Brian May said this is a perfect song musically. Difficult to imagine a guy in his early 20’s writing such a highly sophisticated song…… but that’s Freddie for you ✌🏼😂😊👑
“I dress to kill, but tastefully.” Freddie’s fabulous fur jacket sold at auction in September for $32,500. More notably, the snake bracelet brought a whopping $873,000.! Freddie wore it regularly throughout the 70’s, including in the “Bohemian Rhapsody” video,
The lyrics on this are brilliant. The instrumentals complement the voices and lyrics perfectly. The subject matter is excellent. Bought the single on first release in 1974 and still have it. Gabe should try the next single "Now I'm Here" which is much more straightforward.
Because this was on Top Of The Pops it is being mimed to the audio track, which Queen (Freddie in particular) hated to do. You could always tell because the guitars weren't plugged in.
I love this song and always have. It is so sophisticated and so very Freddie. It has a different vibe because it is about a high class call girl so the song has a rather female vibe to it. I think it is done so well, I can see her.
Interestingly for a rock band they also wrote and performed the music on Flash Gordon and Highlander in the 80's. There were several top singles on this one album .
Yep - watched this for the first time on Top of the Pops 1974 - I was 13! And from that day a Queen fan. I even got sent to the year heads office as I went to school with the finger nails on one hand painted black.
I so love this channel, and have learned to push the VOLume right down before i click on it. The song is in my all-time top 5 since it's release,- 'cos i'm v. old; (but not deaf _\*v*/_).
It's a song about a high class escort he was enchanted with, hence the Marie Antoinette's cake, caviar and baroness references. One of their best - definetely in their top 5. Do "Days Of Our Lives" next. My absolute no. 1!
Seems like everyone in the US bangs on about The Beetles: who, in my opinion, have to be the most overrated band in history, but no one seems to remember Queen. Queen has to be one of the best bands ever to come out of the UK. Name another male artist that can compete with Freddie Mercury's voice. Even MJ couldn't hit the deeper notes like Mercury did. Love the fact that you're taking a deeper dive
BTW Gabe, what's your equal to this era. I'm interested. I mean okay, this era would be Grand Master Flash or something lol But out of curiosity, what was your sound growing up. Mine was Tribe Called Quest, DeLaSoul, Queen Latifa etc etc If you guys wanted to, it would be nice to have a few eps of 'Nick's first time hearing...' and switch the genre to rap or early hip hop. And at Nick, perhaps you have heard rap & hiphop from that era anyway lol But just an idea!
