First Time Hearing Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody 

Bobby Hatfiled was 25 whenhe sang this live. He had been suffering with a terrible cold for weeks but nailed it anyway. His parents were in the audience and wanted to make them proud. I think he accomplished that.

One man, one mic, one take, LIVE... 100% Talent. --- He was trying not to overpower the song, it's only at the end he let his amazing voice fly. I've seen professional singers react to this video and they're all blown away.

The lyrics are so beautiful. I think the younger generation does not realize - in 1965, the Vietnam War was in swing. "I'll be coming home. Wait for me." That gives the song so much more meaning.

Written for a Prison Movie back in (1955) titled "Unchained." It was Composed by Multi-Academy Award Winning Composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret. Ten years later in 1965. Counter Tenor 'Bobby Hatfield' of the 'Righteous Brothers' gave a performance that was one for the ages. This epic (Live) performance was done on the 'Andy Williams Show' way before auto-tune or electronic enhancement. This is considered in the music industry as one of the greatest live television performances by a Singer and Orchestra in music history. Brilliant!

He had a really bad cold, that's why he sounded kind of out of breath when they were talking with Andy in the beginning. Also, it was the first time his mom was seeing him perform live, so he was really nervous! He managed to perform the song beautifully! One for the ages. He didn't write it, and he wasn't the first to sing it...but he made it HIS song! RIP Bobby Hatfield.

Bobby Hatfield was probably one of the best talents we ever had. He was a musician, more than just a singer. His range was phenomenal and he was a countertenor. His breath control and the velvety tones, his soul, his heart everything goes into his singing, and when he opens his mouth what comes out is magnificent. He was as perfect a musician that I can imagine.

Thank you for not interrupting this beautiful song…Every woman loves slow dancing to this with that someone special. This became the anthem of our soldiers in Vietnam for their wives and girlfriends when …if… them made it home.

This was a Live performance in 1965 on The Andy Williams Show, and BEFORE auto tune and without other computer assisted gizmos. Just pure raw talent. Also, his mother was in the audience and this was her first time at a live performance. A strong, always controlled 3 octave range with spot on tone quality and makes it look easy hitting those high notes that sopranos struggle to hit! Made all of us ladies back in the weak kneed with melting hearts. Also, back in the day, the audiences were more reserved to show respect to the performer and in this case to get all the lyrics and full affect of hearing that voice. Bobby, RIP, owns this song.

Bill Medley, the one who wasn't in this song, sang the theme song of the movie, "Dirty Dancing" called "The Time of My Life" with Jennifer Warnes. Of course that was years after this performance.

It always amazes me when Reactors never heard of the songs, singers and groups of Oldies But Goodies, and other genres. I am so happy when I see the joy on their faces as they discover and appreciate all these ol' classics. I pretend I am listening to it for the first time with them to experience the same element of surprise, the musical creativity, the instrumentation accompanied with the poetic love lyrics. I am so glad there are reaction videos because that will ensure these old Classics will continue to live on forever.

A man with a superb voice and command of his voice. He pours his life and soul into this song and it’s a classic now as it was then.

It's very easy anyone to love and appreciate this song. But, what only those of us of that mid 1960's high school experience can grasp was that it came on the heels of the Vietnam War buildup and all of those uncertainties, coupled with the wonderful era of high school dances, and slow dancing with that special girl or guy that you may have been envisioning as someone with whom you wanted to spend a lifetime. No matter how often this song is played, the overwhelming feelings of that unique and transitional time of life come back like the swelling waves of the tide rolling in.

The Righteous Brothers are so good they are timeless. Bobby Hatfield died in Kalamazoo MI on tour with Bill, in his hotel room at age 63, in 2003. i was shocked, that was only 60 minutes from my house. Apparently Bobby's mpm was in the audience and he was singing it to her.

They started with a small L.A. area record label called Moonglow. After getting some fame and exposure a large label pick them up. They became more mainstream. But with Moonglow they'd been edgier and doing some of their own songs. Some reactors need to check out some of these songs. I Just Want to Make Love to You or Little Latin Lupe Lu about a girl Bill knew in high school.

During Bobby's singing this song, it was note that Bobby was nervous because his mother was in the audience during this show. Older gentleman standing between Bill and Bobby was Andy Williams. Andy Williams was well-known singer a crooner from the 40's to 50's era. His well-known signature song is Moon River.

I’m 78 and listened to the Righteous Brothers all of the time. When I heard Bob sing this after all of these years I cried for the long lost love I missed out on. He has the greatest voice of all time. Sings it better than Elvis. Another great video and song Is All in the name with Barry Gibb and Michael Jackson. Just wanted to be a mom to Michael and show him a mother’s love for her children. Miss him and his music.

Check out both 'brothers' (not really brothers) on You've Lost That Loving Feeling, and Soul and Inspiration. Loving Feeling was the most recorded son in the 20th century, but the Righteous Brothers had, by far, the best version. Unchained Melody is my favorite but the other 2 are fantastic also.

Bobby Hatfield's rendition of that song was classic. As others have said here, check them out singing together "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" and "Soul and Inspiration". Bill Medley's voice is deep deep and the two complement one another.

I am 81 and have heard several artists before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of their albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we know. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Arguably, one of the most romantic songs that came out of the post 50's rock n roll era. *edit* not to say Righteous Brothers were rock n roll....but you get what I mean. Just waiting on the Motown peeps to come at me now haha.

This TV performance was in 1965, but the song had been around since its first presentation in a prison movie, titled "Unchained," in 1955. So many artists have covered it, but none as well as Bobby Hatfield in this live version. Great selection, KnK!

If you are interested, he is a Contra-tenor so his high notes in his songs are not falsetto, it is his natural range of more than 3 octaves, maybe 4 octaves. Also, no autotune, which makes my voice sound good, and not the microphone, just a small hand held connected to a wire. The point is, what you heard from him, Bobby Hatfield, is unaltered. Not many can do that today.
