Alex Lifeson is the guitarist. My degree is in Music composition (not that my opinion matters any more than anyone else) but that guitar solo is taught in the great music schools as one of the best examples of musical phrases that ask and answer a question. It is truly Bach, Beethoven, Mozart level brilliance.
@pablozee6359

As a multi-instrumentalist, the main guitar solo on this song (A Lerxst in Wonderland) is an absolute masterclass is phrasing and dynamics. It was and is a great example of how to compose and construct a melodic passage or solo that has a definite beginning, middle, and end. It’s also a perfect example that tasteful playing combined with good phrasing can be just as memorable (or even more so) as the shredding stuff to show off speed and technical prowess. Such an incredible band of monster musicians.

Musicians often say that Rush's 'La villa strangiato' is the benchmark for technical drumming, courtesy of the 'Professor' Neil Peart. Drummer Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater) said that if u could play the entire track w/ proficiency, u could play anything... the track also showcased guitarist Alex Lifeson's skills🤘🤘 Rush in 1978 had trouble recording the track cos it was so complicated... they wanted to record it in 1 take, but had to do it in 3 sections. The 'Hemispheres' album in '78 was the 3rd concept piece record (1st was '2112' ... 2nd was 'Farewell to kings')
@gingeroo5765
@gingeroo5765 2 года назад
That guitarist’s name is Alex Lifeson and you described his seductive playing perfectly (not to mention how he can totally TEAR it up as well). But, that is why I had a MAAAAAAAJOR crush on him starting from the first time I heard him at age 15. I’m now 55 years old, have seen them 14 times and they always and forever will be my favorite band. I love all 3 musicians. I can recommend SO many of their songs there are truly too many to list. I think it’s safe to say pretty much ANYthing by them is phenomenal and enjoyable, HONESTLY. But, no matter WHICH song it is- if it has lyrics, EVERY core Rush fan will agree that following along with the lyrics is a MUST in order to really “get” (or try to get) the real message of their song/album. It usually requires repetitive listens to grasp. So, here are just a very few: - Natural Science (lyrics or live) *Read lyrics(to yourself) before live react -CygnusX1-Book 2 (just listen) - Subdivisions (lyrics) - Workin Them Angels (live featuring drum cam) -Closer To The Heart (lyrics) -Xanadu (lyrics) -Mystic Rhythms (just listen/lyrics later) -Middletown Dreams (just listen/lyrics later) **By the way, I used to know all the words and notes, pauses and nuances to every song they had because I was THAT MUCH of an obsessed fan of their music- and their catalog is BIG. Well, their music is SOOO intricate and layered that 40 years later, I can still listen to one of their songs for the zillionth-time and hear something NEW that I never heard before! I can’t tell you how many times a fellow (longtime)Rush fan and myself have stopped each other and asked : “Did you EVER hear that part before??!” 😳🧐 lol Almost makes you start to suspect they are messing with us by inserting little bits and notes here and there in updated produced cd’s every so often just to throw us off or something! 😏🤣😂

Was fortunate enough to see every live tour from Grace under pressure through the final tour (got to see two shows on the final tour). Studio albums are spactacular but there was nothing more exciting than to see them live. While his legacy lives on, we will forever miss Neil peart. This took them a very, very long time to write. Even though it is instrumental, the song tells a complete story, with plot and characters. It's based on some nightmares Alex Lifeson experienced. It has 12 segments,: I-- Buenos Nochas, Mein Froinds!, II-- To Sleep, Perchance To Dream, III-- Strangiato Theme, IV-- A Lerxst in Wonderland, V-- Monsters!, VI-- The Ghost of the Aragon, VII-- Danforth and Pape, VIII-- The Waltz of the Shreves, IX-- Never Turn Your Back on a Monster!, X-- Monsters! (Reprise), XI- Strangiato Theme (Reprise), XII-- A Farewell To Things. Fun Fact: Villa Strangiato is a real place in Italy. I believe it is the home of someone in royalty.

It's funny because Rush did a lot of what you would consider a concept album in the '70s but they never truly did a concept album until they're very final album clockwork angels but you really should listen to from start to finish it's amazing! They're final work was truly their biggest masterpiece! What you were talking about earlier are called movements within an orchestral piece.

This was Rush's last concept album of the 1970's. It's a 4 song album. Side one is Hemispheres. An 18 minute opus follow to A Farewell to Kings last track Cygnus X1. You should do Xanadu from Exit Stage Left. And it's pronounced with a z sound. So zana-doo. I'm a bass player and Hemispheres has always been a favorite to jam. It's 18 minutes of playing bliss. It has one of the best flows from start to finish. But you should really listen to Cygnus. X1 first

I'm 3 weeks late and I don't know if anyone else has written this but this just makes the song at the bit better. Rush recorded this song in one session. They didn't want the sound to be pieced together so the did it all in one take, all 10 minutes of it in one take. 3 guys on all these instruments in one take. This is why I love Rush and why I regret not ever hearing this song live.

It makes sense that you felt that it sounded like "scenes from a movie", because each part of the song is a "scene" from guitarist Alex Lifeson's weird dream that is the basis for the song. He was known to have bizarre, vivid dreams (possibly due to some funny herbs...) and if you know that it's a dream as you follow along with the section titles, you can almost imagine what he saw by just hearing the music. It's really cool.
@CygnusKC
@CygnusKC 2 года назад
PS: the part titled "A Lerxst in Wonderland" was obviously a spin on "Alice in Wonderland"... and Lerxst is one of Alex's nicknames, which came about due to the butchering of his actual name pronunciation by members of the foreign press during Rush's early touring days in Europe.

No man, I love reaction channels when people have never heard or seen stuff I grew up with and love. I was 18 in Germany and this Italian dude's songs were everywhere. Eros Ramazotti. He has a full concert from his hometown of Rome he filmed in 2004. Those Italian women cry when the guy sings. Remember how I felt first time I heard his stuff, it's getting harder and harder to find new types of music because we all pigeon hole what we're used to on demand. Ice T shook my foundation in the late 80s and his stuff went wild in the young white population, my dad already thought I was a lost cause when I was cranking Motley Crue "Shout at the Devil," but when I forgot my Ice T Copkiller cassette in his car after I borrowed it he lost his damn mind and asked if I needed counseling. We laughed about it later for years. Someone has to recommend some other kinds of music. Giant hole in my urban musical awareness. I have a great line on hispanic and Brazilian tunes, need some hip hop or rap that isn't from the 80s or 90s.

According to the album notes, "La Villa Strangiato" was written, based on Alex Leifson's (the guitarist) nightmares. But at the same time, you can hear his sense of humor in it. BTW, this song was recorded in 1977 or 1978. At this time, Neil Peart, the late drummer of Rush, was generally acknowledged as one of the greatest rock drummers. Years later, Neil felt that he could improve, so he sought out a teacher, and between tours began studying drums again, eventually changing his approach to how he played. And he kept up with studying. Neil was to drums as Larry Bird or Michael Jordan were to basketball.

Is Alex Lifeson a great guitarist? I happen to think so. I mean, he kinda has to be to share the stage with one of the greatest drummers (Neil Peart) and one of the greatest bass players (Geddy Lee) of all time. This song was written based on a dream that Alex had. Rush has the ability to transport your mind to different times and places, and tell entire stories, just through their instrumentation alone. Then you add Neil's lyrics and it IS like watching movies with your ears. I love watching your facial expressions when listening to Rush. I've heard their songs hundreds of times and know every intricacy, but watching you brings back that "virgin feeling" of discovering them for the first time. Thank you, Van. @@johncalvo1743 In a recently-posted classic Guitar World interview, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson looked back on some of the band's staple songs and how they came to be. While discussing the intricate " La Villa Strangiato " instrumental from 1978's "Hemispheres," Alex commented: "That was all recorded in one take.

@@larrydavis3270 No it wasn't. Watch the documentary. You probably misunderstood what Alex said. Maybe he was talking about his solo. Maybe something else. But not the whole song.

I think this song is based on a dream, or nightmare the guitar player had, Alex Lifeson. nickname among the band members is, "Lerxst"!

Songs like this are why I always use uppercase when I refer to RUSH. They've earned it.

A lot of their older stuff is really good too. Caress of Steel, fly by night, a farewell to kings, exit stage left, etc... All 3 of them were constantly at the pinnacle of the industry. With drummer neil peart, who was a prolific reader of classical literature wrote a majority of lyrics was one of the GOATs of the past 50 years. He ranks up there with Buddy Rich and any drummer you can name. Guitarist Alex leifson and vocalist/ guitarist/keyboardist Geddy Lee wrote some of the best music paired amazingly to Pearts lyrics.

FYI, this was recorded at Rockfield studio in Wales, the same place as Bohemian Rhapsody.

Some songs come out of the freedom of jamming until a cohesive melody arises. Some are cleverly and rationally put together by the composer. Some are heard by a mind, and then the musicians have to learn how to play what the mind imagined. The last category tends to be truly original and unlike whatever came before it. This song was imagined by Alex Lifeson is his dreams, and Rush had to learn how to reproduce what Alex had imagined. Geddy Lee, in an interview, said that the song was way beyond their musical talent at the time Alex approached his bandmates with his song idea, and they had to learn how to truly master each of their instruments and learn new techniques to actually play this song as intended, and they view it as a watershed moment in their career, the moment when they became truly proficient at what they did as musicians.

Great reaction!!! Rush indeed makes very very tight and accurate but at the same time creative music.. or as they are know to be the worlds smallest philharmonic orchestra! Regards from Israel…

Artists, musicians, those 3 are all. I studied music most of my life, middle school, high school and college and this song is just like songs you are taught in school. Alex Lifelong is the most underrated guitarist ever. Geddy Lee is one of if not the most talented bassist/keyboard/singer ever. Don't forget the human drum machine they call Neil.

One more thing.. no studio tricks... yes thats 3 vertuoso talents doin all that.. not one steppin on the other. Each complimenting the other.. adding to the piece in perfect harmony.. I was blessed to see them live three times back in the day.. once again no cover ups no over dubs etc.. they sound as good. The same live

Dude, you definitely get it. This number is a presentation of the sensations of a dream sequence based upon Alex Lifeson's childhood nightmares. And yes, they very intentionally orchestrated it as an operetta with multiple movements. It never lets you get comfortable, keeps the tension up wondering what's next.

Really great reaction of Rush. best one yet. Though he did not alalyze the music as a musicion would, he nailed the emotional narrative and story to the very end. Excellent rection video. I will watch more.
