not split into two parts. It was officially released by Pink Floyd in 1977 but only on 8-track cassette. It features a guest player who does a sublime electric guitar solo between the verses (Snowy White who toured with Pink Floyd and later joined Thin Lizzy). I may have already suggested sorry if so. Don't know if you have listened to Iron Butterfly. It's what I would call America's first psychedelic band. In A Godda DaVita was a huge hit. Everyone loved the drum solo. And unfortunately it is the only one anyone has ever acknowledged. But their album metamorphosis charted 16th on the top 200 for the year. That was due to the song Butterfly Bayou. It is much longer, and has much more going on. I suggest you watch the only video so you can see how they're making the sounds. The video was a live recording from a TV show that went commercial free as to let them play Under interrupted for a half hour. I consider the talk box work better than Peter Frampton's. But there's so much more it is Spacey and Ron bushy is in a trance throughout. When attending their concert in 69 at the ASU Activity Center. Ron Bushey on drums actually passed out. He's already been through a few extended length solos at the time. Plus it was hard to breathe because of the smoke in the air. And no it wasn't cigarette smoke. Lol Although they may have been on more than just weed. '69 was a pivotal year from Woodstock to the Moonwalk. Was the year I was also in the movies Billy Jack, and Bless the Beasts and the Children. That movie's theme song (same name) was a huge hit for the Beautiful and talented Karen Carpenter. If it seems like I've done a lot. I have, likely more than most. But I was taught early on life is what you make of it. But it doesn't just happen you must create your own opportunities. Speaking for myself nothing came free or was handed down. Along with my Aviation career Many times I worked two or three jobs besides maintaining and growing a ranch while diversifying. And always accumulating property. Better than gold!

Sheep is probably my more favorite on this album. The whole album is about George Orwell's Animal Farm which was written in response to the atrocities of Stalin at the time. Just as it was before and after as history keeps repeating. As soon after the book was written you had Hitler and then Mao. Sheep finally Rebel and remove the fascist. Only to replace them with another. When the music takes the dark turn during the bastardation of the Lord's Prayer. Which is what evil does twists truths with falsehoods.. It was required reading decades ago it's likely now banned. As this time around it's not localized but global. Curious how everyone has Amnesia as it is playing out exactly the same as all did previously. Only easier because of Technology envisioned in the book 1984. Not my intent to make anything political. Just background information and history. It quit raining. It's time for me to work ✌️
