Glad you liked it. Fantastic song from an awesome group. Footage has a lot of the 1977 Munich concert, at that time the Keyboardist is David Stone and on bass was Bob Daisley, which was the next change in band members after Tony Carey and Jimmy Bain left Rainbow. However they have some older footage too with the original members for the Rising Album. The Munich concert has a bunch of great live videos, such as the songs "Mistreated", "Catch the Rainbow", 16th Century Greensleeves", and "Man on the Silver Mountain". Worth checking them out.

@@AceofBadeReacts I think its the lineup that is on this song that is regarded most highly, Dio. Blackmore, Bain, Powell and Carey. The other lineups was good as well but they went in a different direction after Dio left.

His vocals were not only legendary, his song writing skillset were leagues above anyone who came before or after him! BTW Richie typically plays his solos using that Arabic scale. NOTE: The 2nd part of this song is entitled "A Light in the Black", check it out (Richie's solo in that session is mind blowing & of course Ronnie shines as always)…Thanks for the decades of memories Ronnie, and for you both for show-casing and appreciating the music we grew up on. Before dio was in Rainbow he started in doo wop rockabilly in the 50s. It was called Ronnie Dio and the Redcaps. Then he formed a band called Elf. Most of Elf + guitarist Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple formed the band Rainbow. He then joined Black Sabbath for two albums. He left because of interference from Ozzy and Sharon Osborne. Then after Black Sabbath made a few more albums he joined agian for one more album. He then formed the band Dio. 10 years before Dio died Tony Iommi tried to reform Black Sabbath with with Dio. Because of legal interference from Ozzy and Sharon Osborne once again, they decided to name the band Heaven and Hell. Then after one album Dio went back to His band Dio.

Great job on such a classic! Unfortunately, you mentioned one of the saddest episodes in musical history - and that was "not the official video" as there wasn't one! Should of got Spielberg doing one! Saw them many times back in the early days and they were always truly memorable! Strongly suggest you finish off the mini rock-opera by playing the next track "Light in the Black" - many others don't - which concludes the slave's story! The drumming is amazing. Another one of Rainbow & Dio's epic tracks is "Catch the Rainbow" off of "On Stage" which is always overlooked too - other versions are covered, but not this one - although it's around 15:30 long! Good luck & keep 'em coming!

Dio and Blackmore co-wrote the songs, Ronnie as always wrote the lyrics and probably other things as well since he played the bass for years in earlier bands and could play guitar. He a few years later in his career for example wrote the songs Holy diver and Dont talk to strangers by himself before even putting the Dio band together.

Great stuff. Listen to “Rainbow Eyes” by Rainbow, “Kill the King”, and “Gates of Babylon” are other great Rainbow songs. Tony Carey is a great artist also. Tony had his solo stuff under Tony Carey, and his alter ego band The Planet P Project. Tony pretty much played all of the instruments and sang in BOTH bands. Anyway, “Rainbow Eyes” is a beautiful ballad type song that was written by Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio. You won’t hear a more beautiful song. A beautiful flute solo is in the song also. “Rainbow Eyes” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WO7TYTt0smY.htmlsi=iezklrZrdSMlQSN2

Thats from the 1977 concert live in Munich. Check out 'Mistreated' from that concert live, and 'Man on The Silver Mountain' (the 14:45 min long version!) if you want to get a good idea of what MASTERS of their craft these 5 were, each one a GOAT in their skill. And the writing of Dio/Blackmore? EPIC. Sucks that they didn't stay together longer. Check out the band 'Elf' too, the band Ronnie James Dio fronted before Rainbow, they opened for Deep Purple. Blackmore heard Ronnies voice and started a new band! He was the GREATEST vocalist to ever live, in any genre, he could and did do it all for decades. Chrck out him singing 'sitting on a dream' and 'love is all' LIVE. The man had a GIFT FROM GOD.

Much of the footage was from a promotional studio "live" version of "The Gates of Babylon" (where I believe only Dio's singing is live. A stupendous song btw. And also footage from Live in Munich 1977. Swinging the guitar... You should look at Deep Purple, "California Jam", where Ritchie sets fire to his amps, smashes his guitar and quite a bit more at the end during "Space Truckin'". Two outstanding live tracks, with true live video, are "Kill the King" and "Man on the Silver Mountain" from Live in Munich 1977. They had "Kill the King" as the concert opener for maybe 2 years before the studio version was released on the album "Long Live Rock'n'Roll" in 1978. Man on the Silver Mountain contains several bits and pieces from other songs and a lot of improvisation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vpgu9wKJVbc.html Many just love "Mistreated", a Deep Purple MKIII song that Dio does brilliantly in Munich and also on the live album "On Stage" from 1976.

I hear ancient Egypt invoked often as a source of inspiration in antiquity for the cruel forced labor character of the construction of the wizard 's tower- I'm strongly reminded however of the Biblical account (Genesis) of Nimrod and The ill fated construction of The Tower Of Babel - another misguided monument to pretensions of Godhood, arrogance and eself grandeur. If one were to consider Nimrod the historical equivalent of the song's Wizard the parallels just fall into place. "A Tower Of Stone to bring him straight to the sky". The lore fits like a glove.

OK, it's like 2024.. How have you never heard of DIO? He is like a staple of the hard rock and metal community. I am 53 years old, and have been listening to Dio for like over 30 years. I just don't get how people are like just now discovering him. And the horns are from what I believe was his grandmother where she said it was warding off the evil spirits that would envelope you. I could be wrong though. I do know that Gene Simmons and Dio had a disagreement over the origins of the "Horns" but I do think Dio was the originator of them.

I think it's a great thing when people are learning about music they hadn't heard before. That's what makes the music community great. We all listen to different things growing up and share those experiences with each other. Oh that's really cool to learn that's where the horns originate from
